The Uproar in Thessalonica

17 After Paul and Silas[a] had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. And Paul went in, as was his custom, and on three sabbath days argued with them from the scriptures, explaining and proving that it was necessary for the Messiah[b] to suffer and to rise from the dead, and saying, ‘This is the Messiah,[c] Jesus whom I am proclaiming to you.’ Some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a great many of the devout Greeks and not a few of the leading women. But the Jews became jealous, and with the help of some ruffians in the market-places they formed a mob and set the city in an uproar. While they were searching for Paul and Silas to bring them out to the assembly, they attacked Jason’s house. When they could not find them, they dragged Jason and some believers[d] before the city authorities,[e] shouting, ‘These people who have been turning the world upside down have come here also, and Jason has entertained them as guests. They are all acting contrary to the decrees of the emperor, saying that there is another king named Jesus.’ The people and the city officials were disturbed when they heard this, and after they had taken bail from Jason and the others, they let them go.

Paul and Silas in Beroea

10 That very night the believers[f] sent Paul and Silas off to Beroea; and when they arrived, they went to the Jewish synagogue. 11 These Jews were more receptive than those in Thessalonica, for they welcomed the message very eagerly and examined the scriptures every day to see whether these things were so. 12 Many of them therefore believed, including not a few Greek women and men of high standing. 13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica learned that the word of God had been proclaimed by Paul in Beroea as well, they came there too, to stir up and incite the crowds. 14 Then the believers[g] immediately sent Paul away to the coast, but Silas and Timothy remained behind. 15 Those who conducted Paul brought him as far as Athens; and after receiving instructions to have Silas and Timothy join him as soon as possible, they left him.

Paul in Athens

16 While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was deeply distressed to see that the city was full of idols. 17 So he argued in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and also in the market-place[h] every day with those who happened to be there. 18 Also some Epicurean and Stoic philosophers debated with him. Some said, ‘What does this babbler want to say?’ Others said, ‘He seems to be a proclaimer of foreign divinities.’ (This was because he was telling the good news about Jesus and the resurrection.) 19 So they took him and brought him to the Areopagus and asked him, ‘May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? 20 It sounds rather strange to us, so we would like to know what it means.’ 21 Now all the Athenians and the foreigners living there would spend their time in nothing but telling or hearing something new.

22 Then Paul stood in front of the Areopagus and said, ‘Athenians, I see how extremely religious you are in every way. 23 For as I went through the city and looked carefully at the objects of your worship, I found among them an altar with the inscription, “To an unknown god.” What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. 24 The God who made the world and everything in it, he who is Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by human hands, 25 nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mortals life and breath and all things. 26 From one ancestor[i] he made all nations to inhabit the whole earth, and he allotted the times of their existence and the boundaries of the places where they would live, 27 so that they would search for God[j] and perhaps grope for him and find him—though indeed he is not far from each one of us. 28 For “In him we live and move and have our being”; as even some of your own poets have said,

“For we too are his offspring.”

29 Since we are God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the deity is like gold, or silver, or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of mortals. 30 While God has overlooked the times of human ignorance, now he commands all people everywhere to repent, 31 because he has fixed a day on which he will have the world judged in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.’

32 When they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some scoffed; but others said, ‘We will hear you again about this.’ 33 At that point Paul left them. 34 But some of them joined him and became believers, including Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

थेस्सलनीका येथे पौल

शहराच्या अधिकाऱ्यांनी व इतर लोकांनी हे ऐकले. ते खूपच अस्वस्थ झाले. त्यांनी यासोनला व इतर विश्वासणाऱ्यांना दंड भरण्यास सांगितले. मग त्यांनी विश्वासणाऱ्यांना जाऊ दिले.

10 त्याच रात्री विश्वासणाऱ्यांनी पौल व सीला यांना बिरुया नावाच्या दुसऱ्या शहरी पाठविले. बिरुयामध्ये पौल व सीला यहूदी सभास्थानामध्ये गेले. 11 हे यहूदी लोक थेस्सलनीका येथील यहूदी लोकांपेक्षा बरे होते. पौल व सीला यांनी गोष्टी सांगितल्या. त्या गोष्टी त्यांनी आनंदाने ऐकल्या. बिरुया येथील हे यहूदी लोक पवित्र शास्त्राचा दररोज अभ्यास करीत. या गोष्टी खऱ्याच घडल्या आहेत की काय याविषयी जाणून घेण्यास ते उत्सुक होते. 12 यातील पुष्कळ यहूदी लोकांनी विश्वास ठेवला. पुष्कळशा ग्रीक पुरुषांनी व स्त्रियांनी (ज्यांना समाजात महत्व होते.) त्यांनीसुद्धा विश्वास ठेवला.

