Growth and Persecution in Iconium
14 In Iconium they entered the Jewish synagogue, as usual, and spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks believed.(A) 2 But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers.(B) 3 So they stayed there a long time and spoke boldly for the Lord, who testified to the message of his grace by enabling them to do signs and wonders.(C) 4 But the people of the city were divided, some siding with the Jews and others with the apostles.(D) 5 When an attempt was made by both the Gentiles and Jews, with their rulers, to mistreat and stone them, 6 they found out about it and fled to the Lycaonian towns of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding countryside.(E) 7 There they continued preaching the gospel.(F)
Mistaken for Gods in Lystra
8 In Lystra a man was sitting who was without strength in his feet, had never walked, and had been lame from birth. 9 He listened as Paul spoke. After looking directly at him and seeing that he had faith to be healed, 10 Paul said in a loud voice, “Stand up on your feet!” And he jumped up and began to walk around.(G)
11 When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they shouted, saying in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have come down to us in human form!” (H) 12 Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul, Hermes, because he was the chief speaker. 13 The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the town, brought bulls and wreaths to the gates because he intended, with the crowds, to offer sacrifice.
14 The apostles Barnabas and Paul tore their robes when they heard this and rushed into the crowd, shouting,(I) 15 “People! Why are you doing these things? We are people also, just like you, and we are proclaiming good news to you, that you turn from these worthless things(J) to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and everything in them.[a](K) 16 In past generations he allowed all the nations(L) to go their own way, 17 although he did not leave himself without a witness,(M) since he did what is good by giving you rain from heaven and fruitful seasons(N) and filling you with food and your hearts with joy.” 18 Even though they said these things, they barely stopped the crowds from sacrificing to them.
19 Some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and when they won over the crowds, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, thinking he was dead.(O) 20 After the disciples gathered around him, he got up and went into the town. The next day he left with Barnabas for Derbe.(P)
Church Planting
21 After they had preached the gospel in that town and made many disciples, they returned to Lystra, to Iconium, and to Antioch,(Q) 22 strengthening the[b] disciples by encouraging them to continue in the faith(R) and by telling them, “It is necessary to go through many hardships(S) to enter the kingdom of God.” 23 When they had appointed elders(T) for them in every church and prayed with fasting, they committed them to the Lord in whom they had believed.
24 They passed through Pisidia and came to Pamphylia. 25 After they had spoken the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia. 26 From there they sailed back to Antioch where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work they had now completed.(U) 27 After they arrived and gathered the church together, they reported everything God had done with them(V) and that he had opened the door(W) of faith to the Gentiles. 28 And they spent a considerable time with the disciples.

14 În Iconia, Pavel şi Barnaba au intrat în sinagoga iudeilor şi au vorbit în aşa fel că o mare mulţime de iudei şi de greci au crezut. 2 Dar iudeii care n-au crezut au întărâtat şi au răzvrătit sufletele neamurilor împotriva fraţilor. 3 Totuşi au rămas destul de multă vreme în Iconia şi vorbeau cu îndrăzneală în Domnul, care(A) adeverea Cuvântul privitor la harul Său şi îngăduia să se facă semne şi minuni prin mâinile lor. 4 Mulţimea din cetate s-a dezbinat: unii erau cu iudeii, alţii cu apostolii(B). 5 Neamurile şi iudeii, în învoire cu mai-marii lor, s-au pus în mişcare, ca să-i(C) batjocorească şi să-i ucidă cu pietre. 6 Pavel şi Barnaba au înţeles lucrul acesta şi au fugit(D) în cetăţile Licaoniei: Listra şi Derbe şi în ţinutul de primprejur. 7 Şi au propovăduit Evanghelia acolo.
Vindecarea unui olog
8 În(E) Listra era un om neputincios de picioare, olog din naştere, care nu umblase niciodată. 9 El şedea jos şi asculta pe Pavel când vorbea. Pavel s-a uitat ţintă la el, şi, fiindcă a văzut(F) că are credinţă ca să fie tămăduit, 10 a zis cu glas tare: „Scoală-te(G) drept în picioare”. Şi el s-a sculat dintr-o săritură şi a început să umble. 11 La vederea celor făcute de Pavel, noroadele şi-au ridicat glasul şi au zis în limba licaoniană: „Zeii(H) s-au pogorât la noi în chip omenesc”. 12 Pe Barnaba îl numeau Jupiter, iar pe Pavel, Mercur, pentru că mânuia cuvântul. 13 Preotul lui Jupiter, al cărui templu era la intrarea cetăţii, a adus tauri şi cununi înaintea porţilor şi voia(I) să le aducă jertfă, împreună cu noroadele. 14 Apostolii Barnaba şi Pavel, când au auzit lucrul acesta, şi-au(J) rupt hainele, au sărit în mijlocul norodului şi au strigat: 15 „Oamenilor, de(K) ce faceţi lucrul acesta? Şi noi suntem(L) oameni de aceeaşi fire cu voi; noi vă aducem o veste bună, ca să vă întoarceţi de la aceste lucruri(M) deşarte(N) la Dumnezeul cel viu, care(O) a făcut cerul, pământul şi marea şi tot ce este în ele. 16 El(P), în veacurile trecute, a lăsat pe toate neamurile să umble pe căile lor, 17 măcar că(Q), drept vorbind, nu s-a lăsat fără mărturie, întrucât v-a făcut bine, v-a trimis(R) ploi din cer şi timpuri roditoare, v-a dat hrană din belşug şi v-a umplut inimile de bucurie.” 18 Abia au putut să împiedice, cu vorbele acestea, pe noroade, să le aducă jertfă.
