Timothy Joins Paul and Silas
16 Paul[a] came also to Derbe and to Lystra. A disciple was there, named (A)Timothy, (B)the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek. 2 He was well spoken of by (C)the brothers[b] at Lystra and Iconium. 3 Paul wanted Timothy to accompany him, and he (D)took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those places, for they all knew that his father was a Greek. 4 As they went on their way through the cities, they delivered to them for observance (E)the decisions (F)that had been reached by (G)the apostles and elders who were in Jerusalem. 5 (H)So the churches were strengthened in (I)the faith, and they increased in numbers (J)daily.
The Macedonian Call
6 And (K)they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. 7 And when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but (L)the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them. 8 So, passing by Mysia, they went down (M)to Troas. 9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10 And when Paul[c] had seen the vision, immediately (N)we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.
The Conversion of Lydia
11 So, setting sail from Troas, we (O)made a direct voyage to Samothrace, and the following day to Neapolis, 12 and from there to (P)Philippi, which is a leading city of the[d] district of Macedonia and (Q)a Roman colony. We remained in this city some days. 13 And (R)on the Sabbath day we went outside the gate (S)to the riverside, where we supposed there was a place of prayer, and we (T)sat down and spoke to the women who had come together. 14 One who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, (U)who was a worshiper of God. The Lord (V)opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul. 15 And after she was baptized, (W)and her household as well, she urged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.” And she (X)prevailed upon us.

16 As we were going to (Y)the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had (Z)a spirit of (AA)divination and (AB)brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling. 17 She followed Paul and us, (AC)crying out, “These men are (AD)servants of (AE)the Most High God, who proclaim to you (AF)the way of salvation.” 18 And this she kept doing for many days. Paul, having become greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, (AG)“I command you (AH)in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And (AI)it came out that very hour.
19 But (AJ)when her owners saw that their hope of gain was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and (AK)dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers. 20 And when they had brought them to the magistrates, they said, “These men are Jews, and they are disturbing our city. 21 They (AL)advocate customs that are not lawful for us (AM)as Romans to accept or practice.” 22 The crowd joined in attacking them, and the magistrates tore the garments off them and gave orders (AN)to beat them with rods. 23 And when they had inflicted many blows upon them, they threw them into prison, ordering the jailer to keep them safely. 24 Having received this order, he put them into the inner (AO)prison and fastened their feet in (AP)the stocks.

25 (AQ)About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them, 26 and suddenly (AR)there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately (AS)all the doors were opened, and (AT)everyone's bonds were unfastened. 27 When the jailer woke and saw that the prison doors were open, he drew his sword and (AU)was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.” 29 And the jailer[e] called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he (AV)fell down before Paul and Silas. 30 Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, (AW)what must I do to be (AX)saved?” 31 And they said, (AY)“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you (AZ)and your household.” 32 And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. 33 And he took them (BA)the same hour of the night and washed their wounds; and he (BB)was baptized at once, he and all his family. 34 Then he brought them up into his house and set food before them. And he (BC)rejoiced along with his entire household that he had believed in God.
35 But when it was day, the magistrates sent the police, saying, “Let those men go.” 36 And the jailer reported these words to Paul, saying, “The magistrates have sent to let you go. Therefore come out now and go in peace.” 37 But Paul said to them, “They have beaten us publicly, (BD)uncondemned, men who are Roman citizens, and have thrown us into prison; and do they now throw us out secretly? No! Let them come themselves and take us out.” 38 The police reported these words to the magistrates, and (BE)they were afraid when they heard that they were Roman citizens. 39 So they came and apologized to them. And they took them out and (BF)asked them to leave the city. 40 So they went out of the prison and visited (BG)Lydia. And when they had seen (BH)the brothers, they encouraged them and departed.

