13 In the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers. Among them were Barnabas, Simeon, and Lucius from Cyrene. Simeon was also called Niger. Another was Manaen. He had been brought up with Herod, the ruler of Galilee. Saul was among them too. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit spoke. “Set apart Barnabas and Saul for me,” he said. “I have appointed them to do special work.” The prophets and teachers fasted and prayed. They placed their hands on Barnabas and Saul. Then they sent them off.

Events on Cyprus

Barnabas and Saul were sent on their way by the Holy Spirit. They went down to Seleucia. From there they sailed to Cyprus. They arrived at Salamis. There they preached God’s word in the Jewish synagogues. John was with them as their helper.

They traveled all across the island until they came to Paphos. There they met a Jew named Bar-Jesus. He was an evil magician and a false prophet. He was an attendant of Sergius Paulus, the governor. Paulus was a man of understanding. He sent for Barnabas and Saul. He wanted to hear God’s word. But the evil magician named Elymas opposed them. The name Elymas means Magician. He tried to keep the governor from becoming a believer. Saul was also known as Paul. He was filled with the Holy Spirit. He looked straight at Elymas. He said to him, 10 “You are a child of the devil! You are an enemy of everything that is right! You cheat people. You use all kinds of tricks. Won’t you ever stop twisting the right ways of the Lord? 11 Now the Lord’s hand is against you. You are going to go blind. For a while you won’t even be able to see the light of the sun.”

Right away mist and darkness came over him. He tried to feel his way around. He wanted to find someone to lead him by the hand. 12 When the governor saw what had happened, he believed. He was amazed at what Paul was teaching about the Lord.

Paul Preaches in Pisidian Antioch

13 From Paphos, Paul and his companions sailed to Perga in Pamphylia. There John Mark left them and returned to Jerusalem. 14 From Perga they went on to Pisidian Antioch. On the Sabbath day they entered the synagogue and sat down. 15 The Law and the Prophets were read aloud. Then the leaders of the synagogue sent word to Paul and his companions. They said, “Brothers, do you have any words of instruction for the people? If you do, please speak.”

16 Paul stood up and motioned with his hand. Then he said, “Fellow Israelites, and you Gentiles who worship God, listen to me! 17 The God of Israel chose our people who lived long ago. He blessed them greatly while they were in Egypt. With his mighty power he led them out of that country. 18 He put up with their behavior for about 40 years in the desert. 19 And he destroyed seven nations in Canaan. Then he gave the land to his people as their rightful share. 20 All this took about 450 years.

“After this, God gave them judges until the time of Samuel the prophet. 21 Then the people asked for a king. He gave them Saul, son of Kish. Saul was from the tribe of Benjamin. He ruled for 40 years. 22 God removed him and made David their king. Here is God’s witness about him. ‘David, son of Jesse, is a man dear to my heart,’ he said. ‘David will do everything I want him to do.’

23 “From this man’s family line God has brought to Israel the Savior Jesus. This is what he had promised. 24 Before Jesus came, John preached that we should turn away from our sins and be baptized. He preached this to all Israel. 25 John was coming to the end of his work. ‘Who do you suppose I am?’ he said. ‘I am not the one you are looking for. But there is someone coming after me. I am not good enough to untie his sandals.’

26 “Listen, fellow children of Abraham! Listen, you Gentiles who worship God! This message of salvation has been sent to us. 27 The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus. By finding him guilty, they made the prophets’ words come true. These are read every Sabbath day. 28 The people and their rulers had no reason at all for sentencing Jesus to death. But they asked Pilate to have him killed. 29 They did everything that had been written about Jesus. Then they took him down from the cross. They laid him in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from the dead. 31 For many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. Now they are telling our people about Jesus.

32 “We are telling you the good news. What God promised our people long ago 33 he has done for us, their children. He has raised up Jesus. This is what is written in the second Psalm. It says,

“ ‘You are my son.
    Today I have become your father.’ (Psalm 2:7)

34 God raised Jesus from the dead. He will never rot in the grave. As God has said,

“ ‘Holy and sure blessings were promised to David.
    I will give them to you.’ (Isaiah 55:3)

35 In another place it also says,

“ ‘You will not let your holy one rot away.’ (Psalm 16:10)

36 “David carried out God’s purpose while he lived. Then he died. He was buried with his people. His body rotted away. 37 But the one whom God raised from the dead did not rot away.

38 “My friends, here is what I want you to know. I announce to you that your sins can be forgiven because of what Jesus has done. 39 Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin. Moses’ law could not make you right in God’s eyes. 40 Be careful! Don’t let what the prophets spoke about happen to you. They said,

41 “ ‘Look, you who make fun of the truth!
    Wonder and die!
I am going to do something in your days
    that you would never believe.
    You wouldn’t believe it even if someone told you.’ ” (Habakkuk 1:5)

42 Paul and Barnabas started to leave the synagogue. The people invited them to say more about these things on the next Sabbath day. 43 The people were told they could leave the service. Many Jews followed Paul and Barnabas. Many Gentiles who faithfully worshiped the God of the Jews did the same. Paul and Barnabas talked with them. They tried to get them to keep living in God’s grace.