Pavel în Derbe şi Antiohia
19 Atunci, au venit pe neaşteptate din(S) Antiohia şi Iconia nişte iudei, care au aţâţat pe noroade. Aceştia, după ce au împroşcat(T) pe Pavel cu pietre, l-au târât afară din cetate, crezând că a murit. 20 Când l-au înconjurat însă ucenicii, Pavel s-a sculat şi a intrat în cetate. A doua zi, a plecat cu Barnaba la Derbe. 21 După ce au propovăduit Evanghelia în cetatea aceasta şi(U) au făcut mulţi ucenici, s-au întors la Listra, la Iconia şi la Antiohia, 22 Întărind sufletele ucenicilor. El îi îndemna(V) să stăruie în credinţă şi spunea că în Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu trebuie(W) să intrăm prin multe necazuri. 23 Au(X) rânduit prezbiteri în fiecare biserică şi, după ce s-au rugat şi au postit, i-au încredinţat în mâna Domnului, în care crezuseră. 24 Au trecut apoi prin Pisidia, au venit în Pamfilia, 25 au vestit Cuvântul în Perga şi s-au pogorât la Atalia. 26 De(Y) acolo au mers cu corabia la Antiohia, de unde fuseseră încredinţaţi(Z) în grija harului lui Dumnezeu pentru lucrarea pe care o săvârşiseră. 27 După venirea lor, au adunat biserica şi au(AA) istorisit tot ce făcuse Dumnezeu prin ei şi cum deschisese(AB) neamurilor uşa credinţei. 28 Şi au rămas destul de multă vreme acolo, cu ucenicii.

At Iconium
14 Now it happened in Iconium that they went together to the synagogue of the Jews, and so spoke that a great multitude both of the Jews and of the (A)Greeks believed. 2 But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and [a]poisoned their [b]minds against the brethren. 3 Therefore they stayed there a long time, speaking boldly in the Lord, (B)who was bearing witness to the word of His grace, granting signs and (C)wonders to be done by their hands.
4 But the multitude of the city was (D)divided: part sided with the Jews, and part with the (E)apostles. 5 And when a violent attempt was made by both the Gentiles and Jews, with their rulers, (F)to abuse and stone them, 6 they became aware of it and (G)fled to Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the surrounding region. 7 And they were preaching the gospel there.
Idolatry at Lystra
8 (H)And in Lystra a certain man without strength in his feet was sitting, a cripple from his mother’s womb, who had never walked. 9 This man heard Paul speaking. [c]Paul, observing him intently and seeing that he had faith to be healed, 10 said with a loud voice, (I)“Stand up straight on your feet!” And he leaped and walked. 11 Now when the people saw what Paul had done, they raised their voices, saying in the Lycaonian language, (J)“The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!” 12 And Barnabas they called [d]Zeus, and Paul, [e]Hermes, because he was the chief speaker. 13 Then the priest of Zeus, whose temple was in front of their city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, (K)intending to sacrifice with the multitudes.
14 But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard this, (L)they tore their clothes and ran in among the multitude, crying out 15 and saying, “Men, (M)why are you doing these things? (N)We also are men with the same nature as you, and preach to you that you should turn from (O)these useless things (P)to the living God, (Q)who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and all things that are in them, 16 (R)who in bygone generations allowed all nations to walk in their own ways. 17 (S)Nevertheless He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good, (T)gave us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with (U)food and gladness.” 18 And with these sayings they could scarcely restrain the multitudes from sacrificing to them.
Stoning, Escape to Derbe
19 (V)Then Jews from Antioch and Iconium came there; and having persuaded the multitudes, (W)they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing him to be (X)dead. 20 However, when the disciples gathered around him, he rose up and went into the city. And the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe.
Strengthening the Converts
21 And when they had preached the gospel to that city (Y)and made many disciples, they returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch, 22 strengthening the souls of the disciples, (Z)exhorting them to continue in the faith, and saying, (AA)“We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God.” 23 So when they had (AB)appointed elders in every church, and prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed. 24 And after they had passed through Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia. 25 Now when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia. 26 From there they sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work which they had completed.
27 Now when they had come and gathered the church together, (AC)they reported all that God had done with them, and that He had (AD)opened the door of faith to the Gentiles. 28 So they stayed there a long time with the disciples.