Şi iată că acolo era un ucenic numit(B) Timotei, fiul(C) unei iudeice credincioase şi al unui tată grec. 2 Fraţii(D) din Listra şi Iconia îl vorbeau de bine. 3 Pavel a vrut să-l ia cu el şi, după ce l-a luat(E), l-a tăiat împrejur, din pricina iudeilor, care erau în acele locuri, căci toţi ştiau că tatăl lui era grec. 4 Pe când trecea prin cetăţi, învăţa pe fraţi să păzească hotărârile(F) apostolilor şi prezbiterilor din Ierusalim. 5 Bisericile(G) se întăreau în credinţă şi sporeau la număr din zi în zi. 6 Fiindcă au fost opriţi de Duhul Sfânt să vestească Cuvântul în Asia, au trecut prin ţinutul Frigiei şi Galatiei. 7 Ajunşi lângă Misia, se pregăteau să intre în Bitinia dar Duhul lui Isus nu le-a dat voie. 8 Au trecut atunci prin Misia şi s-au(H) pogorât la Troa. 9 Noaptea, Pavel a avut o vedenie: un om(I) din(J) Macedonia stătea în picioare şi i-a făcut următoarea rugăminte: „Treci în Macedonia şi ajută-ne!” 10 După vedenia aceasta a lui Pavel, am căutat îndată să ne ducem în Macedonia, căci înţelegeam că Domnul ne cheamă să le vestim Evanghelia.

11 După ce am pornit din Troa, am mers cu corabia drept la Samotracia şi a doua zi ne-am oprit la Neapolis. 12 De acolo ne-am dus la Filipi(K), care este cea dintâi cetate dintr-un ţinut al Macedoniei şi o colonie romană. În cetatea aceasta am stat câteva zile. 13 În ziua Sabatului, am ieşit pe poarta cetăţii, lângă un râu, unde credeam că se află un loc de rugăciune. Am şezut jos şi am vorbit femeilor, care erau adunate laolaltă. 14 Una din ele, numită Lidia, vânzătoare de purpură, din cetatea Tiatira, era o femeie temătoare de Dumnezeu şi asculta. Domnul i-a(L) deschis inima, ca să ia aminte la cele ce spunea Pavel. 15 După ce a fost botezată, ea şi casa ei, ne-a rugat şi ne-a zis: „Dacă mă socotiţi credincioasă Domnului, intraţi şi rămâneţi în casa mea”. Şi ne-a(M) silit să intrăm.

16 Pe când ne duceam la locul de rugăciune, ne-a ieşit înainte o roabă, care(N) avea un duh de ghicire[a]. Prin ghicire, ea aducea mult câştig(O) stăpânilor ei. 17 Roaba aceasta s-a luat după Pavel şi după noi şi striga: „Oamenii aceştia sunt robii Dumnezeului Celui Preaînalt şi ei vă vestesc calea mântuirii”. 18 Aşa a făcut ea timp de mai multe zile. Pavel, necăjit(P), s-a întors şi a zis duhului: „În Numele lui Isus Hristos îţi poruncesc să ieşi din ea”. Şi(Q) a ieşit chiar în ceasul acela. 19 Când au văzut(R) stăpânii roabei că s-a dus nădejdea câştigului lor, au pus mâna(S) pe Pavel şi pe Sila şi i-au(T) târât în piaţă înaintea fruntaşilor. 20 I-au dat pe mâna dregătorilor şi au zis: „Oamenii aceştia ne tulbură(U) cetatea; sunt nişte iudei 21 care vestesc nişte obiceiuri pe care noi, romanii, nu trebuie nici să le primim, nici să le urmăm”. 22 Norodul s-a ridicat şi el împotriva lor, şi dregătorii au pus să le smulgă hainele de pe ei şi au(V) poruncit să-i bată cu nuiele. 23 După ce le-au dat multe lovituri, i-au aruncat în temniţă şi au dat în grijă temnicerului să-i păzească bine. 24 Temnicerul, ca unul care primise o astfel de poruncă, i-a aruncat în temniţa dinăuntru şi le-a băgat picioarele în butuci. 25 Pe la miezul nopţii, Pavel şi Sila se rugau şi cântau cântări de laudă lui Dumnezeu, iar cei închişi îi ascultau. 26 Deodată(W), s-a făcut un mare cutremur de pământ, aşa că s-au clătinat temeliile temniţei. Îndată, s-au deschis toate uşile şi s-au(X) dezlegat legăturile fiecăruia. 27 Temnicerul s-a deşteptat şi, când a văzut uşile temniţei deschise, a scos sabia şi era să se omoare, căci credea că cei închişi au fugit. 28 Dar Pavel a strigat cu glas tare: „Să nu-ţi faci niciun rău, căci toţi suntem aici”. 29 Atunci, temnicerul a cerut o lumină, a sărit înăuntru şi, tremurând de frică, s-a aruncat la picioarele lui Pavel şi ale lui Sila, 30 i-a scos afară şi le-a zis: „Domnilor(Y), ce trebuie să fac ca să fiu mântuit?” 31 Pavel şi Sila i-au răspuns: „Crede(Z) în Domnul Isus şi vei fi mântuit, tu şi casa ta”. 32 Şi i-au vestit Cuvântul Domnului, atât lui, cât şi tuturor celor din casa lui. 33 Temnicerul i-a luat cu el chiar în ceasul acela din noapte, le-a spălat rănile şi a fost botezat îndată, el şi toţi ai lui. 34 După ce i-a dus în casă, le-a(AA) pus masa şi s-a bucurat cu toată casa lui că a crezut în Dumnezeu.

