¹⁸ Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also conversed with him. And some said, ^(A)“What does this babbler wish to say?” Others said, “He seems to be a preacher of foreign divinities”—because ^(B)he was preaching ^(C)Jesus and the resurrection.

^20 (A)Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? ^(B)Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? ²¹ For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach^[a] to save those who believe.

⁵³ As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard and to provoke him to speak about many things,

⁸ See to it that no one takes you captive by ^(A)philosophy and ^(B)empty deceit, according to ^(C)human tradition, according to the ^(D)elemental spirits^[a] of the world, and not according to Christ.

^10 (A)We are fools for Christ's sake, but ^(B)you are wise in Christ. ^(C)We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute.

³¹ because he has fixed ^(A)a day on which ^(B)he will judge the world ^(C)in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and ^(D)of this he has given assurance to all ^(E)by raising him from the dead.”