44 On the next Sabbath day, almost the whole city gathered. They gathered to hear the word of the Lord. 45 When the Jews saw the crowds, they became very jealous. They began to disagree with what Paul was saying. They said evil things against him.

46 Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly. “We had to speak God’s word to you first,” they said. “But you don’t accept it. You don’t think you are good enough for eternal life. So now we are turning to the Gentiles. 47 This is what the Lord has commanded us to do. He said,

“ ‘I have made you a light for the Gentiles.
    You will bring salvation to the whole earth.’ ” (Isaiah 49:6)

48 When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad. They honored the word of the Lord. All who were appointed for eternal life believed.

49 The word of the Lord spread through the whole area. 50 But the Jewish leaders stirred up the important women who worshiped God. They also stirred up the men who were leaders in the city. The Jewish leaders tried to get the women and men to attack Paul and Barnabas. They threw Paul and Barnabas out of that area. 51 Paul and Barnabas shook the dust off their feet. This was a warning to the people who had opposed them. Then Paul and Barnabas went on to Iconium. 52 The believers were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

13 Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.

As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.

And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.

So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus.

And when they were at Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews: and they had also John to their minister.

And when they had gone through the isle unto Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Barjesus:

Which was with the deputy of the country, Sergius Paulus, a prudent man; who called for Barnabas and Saul, and desired to hear the word of God.

But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith.

Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him.

10 And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?

11 And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand.

12 Then the deputy, when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the doctrine of the Lord.

13 Now when Paul and his company loosed from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia: and John departing from them returned to Jerusalem.

14 But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down.

15 And after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, Ye men and brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people, say on.

16 Then Paul stood up, and beckoning with his hand said, Men of Israel, and ye that fear God, give audience.

17 The God of this people of Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they dwelt as strangers in the land of Egypt, and with an high arm brought he them out of it.

18 And about the time of forty years suffered he their manners in the wilderness.

19 And when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Chanaan, he divided their land to them by lot.

20 And after that he gave unto them judges about the space of four hundred and fifty years, until Samuel the prophet.

21 And afterward they desired a king: and God gave unto them Saul the son of Cis, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, by the space of forty years.

22 And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave their testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.

23 Of this man's seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus:

24 When John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.

25 And as John fulfilled his course, he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not he. But, behold, there cometh one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose.

26 Men and brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this salvation sent.

27 For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him.

28 And though they found no cause of death in him, yet desired they Pilate that he should be slain.

29 And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulchre.

30 But God raised him from the dead:

31 And he was seen many days of them which came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses unto the people.

32 And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers,

33 God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.

34 And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David.

35 Wherefore he saith also in another psalm, Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

36 For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption:

37 But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption.

38 Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins:

39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.

40 Beware therefore, lest that come upon you, which is spoken of in the prophets;

41 Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish: for I work a work in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you.

42 And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath.

43 Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.

44 And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.

45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming.

46 Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.

47 For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.

48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.

49 And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region.

50 But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts.

51 But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium.

52 And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.

Saul og Barnabas bliver udsendt på deres første missionsrejse

13 I menigheden i Antiokia var der en række profeter og lærere. Der var Barnabas, Simeon Niger, Lukius fra Kyrene, samt Manaen, der var opvokset sammen med Herodes Antipas, og endelig var der Saul. En dag, da menigheden holdt gudstjeneste og fastede, sagde Helligånden: „Udtag Barnabas og Saul til den opgave, som jeg har udvalgt dem til!” Menigheden fortsatte derefter i bøn og faste, og de lagde hænderne på dem for at sende dem af sted med Guds velsignelse.

Første stop: Cypern

Efter at Barnabas og Saul på den måde var udsendt af Helligånden, tog de ned til Seleukia, hvorfra de sejlede til Cypern. Da skibet lagde til i den østlige havneby Salamis, gik de fra borde og opsøgte øens jødiske synagoger, hvor de forkyndte Guds ord. De havde taget Johannes Markus med på rejsen som deres hjælper. De vandrede tværs over øen, indtil de kom til den vestlige havneby Pafos. Her traf de en jødisk troldmand og falsk profet, der hed Bar-Jesus. Han holdt til hos guvernøren, Sergius Paulus, som for øvrigt var en begavet mand. Guvernøren inviterede Barnabas og Saul på besøg, for han ville gerne høre Guds ord. Men Bar-Jesus, der også var kendt som Elimas,[a] modarbejdede dem og prøvede at forhindre guvernøren i at komme til tro. Saul, som også kaldes Paulus, blev da fyldt med Helligåndens kraft. Han så fast på Elimas og sagde: 10 „Du er et Djævelens barn, fuld af løgn og bedrag, modstander af alt, hvad der er ret og rigtigt. Hvornår vil du holde op med at modarbejde Herrens planer? 11 Nu vil Herren straffe dig ved at gøre dig blind for en tid!” I det samme blev alt mørkt omkring ham, så han begyndte at famle rundt for at finde en, der kunne lede ham ved hånden. 12 Da guvernøren så det mirakel, kom han til tro, så forbløffet var han over den kraft, der fulgte med budskabet om Herren.

