⁶ But when they did not find them, they dragged^(A) Jason and some other believers^(B) before the city officials, shouting: “These men who have caused trouble all over the world^(C) have now come here,^(D)

⁵ “We have found this man to be a troublemaker, stirring up riots^(A) among the Jews^(B) all over the world. He is a ringleader of the Nazarene^(C) sect^(D)

¹⁹ When her owners realized that their hope of making money^(A) was gone, they seized Paul and Silas^(B) and dragged^(C) them into the marketplace to face the authorities. ²⁰ They brought them before the magistrates and said, “These men are Jews, and are throwing our city into an uproar^{(D) 21} by advocating customs unlawful for us Romans^(E) to accept or practice.”^(F)

²² But we want to hear what your views are, for we know that people everywhere are talking against this sect.”^(A)

⁵ But they insisted, “He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching. He started in Galilee^(A) and has come all the way here.”

²⁸ shouting, “Fellow Israelites, help us! This is the man who teaches everyone everywhere against our people and our law and this place. And besides, he has brought Greeks into the temple and defiled this holy place.”^{(A) 29} (They had previously seen Trophimus^(B) the Ephesian^(C) in the city with Paul and assumed that Paul had brought him into the temple.)

³⁰ The whole city was aroused, and the people came running from all directions. Seizing Paul,^(D) they dragged him^(E) from the temple, and immediately the gates were shut. ³¹ While they were trying to kill him, news reached the commander of the Roman troops that the whole city of Jerusalem was in an uproar.

¹² While Gallio was proconsul^(A) of Achaia,^(B) the Jews of Corinth made a united attack on Paul and brought him to the place of judgment. ¹³ “This man,” they charged, “is persuading the people to worship God in ways contrary to the law.”

¹⁴ And this gospel of the kingdom^(A) will be preached in the whole world^(B) as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

² “This is what the Lord says: ‘Whoever stays in this city will die by the sword, famine or plague,^(A) but whoever goes over to the Babylonians^[a] will live. They will escape with their lives; they will live.’^{(B) 3} And this is what the Lord says: ‘This city will certainly be given into the hands of the army of the king of Babylon, who will capture it.’”^(C)

⁴ Then the officials^(D) said to the king, “This man should be put to death.^(E) He is discouraging^(F) the soldiers who are left in this city, as well as all the people, by the things he is saying to them. This man is not seeking the good of these people but their ruin.”
