The Philippian Jailer Converted

(A)About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them, 26 and suddenly (B)there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately (C)all the doors were opened, and (D)everyone's bonds were unfastened. 27 When the jailer woke and saw that the prison doors were open, he drew his sword and (E)was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.” 29 And the jailer[a] called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he (F)fell down before Paul and Silas. 30 Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, (G)what must I do to be (H)saved?” 31 And they said, (I)“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you (J)and your household.” 32 And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. 33 And he took them (K)the same hour of the night and washed their wounds; and he (L)was baptized at once, he and all his family. 34 Then he brought them up into his house and set food before them. And he (M)rejoiced along with his entire household that he had believed in God.

Around midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly, there was an earthquake so violent that the foundations of the prison were shaken. All the doors immediately flew open, and everyone’s chains were unfastened.

When the jailer woke up and saw the prison doors wide open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, since he thought the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul shouted in a loud voice, “Don’t hurt yourself, because we are all here!”

The jailer[a] asked for torches and rushed inside. Trembling as he knelt in front of Paul and Silas, 30 he took them outside and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

They answered, “Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you and your family will be saved.” 32 Then they spoke the word of the Lord[b] to him and everyone in his home.

At that hour of the night, he took them and washed their wounds. Then he and his entire family were baptized immediately. 34 He brought Paul and Silas[c] upstairs into his house and set food before them. He was thrilled, as was his household, to believe in God.
