Trimiterea lui Barnabas şi a lui Saul

13 În biserica din Antiohia erau nişte profeţi şi învăţători: Barnabas, Simeon, numit şi Niger[a], Lucius din Cirena, Manaen – care fusese crescut împreună cu tetrarhul Irod – şi Saul. În timp ce slujeau ei Domnului şi posteau, Duhul Sfânt le-a zis: „Puneţi-Mi deoparte pe Barnabas şi pe Saul pentru lucrarea la care i-am chemat!“ Atunci, după ce au postit şi s-au rugat, şi-au pus mâinile peste ei şi i-au lăsat să plece.

În Cipru

Aşadar, fiind trimişi de Duhul Sfânt, ei s-au dus în Seleucia, iar de acolo au plecat pe mare spre Cipru. Când au ajuns la Salamis, au predicat Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu în sinagogile iudeilor. Îl aveau cu ei pe Ioan, ca ajutor. Au traversat toată insula până la Pafos, iar acolo au întâlnit un vrăjitor, profet mincinos, un iudeu pe nume Bar-Isus, care era cu proconsulul[b] Sergius Paulus, un om inteligent. Proconsulul i-a chemat la el pe Barnabas şi pe Saul, căutând să asculte Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu, însă Elima, vrăjitorul, căci aşa se traduce numele lui, li se opunea şi căuta să-l îndepărteze pe proconsul de la credinţă. Dar Saul, numit şi Pavel[c], fiind plin de Duhul Sfânt, s-a uitat ţintă la el 10 şi i-a zis: „Om plin de toată viclenia şi de toată înşelăciunea, fiu al diavolului, duşman a tot ceea ce este drept, nu vei înceta să suceşti căile drepte ale Domnului? 11 Acum iată, mâna Domnului este împotriva ta: vei fi orb şi nu vei mai vedea soarele până la o vreme!“ Şi deodată a căzut peste el ceaţă şi întuneric şi a început să umble bâjbâind prin jur, căutând pe cineva care să-l ducă de mână. 12 Atunci, văzând ce se întâmplase, proconsulul a crezut, fiind uluit de învăţătura Domnului.

În Antiohia Pisidiei

13 Pavel şi cei ce erau cu el au plecat din Pafos pe mare şi s-au dus la Perga, în Pamfilia. Ioan însă s-a despărţit de ei şi s-a întors în Ierusalim. 14 Dar ei au plecat mai departe din Perga şi au ajuns în Antiohia din Pisidia. În ziua de Sabat au intrat în sinagogă şi s-au aşezat. 15 După citirea Legii şi a Profeţilor, conducătorii sinagogii au trimis să le spună: „Fraţilor, dacă aveţi vreun cuvânt de încurajare pentru popor, vorbiţi!“ 16 Pavel s-a ridicat, a făcut semn cu mâna şi a zis:

„Bărbaţi israeliţi şi voi care vă temeţi de Dumnezeu[d], ascultaţi! 17 Dumnezeul acestui popor Israel i-a ales pe strămoşii noştri; El l-a înălţat în cinste pe poporul acesta în timpul peregrinării lui în ţara Egiptului şi l-a scos de acolo cu braţul Său puternic. 18 Apoi, timp de aproape patruzeci de ani, i-a suportat[e] în pustie. 19 Şi, după ce a distrus şapte neamuri în ţara Canaanului, le-a dat drept moştenire ţara acestora. 20 Perioada aceasta[f] s-a întins pe aproape patru sute cincizeci de ani. După aceea le-a dat judecători[g], până la profetul Samuel. 21 Atunci ei au cerut un rege. Şi Dumnezeu le-a dat timp de patruzeci de ani pe Saul, fiul lui Chiş, din seminţia lui Beniamin. 22 Apoi l-a înlăturat pe Saul şi li l-a ridicat ca rege pe David, despre care a mărturisit: «L-am găsit pe David, fiul lui Iese, ca fiind un om după inima Mea şi care va împlini toate planurile Mele.»[h] 23 Dintre urmaşii acestuia, Dumnezeu, după promisiunea Sa, a adus lui Israel un Mântuitor, pe Isus. 24 Înainte de venirea lui Isus, Ioan predicase botezul pocăinţei la tot poporul Israel. 25 Când Ioan era pe cale de a-şi împlini misiunea, zicea: «Cine presupuneţi că sunt eu? Nu eu sunt Acela; ci iată, după mine vine Cel Căruia eu nu sunt vrednic să-I dezleg sandalele din picioare!»

