13 Now there were (A)prophets and (B)teachers at (C)Antioch, in the (D)church that was there: (E)Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of (F)Cyrene, Manaen who had been brought up with (G)Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. 2 While they were [a]serving the Lord and fasting, (H)the Holy Spirit said, “Set (I)Barnabas and Saul apart for Me for (J)the work to which I have called them.” 3 Then, when they had fasted, (K)prayed, and (L)laid their hands on them, (M)they sent them away.

4 So, being (N)sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia and from there they sailed to (O)Cyprus. 5 When they reached Salamis, they began to proclaim the word of God in (P)the synagogues of the Jews; and they also had (Q)John as their helper. 6 When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they found a (R)magician, a Jewish (S)false prophet whose name was Bar-Jesus, 7 who was with the (T)proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence. This man summoned Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God. 8 But Elymas the (U)magician (for so his name is translated) was opposing them, seeking to turn the (V)proconsul away from (W)the faith. 9 But Saul, who was also known as Paul, [b](X)filled with the Holy Spirit, stared at him, 10 and said, “[c]You who are full of all deceit and fraud, you (Y)son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not stop making crooked (Z)the straight ways of the Lord? 11 Now, behold, (AA)the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you will be blind and not see the sun for a time.” And immediately a mist and a darkness fell upon him, and he went about seeking those who would lead him by the hand. 12 Then the (AB)proconsul believed when he saw what had happened, being amazed at (AC)the teaching of the Lord.

13 Now Paul and his companions put out to sea from (AD)Paphos and came to (AE)Perga in (AF)Pamphylia; but (AG)John left them and returned to Jerusalem. 14 But going on from Perga, they arrived at (AH)Pisidian (AI)Antioch, and on (AJ)the Sabbath day they went into (AK)the synagogue and sat down. 15 After (AL)the reading of the Law and (AM)the Prophets, (AN)the synagogue officials sent word to them, saying, “[d]Brothers, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say it.” 16 Paul stood up, and (AO)motioning with his hand said,

“Men of Israel, and (AP)you who fear God, listen: 17 The God of this people Israel (AQ)chose our fathers and [e](AR)made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with an uplifted arm (AS)He led them out from it. 18 For (AT)a period of about forty years (AU)He put up with them in the wilderness. 19 (AV)When He had destroyed (AW)seven nations in the land of Canaan, He (AX)distributed their land as an inheritance—all of which took (AY)about 450 years. 20 After these things He (AZ)gave them judges until (BA)Samuel the prophet. 21 Then they (BB)asked for a king, and God gave them (BC)Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. 22 After He had (BD)removed him, He raised up David to be their king, concerning whom He also testified and said, ‘(BE)I have found David, the son of Jesse, a man after My heart, who will do all My [f]will.’ 23 (BF)From the descendants of this man, (BG)according to promise, God has brought to Israel (BH)a Savior, Jesus, 24 after (BI)John had proclaimed, before [g]His coming, a (BJ)baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. 25 And while John (BK)was completing his course, (BL)he kept saying, ‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not He. But behold, One is coming after me, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.’

26 “[h]Brothers, sons of Abraham’s family, and those among you who fear God, to us the message of (BM)this salvation has been sent. 27 For those who live in Jerusalem, and their (BN)rulers, (BO)recognizing neither Him nor the [i]declarations of (BP)the prophets which are (BQ)read every Sabbath, fulfilled these by condemning Him. 28 And though they found no grounds for putting Him to death, they (BR)asked Pilate that He be executed. 29 When they had (BS)carried out everything that was written concerning Him, (BT)they took Him down from the [j](BU)cross and (BV)laid Him in a tomb. 30 But God (BW)raised Him from the dead; 31 and for many days (BX)He appeared to those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, the very ones who are now (BY)His witnesses to the people. 32 And we (BZ)preach to you the good news of (CA)the promise made to the fathers, 33 that God has fulfilled this promise to those of us who are the descendants by (CB)raising Jesus, as it is also written in the second Psalm: ‘(CC)You are My Son; today I have fathered You.’ 34 As for the fact that He (CD)raised Him from the dead, never again to return to decay, He has spoken in this way: ‘(CE)I will give you the holy and faithful mercies of David.’ 35 Therefore, He also says in another Psalm: ‘(CF)You will not [k]allow Your [l]Holy One to [m]undergo decay.’ 36 For (CG)David, after he had [n]served God’s (CH)purpose in his own generation, (CI)fell asleep, and was [o]buried among his fathers and [p]underwent decay; 37 but He whom God (CJ)raised did not [q]undergo decay. 38 Therefore let it be known to you, [r]brothers, that (CK)through [s]Him forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, 39 and [t]through Him (CL)everyone who believes is [u]freed from all things, from which you could not be [v]freed [w]through the Law of Moses. 40 Therefore, see that the thing spoken of (CM)in the Prophets does not come upon you:

41 ‘(CN)Look, you scoffers, and be astonished, and [x]perish;
For I am accomplishing a work in your days,
A work which you will never believe, though someone should describe it to you.’”

