²¹ Now all the Athenians and the foreigners living there would spend their time in nothing but telling or hearing something new.

¹⁶ Avoid profane chatter, for it will lead people^[a] into more and more impiety,^{(A) 17} and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus,^(B)

⁵ Conduct yourselves wisely toward outsiders, making the most of the time.^[a](A)

¹³ Besides that, they learn to be idle, gadding about from house to house, and they are not merely idle but also gossips and busybodies, saying what they should not say.^(A)

¹¹ For we hear that some of you are living irresponsibly, mere busybodies, not doing any work.^{(A) 12} Now such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living.^(B)
