19 But when her masters saw that their hope of (A)profit had left, they seized (B)Paul and Silas and (C)dragged them into the marketplace before the authorities, 20 and when they had brought them to the chief magistrates, they said, “These men are throwing our city into confusion, being Jews, 21 and (D)are proclaiming customs that are not lawful for us to accept or to observe, being (E)Romans.” 22 And the crowd joined together to attack them, and the chief magistrates, tearing their garments off of them, proceeded to order them to be (F)beaten with rods. 23 And when they had inflicted them with many wounds, they threw them into prison, commanding (G)the jailer to guard them securely, 24 who, having received such a command, threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in (H)the [a]stocks.

They are Jews 21 who promote customs that we Romans can’t accept or practice.” 22 The crowd joined in the attacks against Paul and Silas, so the authorities ordered that they be stripped of their clothes and beaten with a rod. 23 When Paul and Silas had been severely beaten, the authorities threw them into prison and ordered the jailer to secure them with great care. 24 When he received these instructions, he threw them into the innermost cell and secured their feet in stocks.