42 As [y]Paul and Barnabas were going out, the people repeatedly begged to have these [z]things spoken to them the next (CO)Sabbath. 43 Now when the meeting of the synagogue had broken up, many of the Jews and the (CP)God-fearing [aa](CQ)proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who were speaking to them and urging them to continue in (CR)the grace of God.

Paul Turns to the Gentiles

44 The next (CS)Sabbath nearly all the city assembled to hear the word of [ab]the Lord. 45 But when (CT)the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began contradicting the things spoken by Paul, and were [ac]blaspheming. 46 Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you (CU)first. Since you repudiate it and consider yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, (CV)we are turning to the Gentiles. 47 For so the Lord has commanded us,

‘(CW)I have appointed You as a (CX)light [ad]to the Gentiles,
That You may [ae]bring salvation to the end of the earth.’”

48 When the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying (CY)the word of [af]the Lord; and all who (CZ)had been appointed to eternal life believed. 49 And (DA)the word of the Lord was being spread through the whole region. 50 But (DB)the Jews incited the [ag](DC)devout women (DD)of prominence and the leading men of the city, and instigated a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their [ah]region. 51 But (DE)they shook off the dust from their feet in protest against them and went to (DF)Iconium. 52 And the disciples were continually (DG)filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

13 I församlingen i Antiochia fanns profeter och lärare: Barnabas, Symeon, som också kallades Niger[a], Lucius från Kyrene, Manaen som hade vuxit upp tillsammans med tetrarken Herodes, och Saul. 2 En gång när dessa män tillbad Herren och fastade, sa den heliga Anden: ”Avdela Barnabas och Saul för en speciell uppgift som jag har kallat dem till.” 3 Och sedan de fastat och bett, lade de sina händer på dem och skickade iväg dem.

4 Efter att dessa två sänts ut av den heliga Anden, reste de ner till Seleukia och seglade över till Cypern. 5 När de kom till Salamis, förkunnade de Guds ord i de judiska synagogorna. Johannes följde med dem som medhjälpare.

6 Sedan reste de över hela ön och till slut kom de till Pafos. Där träffade de en judisk trollkarl som hette Barjesus, en falsk profet. 7 Han brukade ofta besöka den romerska landshövdingen Sergius Paulus som var en mycket klok man.

Landshövdingen bjöd nu hem Barnabas och Saul till sig eftersom han ville höra Guds ord. 8 Men Elymas, trollkarlen (det är vad hans namn betyder) motarbetade dem och försökte hindra landshövdingen från att tro.

9 Då blev Saul som även kallades Paulus, fylld av den heliga Anden och han spände ögonen i trollkarlen 10 och sa: ”Du djävulens son, full av bedrägeri och falskhet, en fiende till allt rättfärdigt, ska du aldrig sluta med att förvränga Herrens raka vägar? 11 Nu tar Herren tag i dig. Du ska bli blind under en tid så att du inte ser solen.”

I samma stund sänkte sig dimma och mörker över trollkarlen och han började irra omkring och leta efter någon som kunde leda honom. 12 När landshövdingen såg vad som hände, började han tro för han var helt förundrad över undervisningen om Herren.

Paulus tal i Antiochia i Pisidien

13 Paulus och hans följeslagare lämnade nu Pafos och seglade till Perge i Pamfylien. Där lämnade Johannes dem och återvände till Jerusalem. 14 Men Barnabas och Paulus fortsatte från Perge till Antiochia i Pisidien[b].

När det sedan blev sabbat, gick de till synagogan och satte sig. 15 Efter läsningen ur lagen och profeterna vände sig synagogföreståndarna till Paulus och Barnabas och sa: ”Bröder, om ni har något att säga som kan vara till uppmuntran för folket, så gör det!”

16 Då reste sig Paulus, gav tecken till dem att vara tysta och sa: ”Israeliter och alla andra här som fruktar Gud, lyssna på mig!

17 Vårt folk Israels Gud utvalde våra förfäder. Och han lät folket bli mycket stort när de bodde som främlingar i Egypten. Sedan ledde han dem ut därifrån på ett mäktigt sätt. 18 Under fyrtio år hade Gud tålamod med dem i öknen 19 och sedan utrotade han sju folk i Kanaan och gav deras land till israeliterna. 20 Allt det här tog ungefär 450 år. Efter det gav han dem domare fram till profeten Samuels tid.