13 परंतु जेव्हा थेस्सलनीका येथील यहूदी लोकांना समजले की पौल बिरुया येथेही देवाचे वचन सांगत आहे, ते बिरुया येथे सुद्धा आले. थेस्सलनीका येथील यहूदी लोकांनी बिरुया येथील लोकांना हैराण केले व त्रास दिला. 14 म्हणून विश्वासणाऱ्यांनी पौलाला ताबडतोब सुमुद्राकडे नेले. पण सीला व तीमथ्य तेथेच राहिले. 15 विश्वासणारे जे पौलाबरोबर गेले होते त्यांनी त्याला अथेनै शहरात आणले. या बांधवांनी पौलचा संदेश जो सीला व तीमथ्यासाठी होता, तो घेऊन ते परत आले. संदेशात असे म्हटले होते. ʇतुम्हांला शक्य होईल तितक्या लवकर माइयाकडे या.

अथेनै येथे पौल

16 पौल अथेनै येथे सीला व तीमथ्य यांची वाट पाहत होता. पौलाचे मन अस्वस्थ झाले. कारण त्याने पाहिले की, ते शहर मूर्तीनी भरलेले आहे. 17 सभास्थानामध्ये पौल जे खऱ्या देवाची उपासना करीत अशा यहूदी व ग्रीक लोकांशी बोलला. शहराच्या व्यापार क्षेत्रातील काही लोकांशीही पौल बोलला. पौल दररोज लोकांशी बोलत असे. 18 काही एपिकूरपंथी व स्तोयिक पंथीय तत्वज्ञानी मंडळीने त्याच्याशी वाद घातला.

त्यांच्यातील काही म्हणाले, “या माणसाला तो काय बोलत आहे, ते त्याचे त्यालाच कळत नाही. तो काय सांगण्याचा प्रयत्न करीत आहे?” पौल त्यांना येशूच्या मरणातून पुन्हा उठण्याची सुवार्ता सांगत होता. ते म्हणाले, “असे वाटते की तो आपल्याला दुसऱ्या कोणत्या तरी देवाबद्दल सांगत आहे.”

19 त्यांनी पौलाला धरले व अरीयपगाच्या [b] सभेपुढे नेले ते म्हणाले, “तुम्ही आम्हांला जी नवी कल्पना शिकवीत आहात ती कृपा करुन स्पष्ट करुन सांगा. 20 तुम्ही ज्या गोष्टी सांगत आहात त्या आमच्यासाठी नवीन आहेत. यापूर्वी आम्ही हे कधीही ऐकले नाही. या शिकवणीचा अर्थ काय हे आम्हांला जाणून घ्यायचे आहे.” 21 (अथेनै येथे राहणारे तसेच त्यांच्यात राहणारे विदेशी लोक नेहमी नव्या कल्पनांविषयी बोलण्यात वेळ घालवित असत).

22 मग पौल अरीयपगाच्या सभेपुढे उभा राहिला, पौल म्हणाला, “अर्थनैच्या लोकांनो, मी पाहत आहे की, सर्व गोष्टींमध्ये तुम्ही फार धर्मिक आहात. 23 मी तुमच्या शहरातून जात होतो आणि ज्यांची तुम्ही उपासना करता ते मी पाहिले. मी एक वेदी पाहिली. त्यावर असे लिहिले होते: ‘अज्ञात देवाला’. तुम्ही अशा देवाची उपासना करता जो तुम्हांला माहीत नाही. याच देवाविषयी मी तुम्हांला सांगत आहे!

24 “ज्याने हे सर्व जग व त्यातील सर्व काही निर्माण केले तोच हा देव आहे. तो जमीन व आकाश यांचा प्रभु आहे. मनुष्यांनी बांधलेल्या मंदिरात तो राहत नाही! 25 हा देव जीवन देतो, श्वास देतो व सगळे काही देतो. त्याला जे पाहिजे ते सगळे त्याच्याकडे आहे. 26 देवाने एका माणसाला (आदाम) निर्माण करुन सुरुवात केली. त्याच्यापासून त्याने वेगवेगळे लोक निर्माण केले. देवाने त्यांना सगळीकडे राहण्यास मुभा दिली. देवाने त्यांना काळ व सीमा ठरवून दिल्या.

27 “त्यांनी देवाचा शोध करावा अशी त्याची इच्छा होती. कदाचित तो त्यांचा शोध करील व त्यांना तो सापडेल. पण तो आमच्या कोणापासूनही दूर नाही. 28 आम्ही त्याच्यासह राहतो आम्ही त्याच्यासह चालतो आम्ही त्याच्यासह आहोत. तुमच्यातीलच काही लोकांनी असे लिहिले आहे: ‘आम्ही त्याची मुले आहोत’

29 “आपण देवाची मुले आहोत. म्हणून इतर लोक ज्या प्रकारे समजतात त्या प्रकारचा देव आहे असे आपण मुळीच समजू नये. तो सोने, चांदी, किंवा दगडासारखा नाही. 30 भूतकाळात लोक देवाला समजू शकले नाहीत पण देवाने त्याकडे दुर्लक्ष केले. पण आता, जगातील प्रत्येक व्यक्तीला देव सांगतो की, त्याने आपले ह्रदय व जीवन बदलावे. 31 देवाने एक दिवस ठरविलेला आहे, ज्या दिवशी तो जगातील प्रत्येक व्यक्तीचा न्याय करील. तो नि:पक्षपाती असेल, हे करण्यासाठी तो एका माणासाचा (येशूचा) वापर करील. देवाने त्याला फार पूर्वीच निवडले आहे. व प्रत्येक माणसाला देवाने हे दाखवून दिले आहे; त्या माणसाला मरणातून पुन्हा उठवून दाखवून दिले आहे!”