26 Fraţilor, fii ai neamului lui Avraam, şi voi, care vă temeţi de Dumnezeu, nouă ne-a fost trimis cuvântul acestei mântuiri! 27 Însă locuitorii Ierusalimului şi conducătorii lor nu L-au recunoscut pe Isus şi, prin faptul că L-au condamnat, au împlinit cuvintele din Profeţi, care sunt citite în fiecare zi de Sabat. 28 Şi, măcar că nu au găsit nici un motiv de condamnare la moarte, ei i-au cerut lui Pilat să-L omoare. 29 După ce au împlinit tot ce a fost scris cu privire la El, L-au dat jos de pe lemn şi L-au pus într-un mormânt. 30 Dar Dumnezeu L-a înviat dintre cei morţi; 31 El S-a arătat timp de mai multe zile celor ce veniseră cu el din Galileea în Ierusalim şi care acum sunt martorii Lui în faţa poporului. 32 Aşadar, noi vă aducem această veste bună că, promisiunea făcută strămoşilor noştri, 33 Dumnezeu a împlinit-o pentru noi, copiii lor, înviindu-L pe Isus, aşa cum este scris în Psalmul al doilea:

«Tu eşti Fiul Meu!
    Astăzi Te-am născut!»[i]

34 Că L-a înviat dintre cei morţi, aşa că nu urmează să Se mai întoarcă în putrezire, a spus-o când a zis:

«Vă voi da promisiunile sfinte şi demne de încredere făcute lui David.»[j]

35 De aceea mai zice şi în alt psalm:

«Nu vei îngădui ca Sfântul Tău[k] să vadă putrezirea.»[l]

36 Însă David, după ce a slujit scopului lui Dumnezeu în generaţia sa, a adormit, a fost adăugat la strămoşii săi şi a văzut putrezirea! 37 Dar Cel pe Care L-a înviat Dumnezeu n-a văzut putrezirea! 38 Să vă fie deci cunoscut, fraţilor, că prin El vi se vesteşte iertarea păcatelor; şi, de toate păcatele de care nu aţi putut fi îndreptăţiţi prin Legea lui Moise, 39 este îndreptăţit oricine crede în El. 40 Vedeţi deci ca nu cumva să vi se întâmple ceea ce s-a spus în Profeţi:

41 «Uitaţi-vă, dispreţuitorilor,
    miraţi-vă şi pieriţi!
Căci în zilele voastre am să fac o lucrare
    pe care n-aţi crede-o
        dacă v-ar povesti-o cineva!»“[m]

42 În timp ce ieşeau, Barnabas şi Saul au fost rugaţi să vorbească despre aceste lucruri şi în Sabatul următor. 43 După ce s-a dat drumul adunării din sinagogă, mulţi iudei şi prozeliţi devotaţi i-au urmat pe Pavel şi Barnabas, care stăteau de vorbă cu ei, încurajându-i să rămână în harul lui Dumnezeu.

44 În Sabatul următor, aproape toată cetatea s-a adunat ca să audă Cuvântul Domnului. 45 Dar iudeii, când au văzut mulţimile, s-au umplut de invidie. Ei vorbeau împotriva celor spuse de Pavel şi-l insultau. 46 Barnabas şi Pavel însă au vorbit cu îndrăzneală şi au zis: „Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu trebuia să vă fie spus mai întâi vouă, dar, fiindcă voi îl respingeţi şi vă judecaţi astfel ca fiind nedemni de viaţa veşnică, iată că ne întoarcem spre neamuri. 47 Căci aşa ne-a poruncit Domnul:

«Te-am pus să fii o lumină pentru neamuri,
    ca să duci mântuirea până la marginile pământului!»“[n]

48 Neamurile s-au bucurat când au auzit lucrul acesta şi au lăudat Cuvântul Domnului. Şi toţi cei ce erau desemnaţi pentru viaţă veşnică au crezut. 49 Cuvântul Domnului se răspândea prin toată regiunea. 50 Dar iudeii le-au incitat pe femeile devotate, care aveau influenţă, şi pe fruntaşii cetăţii, au stârnit o persecuţie împotriva lui Pavel şi a lui Barnabas şi i-au alungat din ţinuturile lor. 51 Pavel şi Barnabas şi-au scuturat praful de pe picioare împotriva lor şi s-au dus în Iconia. 52 Ucenicii erau plini de bucurie şi de Duhul Sfânt.

