¹⁵ But the evil spirit answered them, ^(A)“Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize, but who are you?”

¹⁷ She followed Paul and us, ^(A)crying out, “These men are ^(B)servants of ^(C)the Most High God, who proclaim to you ^(D)the way of salvation.” ¹⁸ And this she kept doing for many days. Paul, having become greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, ^(E)“I command you ^(F)in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And ^(G)it came out that very hour.

³³ And ^(A)in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, ³⁴ “Ha!^{[a] (B)}What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? ^(C)I know who you are—^(D)the Holy One of God.” ³⁵ But Jesus ^(E)rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm.

⁹ And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is ^(A)Legion, for we are many.” ¹⁰ And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country. ¹¹ Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, ¹² and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.” ¹³ So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea.

^34 (A)And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And ^(B)he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.

^24 (A)“What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? ^(B)I know who you are—^(C)the Holy One of God.”

²⁸ When he saw Jesus, he ^(A)cried out and fell down before him and said ^(B)with a loud voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, ^(C)Son of ^(D)the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me.” ²⁹ For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him. He was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon ^(E)into the desert.) ³⁰ Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, ^(F)“Legion,” for many demons had entered him. ³¹ And they begged him not to command them to depart into ^(G)the abyss. ³² Now a large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them permission.

²⁹ And behold, they ^(A)cried out, “What have you to do with us, ^(B)O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us ^(C)before the time?” ³⁰ Now a herd of many pigs was feeding at some distance from them. ³¹ And the demons begged him, saying, “If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of pigs.”

The Fall

3 Now ^(A)the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.

He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You^[a] shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” ² And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, ³ but God said, ^(B)‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” ^4 (C)But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. ⁵ For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