35 Când s-a făcut ziuă, dregătorii au trimis pe cei ce purtau nuielele[b] să spună temnicerului: „Dă drumul oamenilor acelora”. 36 Şi temnicerul a spus lui Pavel aceste cuvinte: „Dregătorii au trimis să vi se dea drumul, acum dar, ieşiţi afară şi duceţi-vă în pace”. 37 Dar Pavel le-a zis: „După ce ne-au bătut cu nuiele în faţa tuturor fără să fim judecaţi, pe noi, care(AB) suntem romani, ne-au aruncat în temniţă, şi acum ne scot afară pe ascuns! Nu merge aşa! Să vină ei singuri să ne scoată afară!” 38 Cei ce purtau nuielele au spus aceste cuvinte dregătorilor. Aceştia s-au temut când au auzit că sunt romani. 39 Dregătorii au venit să-i potolească, i-au scos afară din temniţă şi i-au(AC) rugat să părăsească cetatea. 40 Ei au ieşit din temniţă şi au(AD) intrat în casa Lidiei; şi, după ce au văzut şi mângâiat pe fraţi, au plecat.

16 And he came also to Derbe and to Lystra: and behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewess that believed; but his father was a Greek. 2 The same was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium. 3 Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and he took and circumcised him because of the Jews that were in those parts: for they all knew that his father was a Greek. 4 And as they went on their way through the cities, they delivered them the decrees to keep which had been ordained of the apostles and elders that were at Jerusalem. 5 So the churches were strengthened [a]in the faith, and increased in number daily.
6 And they went through [b]the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden of the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia; 7 and when they were come over against Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia; and the Spirit of Jesus suffered them not; 8 and passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas. 9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: There was a man of Macedonia standing, beseeching him, and saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us. 10 And when he had seen the vision, straightway we sought to go forth into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to [c]preach the gospel unto them.

But Paul, being sore troubled, turned and said to the spirit, I charge thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And it came out that very hour.
19 But when her masters saw that the hope of their gain was [h]gone, they laid hold on Paul and Silas, and dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers, 20 and when they had brought them unto the [i]magistrates, they said, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city, 21 and set forth customs which it is not lawful for us to receive, or to observe, being Romans. 22 And the multitude rose up together against them: and the [j]magistrates rent their garments off them, and commanded to beat them with rods. 23 And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely: 24 who, having received such a charge, cast them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks. 25 But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns unto God, and the prisoners were listening to them; 26 and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison-house were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened; and every one’s bands were loosed. 27 And the jailor, being roused out of sleep and seeing the prison doors open, drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here. 29 And he called for lights and sprang in, and, trembling for fear, fell down before Paul and Silas, 30 and brought them out and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? 31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus, and thou shalt be saved, thou and thy house. 32 And they spake the word of [k]the Lord unto him, with all that were in his house. 33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, immediately. 34 And he brought them up into his house, and set [l]food before them, and rejoiced greatly, with all his house, [m]having believed in God.
35 But when it was day, the [n]magistrates sent the [o]serjeants, saying, Let those men go. 36 And the jailor reported the words to Paul, saying, The [p]magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore come forth, and go in peace. 37 But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us publicly, uncondemned, men that are Romans, and have cast us into prison; and do they now cast us out privily? nay verily; but let them come themselves and bring us out. 38 And the [q]serjeants reported these words unto the [r]magistrates: and they feared when they heard that they were Romans; 39 and they came and besought them; and when they had brought them out, they asked them to go away from the city. 40 And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they [s]comforted them, and departed.