Barnabas and Saul Sent Out from Antioch

13 Now there were prophets and teachers in Antioch in the church that was there: Barnabas, and Simeon (who was called Niger), and Lucius the Cyrenian, and Manaen (a close friend of Herod the tetrarch), and Saul. And while[a] they were serving the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart now for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Then, after they[b] had fasted and prayed and placed their[c] hands on them, they sent them[d] away.

Confronting a Magician on Cyprus

Therefore, sent out by the Holy Spirit, they came down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed away to Cyprus. And when they[e] came to Salamis, they began to proclaim the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. And they also had John as assistant. And when they[f] had crossed over the whole island as far as Paphos, they found a certain man, a magician, a Jewish false prophet whose name was Bar-Jesus, who was with the proconsul Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man. This man summoned Barnabas and Saul and[g] wished to hear the word of God. But Elymas the magician (for his name is translated in this way) opposed them, attempting to turn the proconsul away from the faith. But Saul (also called Paul), filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him 10 and[h] said, “O you who are full of all deceit and of all unscrupulousness, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness! Will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord! 11 And now behold, the hand of the Lord is against you, and you will be blind, not seeing the sun for a while.[i] And immediately mist and darkness fell over him, and he was going around looking for people[j] to lead him[k] by the hand. 12 Then when[l] the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, because he[m] was astounded at the teaching about[n] the Lord.

Preaching in the Synagogue at Pisidian Antioch

13 Now Paul and his companions[o] put out to sea from Paphos and[p] came to Perga in Pamphylia, but John departed from them and[q] returned to Jerusalem. 14 And they went on from Perga and[r] arrived at Pisidian Antioch. And they entered into the synagogue on the day of the Sabbath and[s] sat down. 15 So after the reading from the law and the prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent word[t] to them, saying, “Men and brothers, if there is any message of exhortation by you for the people, say it.”[u]

16 So Paul stood up,[v] and motioning with his[w] hand, he said, “Israelite men, and those who fear God, listen! 17 The God of this people Israel chose our fathers and exalted the people during their[x] stay in the land of Egypt, and with uplifted arm he led them out of it. 18 And for a period of time of about forty years, he put up with them in the wilderness. 19 And after[y] destroying seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave their land to his people[z] as an inheritance. 20 This took[aa] about four hundred and fifty years. And after these things, he gave them[ab] judges until Samuel the prophet. 21 And then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man from the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. 22 And after[ac] removing him, he raised up David for their king, about whom he also said, testifying, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse to be a man in accordance with my heart, who will carry out all my will.’[ad] 23 From the descendants of this man, according to his promise, God brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus. 24 Before his coming[ae] John had publicly proclaimed[af] a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. 25 But while John was completing his[ag] mission, he said, ‘What do you suppose me to be? ‘You are my Son;

‘You will not permit your Holy One to experience decay.’[aw]

36 For David, after[ax] serving the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep and was buried with[ay] his fathers, and experienced decay. 37 But he whom God raised up did not experience decay.

38 “Therefore let it be known to you, men and brothers, that through this one forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, and from all the things from which you were not able to be justified by the law of Moses, 39 by this one everyone who believes is justified! 40 Watch out, therefore, lest what is stated by the prophets come upon you:[az]

41 ‘Look, you scoffers,
    and be astonished and perish!
    For I am doing a work in your days,
    a work that you would never believe
        even if someone were to tell it[ba] to you.’”[bb]

Response to the Message in Pisidian Antioch

42 And as[bc] they were going out, they began urging[bd] that these things be spoken about to them on the next Sabbath. 43 And after[be] the synagogue had broken up, many of the Jews and the devout[bf] proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who were speaking to them and[bg] were persuading them to continue in the grace of God. 44 And on the coming Sabbath, nearly the whole city came together to hear the word of the Lord. 45 But when[bh] the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy, and began contradicting what was being said by Paul by[bi] reviling him.[bj] 46 Both Paul and Barnabas spoke boldly and[bk] said, “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken first to you, since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life! Behold, we are turning to the Gentiles! 47 For so the Lord has commanded us:

‘I have appointed you to be[bl] a light for the Gentiles,
    that you would bring[bm] salvation to the end of the earth.’[bn]

48 And when[bo] the Gentiles heard this,[bp] they began to rejoice[bq] and to glorify the word of the Lord. And all those who were designated for eternal life believed. 49 So the word of the Lord was carried through the whole region. 50 But the Jews incited the devout women of high social standing and the most prominent men of the city, and stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas and threw them out of their district. 51 So after[br] shaking off the dust from their feet against them, they went to Iconium. 52 And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

And immediately a dark mist fell on him, and he went around seeking someone to lead him by the hand. 12 Then the proconsul believed, when he saw what had been done, being astonished at the teaching of the Lord.

