19 But when her masters saw that their hope of (A)profit had left, they seized (B)Paul and Silas and (C)dragged them into the marketplace before the authorities, 20 and when they had brought them to the chief magistrates, they said, “These men are throwing our city into confusion, being Jews, 21 and (D)are proclaiming customs that are not lawful for us to accept or to observe, being (E)Romans.” 22 And the crowd joined together to attack them, and the chief magistrates, tearing their garments off of them, proceeded to order them to be (F)beaten with rods. 23 And when they had inflicted them with many wounds, they threw them into prison, commanding (G)the jailer to guard them securely, 24 who, having received such a command, threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in (H)the [a]stocks.

19 But when her owners saw that their hope of gain was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the market place before the rulers; 20 and when they had brought them to the magistrates they said, “These men are Jews and they are disturbing our city. 21 They advocate customs which it is not lawful for us Romans to accept or practice.” 22 The crowd joined in attacking them; and the magistrates tore the garments off them and gave orders to beat them with rods. 23 And when they had inflicted many blows upon them, they threw them into prison, charging the jailer to keep them safely. 24 Having received this charge, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.