21 Sedan bad folket om en kung och Gud gav dem Saul, Kishs son en man ur Benjamins stam. Han regerade i fyrtio år. 22 Men Gud avsatte honom och lät David bli kung över dem istället. Om honom vittnade Gud: ’Jag har funnit David, Jishajs son en man efter mitt hjärta. Han kommer att göra min vilja.’[c] 23 Från hans ättlingar har Gud kallat en räddare för Israel, Jesus.

24 Men innan Jesus trädde fram, förkunnade Johannes omvändelse och dop för hela Israels folk. 25 När Johannes uppgift närmade sig sitt slut, sa han: ’Jag är inte den som ni tror att jag är. Han kommer efter mig och jag är inte ens värdig att knyta upp hans sandalremmar.’[d]

26 Lyssa nu, mina syskon, ni ättlingar till Abraham och alla andra här som fruktar Gud! Budskapet om denna räddning har sänts till er. 27 Folket i Jerusalem och deras ledare insåg nämligen inte vem Jesus var. De dömde honom och fullbordade så vad som förutsagts genom profeterna som läses varje sabbat. 28 Trots att de inte kunde hitta något giltigt skäl att avrätta honom, bad de Pilatus att döda honom. 29 Och när de hade slutfört allt det som står skrivet om honom, tog de ner honom från korset och lade honom i en grav.

30 Men Gud uppväckte honom från de döda 31 och Jesus visade sig sedan under de följande dagarna för dem som hade följt med honom från Galileen till Jerusalem. Det är dessa som nu vittnar om det för Israels folk.

32 Vi förkunnar evangeliet, löftet till förfäderna 33 som Gud har fullföljt för oss genom att uppväcka Jesus från de döda, så som det står i den andra psalmen:

’Du är min Son. Idag har jag blivit din Far.’[e]

34 För Gud hade låtit honom uppstå från de döda, så att han aldrig mer skulle behöva komma tillbaka till förgängelsen. Det förklarade han med orden:

’Jag ska ge er den trofasta nåd som jag gav David.’[f]

35 Och på ett annat ställe säger han:

’Du ska inte låta din Helige förmultna.’[g]

36 David hade tjänat Guds vilja på sin tid, dog och blev begravd vid sina fäder och hans kropp förmultnade. 37 Men den som Gud uppväckte från de döda förmultnade inte.

38 Mina syskon, jag vill att ni ska veta att det är genom honom som syndernas förlåtelse förkunnas för er. 39 Var och en som tror blir genom honom rättfärdig och fri från allt det som ni inte kunde bli fria från genom Moses lag. 40 Se därför upp så att ni inte drabbas av det som sagts genom profeterna:

41 ’Se, ni föraktare.
    Låt er förvånas och förgås.
Jag ska utföra en gärning under er tid,
    något som ni inte kommer att tro
när man berättar det för er.[h]’ ”

42 När Paulus och Barnabas lämnade synagogan, bad folket dem att komma tillbaka nästa sabbat så att de kunde höra mer. 43 När man bröt upp efter samlingen, passade många judar och gudfruktiga proselyter också på att göra sällskap med Paulus och Barnabas som talade till dem och uppmanade dem att hålla sig till Guds nåd.

Paulus sprider budskapet om Jesus till andra än judarna

44 På sabbaten en vecka senare kom nästan hela staden för att höra budskapet från Herren. 45 Men när judarna såg allt folket, blev de avundsjuka och började förlöjliga det Paulus sa.

46 Men Paulus och Barnabas svarade dem utan att tveka: ”Ni skulle vara de första som fick höra Guds ord förkunnas, men eftersom ni avvisar det och gör er själva ovärdiga det eviga livet, så vänder vi oss nu till andra folk. 47 Det är också vad Herren har befallt oss:

’Jag har gjort dig till ett ljus för alla folk,
    för att du ska vara till räddning för hela jorden.[i]’ ”

48 När de som var från andra folk hörde detta, blev de mycket glada och prisade Herrens ord och alla som var utsedda till evigt liv började tro. 49 Sedan spreds budskapet om Herren i hela området.

50 Men judarna hetsade upp de högt uppsatta gudfruktiga kvinnorna och de ledande männen i staden och satte igång en förföljelse mot Paulus och Barnabas och drev bort dem från området. 51 Båda två skakade då dammet av sina fötter[j] och fortsatte till Ikonion. 52 Och lärjungarna fylldes av glädje och helig Ande.