At Antioch in Pisidia

13 Now when Paul and his party set sail from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia; and (O)John, departing from them, returned to Jerusalem. 14 But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and (P)went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and sat down. 15 And (Q)after the reading of the Law and the Prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent to them, saying, “Men and brethren, if you have (R)any word of [c]exhortation for the people, say on.”

16 Then Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said, “Men of Israel, and (S)you who fear God, listen: 17 The God of this people [d]Israel (T)chose our fathers, and exalted the people (U)when they dwelt as strangers in the land of Egypt, and with [e]an uplifted arm He (V)brought them out of it. 18 Now (W)for a time of about forty years He put up with their ways in the wilderness. 19 And when He had destroyed (X)seven nations in the land of Canaan, (Y)He distributed their land to them by allotment.

20 “After that (Z)He gave them judges for about four hundred and fifty years, (AA)until Samuel the prophet. 21 (AB)And afterward they asked for a king; so God gave them (AC)Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. 22 And (AD)when He had removed him, (AE)He raised up for them David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said, (AF)‘I have found David the son of Jesse, (AG)a man after My own heart, who will do all My will.’ 23 (AH)From this man’s seed, according (AI)to the promise, God raised up for Israel (AJ)a[f] Savior—Jesus— 24 (AK)after John had first preached, before His coming, the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. 25 And as John was finishing his course, he said, (AL)‘Who do you think I am? I am not He. But behold, (AM)there comes One after me, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to loose.’

26 “Men and brethren, sons of the [g]family of Abraham, and (AN)those among you who fear God, (AO)to you the [h]word of this salvation has been sent. 27 For those who dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, (AP)because they did not know Him, nor even the voices of the Prophets which are read every Sabbath, have fulfilled them in condemning Him. 28 (AQ)And though they found no cause for death in Him, they asked Pilate that He should be put to death. 29 (AR)Now when they had fulfilled all that was written concerning Him, (AS)they took Him down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb. 30 (AT)But God raised Him from the dead. 31 (AU)He was seen for many days by those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are His witnesses to the people. 32 And we declare to you glad tidings—(AV)that promise which was made to the fathers. 33 God has fulfilled this for us their children, in that He has raised up Jesus. As it is also written in the second Psalm:

(AW)‘You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.’

34 And that He raised Him from the dead, no more to return to [i]corruption, He has spoken thus:

(AX)‘I will give you the sure [j]mercies of David.’

35 Therefore He also says in another Psalm:

(AY)‘You will not allow Your Holy One to see corruption.’

36 “For David, after he had served [k]his own generation by the will of God, (AZ)fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and [l]saw corruption; 37 but He whom God raised up [m]saw no corruption. 38 Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that (BA)through this Man is preached to you the forgiveness of sins; 39 and (BB)by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses. 40 Beware therefore, lest what has been spoken in the prophets come upon you:

41 ‘Behold,(BC) you despisers,
Marvel and perish!
For I work a work in your days,
A work which you will by no means believe,
Though one were to declare it to you.’

Blessing and Conflict at Antioch

42 [n]So when the Jews went out of the synagogue, the Gentiles begged that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath. 43 Now when the congregation had broken up, many of the Jews and devout proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, (BD)persuaded them to continue in (BE)the grace of God.

44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the word of God. 45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy; and contradicting and blaspheming, they (BF)opposed the things spoken by Paul. 46 Then Paul and Barnabas grew bold and said, (BG)“It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first; but (BH)since you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, behold, (BI)we turn to the Gentiles. 47 For so the Lord has commanded us:

(BJ)‘I have set you as a light to the Gentiles,
That you should be for salvation to the ends of the earth.’

48 Now when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord. (BK)And as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed.

49 And the word of the Lord was being spread throughout all the region. 50 But the Jews stirred up the devout and prominent women and the chief men of the city, (BL)raised up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region. 51 (BM)But they shook off the dust from their feet against them, and came to Iconium. 52 And the disciples (BN)were filled with joy and (BO)with the Holy Spirit.