17 Now after [Paul and Silas] had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews.

And Paul entered, as he usually did, and for three Sabbaths he reasoned and argued with them from the Scriptures,

Explaining [them] and [quoting passages] setting forth and proving that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead, and saying, This Jesus, Whom I proclaim to you, is the Christ (the Messiah).

And some of them [accordingly] were induced to believe and associated themselves with Paul and Silas, as did a great number of the devout Greeks and not a few of the leading women.

But the unbelieving Jews were aroused to jealousy, and, getting hold of some wicked men (ruffians and rascals) and loungers in the marketplace, they gathered together a mob, set the town in an uproar, and attacked the house of Jason, seeking to bring [Paul and Silas] out to the people.

But when they failed to find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brethren before the city authorities, crying, These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also,

And Jason has received them to his house and privately protected them! And they are all ignoring and acting contrary to the decrees of Caesar, [actually] asserting that there is another king, one Jesus!

And both the crowd and the city authorities, on hearing this, were irritated (stirred up and troubled).

And when they had taken security [bail] from Jason and the others, they let them go.

10 Now the brethren at once sent Paul and Silas away by night to Beroea; and when they arrived, they entered the synagogue of the Jews.

11 Now these [Jews] were better disposed and more noble than those in Thessalonica, for they were entirely ready and accepted and welcomed the message [[a]concerning the attainment through Christ of eternal salvation in the kingdom of God] with inclination of mind and eagerness, searching and examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.

12 Many of them therefore became believers, together with not a few prominent Greeks, women as well as men.

13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica learned that the Word of God [[b]concerning the attainment through Christ of eternal salvation in the kingdom of God] was also preached by Paul at Beroea, they came there too, disturbing and inciting the masses.

14 At once the brethren sent Paul off on his way to the sea, but Silas and Timothy remained behind.

15 Those who escorted Paul brought him as far as Athens; and receiving instructions for Silas and Timothy that they should come to him as soon as possible, they departed.

16 Now while Paul was awaiting them at Athens, his spirit was grieved and roused to anger as he saw that the city was full of idols.

17 So he reasoned and argued in the synagogue with the Jews and those who worshiped there, and in the marketplace [where assemblies are held] day after day with any who chanced to be there.

18 And some also of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him and began to engage in discussion. And some said, What is this babbler with his scrap-heap learning trying to say? Others said, He seems to be an announcer of foreign deities—because he preached Jesus and the resurrection.

19 And they took hold of him and brought him to the [c]Areopagus [Mars Hill meeting place], saying, May we know what this novel (unheard of and unprecedented) teaching is which you are openly declaring?

20 For you set forth some startling things, foreign and strange to our ears; we wish to know therefore just what these things mean—

21 For the Athenians, all of them, and the foreign residents and visitors among them spent all their leisure time in nothing except telling or hearing something newer than the last—

22 So Paul, standing in the center of the Areopagus [Mars Hill meeting place], said: Men of Athens, I perceive in every way [on every hand and with every turn I make] that you are most religious or very reverent to demons.

23 For as I passed along and carefully observed your objects of worship, I came also upon an altar with this inscription, To the unknown god. Now what you are already worshiping as unknown, this I set forth to you.

24 The God Who produced and formed the world and all things in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in handmade shrines.

25 Neither is He served by human hands, as though He lacked anything, for it is He Himself Who gives life and breath and all things to all [people].(A)

26 And He made from one [common origin, one source, one blood] all nations of men to settle on the face of the earth, having definitely determined [their] allotted periods of time and the fixed boundaries of their habitation (their settlements, lands, and abodes),

27 So that they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel after Him and find Him, although He is not far from each one of us.

28 For in Him we live and move and have our being; as even some of your [own] poets have said, For we are also His offspring.

29 Since then we are God’s offspring, we ought not to suppose that Deity (the Godhead) is like gold or silver or stone, [of the nature of] a representation by human art and imagination, or anything constructed or invented.

30 Such [former] ages of ignorance God, it is true, ignored and allowed to pass unnoticed; but now He charges all people everywhere to repent ([d]to change their minds for the better and heartily to amend their ways, with abhorrence of their past sins),

31 Because He has fixed a day when He will judge the world righteously (justly) by a Man Whom He has destined and appointed for that task, and He has made this credible and given conviction and assurance and evidence to everyone by raising Him from the dead.(B)

32 Now when they had heard [that there had been] a resurrection from the dead, some scoffed; but others said, We will hear you again about this matter.

33 So Paul went out from among them.

34 But some men were on his side and joined him and believed (became Christians); among them were Dionysius, a judge of the Areopagus, and a woman named Damaris, and some others with them.