Paul and Barnabas Are Sent to the Gentiles

13 Now (A)in the church that was at Antioch there were certain prophets and teachers: (B)Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, (C)Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. 2 As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, (D)“Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work (E)to which I have called them.” 3 Then, (F)having fasted and prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them away.

Preaching in Cyprus

4 So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to (G)Cyprus. 5 And when they arrived in Salamis, (H)they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. They also had (I)John as their assistant.

6 Now when they had gone through [a]the island to Paphos, they found (J)a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew whose name was Bar-Jesus, 7 who was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man. And immediately a dark mist fell on him, and he went around seeking someone to lead him by the hand. 12 Then the proconsul believed, when he saw what had been done, being astonished at the teaching of the Lord.

At Antioch in Pisidia

13 Now when Paul and his party set sail from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia; and (O)John, departing from them, returned to Jerusalem. 14 But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and (P)went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and sat down. 15 And (Q)after the reading of the Law and the Prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent to them, saying, “Men and brethren, if you have (R)any word of [c]exhortation for the people, say on.”

16 Then Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said, “Men of Israel, and (S)you who fear God, listen: 17 The God of this people [d]Israel (T)chose our fathers, and exalted the people (U)when they dwelt as strangers in the land of Egypt, and with [e]an uplifted arm He (V)brought them out of it. 18 Now (W)for a time of about forty years He put up with their ways in the wilderness. 19 And when He had destroyed (X)seven nations in the land of Canaan, (Y)He distributed their land to them by allotment.

20 “After that (Z)He gave them judges for about four hundred and fifty years, (AA)until Samuel the prophet. 21 (AB)And afterward they asked for a king; so God gave them (AC)Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. 22 And (AD)when He had removed him, (AE)He raised up for them David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said, (AF)‘I have found David the son of Jesse, (AG)a man after My own heart, who will do all My will.’ 23 (AH)From this man’s seed, according (AI)to the promise, God raised up for Israel (AJ)a[f] Savior—Jesus— 24 (AK)after John had first preached, before His coming, the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. 25 And as John was finishing his course, he said, (AL)‘Who do you think I am? I am not He. But behold, (AM)there comes One after me, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to loose.’

26 “Men and brethren, sons of the [g]family of Abraham, and (AN)those among you who fear God, (AO)to you the [h]word of this salvation has been sent. 27 For those who dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, (AP)because they did not know Him, nor even the voices of the Prophets which are read every Sabbath, have fulfilled them in condemning Him. 28 (AQ)And though they found no cause for death in Him, they asked Pilate that He should be put to death. 29 (AR)Now when they had fulfilled all that was written concerning Him, (AS)they took Him down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb. 30 (AT)But God raised Him from the dead. 31 (AU)He was seen for many days by those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are His witnesses to the people. 32 And we declare to you glad tidings—(AV)that promise which was made to the fathers. 33 God has fulfilled this for us their children, in that He has raised up Jesus. As it is also written in the second Psalm:

(AW)‘You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.’

34 And that He raised Him from the dead, no more to return to [i]corruption, He has spoken thus:

(AX)‘I will give you the sure [j]mercies of David.’

35 Therefore He also says in another Psalm:

(AY)‘You will not allow Your Holy One to see corruption.’

36 “For David, after he had served [k]his own generation by the will of God, (AZ)fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and [l]saw corruption; 37 but He whom God raised up [m]saw no corruption. 38 Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that (BA)through this Man is preached to you the forgiveness of sins; 39 and (BB)by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses. 40 Beware therefore, lest what has been spoken in the prophets come upon you:

41 ‘Behold,(BC) you despisers,
Marvel and perish!
For I work a work in your days,
A work which you will by no means believe,
Though one were to declare it to you.’ ”

Blessing and Conflict at Antioch

42 [n]So when the Jews went out of the synagogue, the Gentiles begged that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath. 43 Now when the congregation had broken up, many of the Jews and devout proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, (BD)persuaded them to continue in (BE)the grace of God.

44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the word of God. 45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy; and contradicting and blaspheming, they (BF)opposed the things spoken by Paul. 46 Then Paul and Barnabas grew bold and said, (BG)“It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first; but (BH)since you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, behold, (BI)we turn to the Gentiles. 47 For so the Lord has commanded us:

(BJ)‘I have set you as a light to the Gentiles,
That you should be for salvation to the ends of the earth.’ ”

48 Now when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord. (BK)And as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed.

49 And the word of the Lord was being spread throughout all the region. 50 But the Jews stirred up the devout and prominent women and the chief men of the city, (BL)raised up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region. 51 (BM)But they shook off the dust from their feet against them, and came to Iconium. 52 And the disciples (BN)were filled with joy and (BO)with the Holy Spirit.