Videre til Antiokia i Pisidien

13 Paulus og hans ledsagere sejlede derefter ud fra Pafos og ankom til havnebyen Perge i provinsen Pamfylien i Lilleasien. Her forlod Johannes Markus dem og vendte tilbage til Jerusalem. 14 Men Barnabas og Paulus fortsatte til fods ind i landet til Antiokia i provinsen Pisidien. På sabbatten gik de ind i synagogen og satte sig. 15 Efter den foreskrevne oplæsning fra Toraen og Profetbøgerne sendte synagogens ledere en besked over til dem: „Venner, hvis I har et opmuntrende ord til folket, så sig frem!”

16 Paulus rejste sig, løftede hånden for at få ro og sagde så: „Israelitter og gudfrygtige grækere, hør, hvad jeg har at sige! 17 Israels Gud udvalgte vores stamfædre, og han gjorde folket talrigt, da de levede som fremmede i Egypten. Derefter førte han dem ud af Egypten med stor kraft, 18 og han viste stor tålmodighed over for dem under de 40 års ørkenvandring. 19-20 Han udryddede syv folkeslag i Kana’an og hjalp vores forfædre til at indtage hele det lovede land i løbet af ca. 450 år. Derefter gav han dem en række dommere til at lede landet indtil profeten Samuel. 21-22 Men så tiggede folket om at få en konge, og Gud gav dem Saul, en søn af Kish fra Benjamins stamme. Han regerede i 40 år, indtil Gud fjernede ham og i stedet gav dem David til konge. Om ham har Gud sagt: ‚David, Isajs søn, er en mand, jeg kan stole på. Han vil gøre min vilje i alle ting.’[b] 23 Af Davids slægt har Gud nu udvalgt og sendt en frelser til Israels folk, sådan som han lovede, og det er Jesus.[c]

24 Men før Jesus begyndte sit virke, forkyndte Johannes Døber for hele Israels folk, at de skulle vende om fra deres synder og lade sig døbe. 25 Da Johannes var ved at have afsluttet sin gerning, sagde han til folket: ‚Jeg er ikke den Messias, I venter på. Men han kommer snart, og jeg er ikke engang værdig til at løse remmen på hans sandaler.’

26 Hør, venner, budskabet om frelse gælder både jer, som er Abrahams fysiske efterkommere, og jer grækere, som har ærefrygt for Gud. 27 Jerusalems indbyggere og de jødiske ledere tog ikke imod Frelseren. De accepterede ham ikke som Messias, men dømte ham til døden og opfyldte derved profeternes ord, som bliver oplæst sabbat efter sabbat. 28 Selv om de ikke kunne finde nogen gyldig grund til at dømme ham til døden, fik de alligevel Pilatus til at slå ham ihjel. 29 Da alle disse profetier således var gået i opfyldelse, blev han taget ned fra korset og lagt i en gravhule. 30 Men Gud oprejste ham fra de døde, 31 og i dagene derefter viste han sig flere gange for dem, der havde fulgt ham fra Galilæa til Jerusalem. De vidner nu offentligt om, hvad de har set.

32-33 Vi står her i dag for at fortælle jer det glædelige budskab: Guds løfte til forfædrene er nu gået i opfyldelse for deres efterkommere. Det skete ved, at han sendte os Jesus som den lovede Profet.[d] Det står også omtalt i Salme 2: ‚Du er min Søn, i dag er jeg blevet din Far.’[e]

34 Men det, at Jesus skulle opstå fra de døde, og at hans krop ikke skulle gå i forrådnelse, er antydet blandt andet i følgende skriftsted: ‚Jeg vil give jer de hellige, troværdige løfter, jeg gav David.’[f]

35 Løftet forklares ud fra en anden salme, hvor der står: ‚Du vil ikke lade din hengivne tjener gå i forrådnelse.’[g]

36 Der er ikke tale om David her, for efter at han havde tjent sin egen samtid ved at udføre Guds planer, døde han og blev begravet, og han er gået i forrådnelse. 37 Men der er tale om den hellige Tjener, som Gud nu har oprejst fra de døde. Hans krop er jo ikke gået i forrådnelse.

38-39 I skal vide, kære venner, at det er gennem Jesus, det er blevet muligt at få tilgivelse for sine synder. Det er ved at tro på ham, at enhver kan opnå Guds accept, noget som I aldrig kan opnå ved at forsøge at overholde de jødiske love og regler.[h]

40 Men pas på, for hvis I ikke tager imod budskabet i tro, så går det jer, som der står et sted i de profetiske bøger: 41 ‚Luk øjnene op, I vantro mennesker! I vil blive stumme af undren og gå til grunde! For jeg gør noget i jeres samtid, som I ikke vil tro på, når I får det fortalt.’[i]

42 Da mødet i synagogen var forbi, var der mange, som bad Paulus og Barnabas om at komme igen den følgende sabbat for at fortælle mere. 43 En del jøder og grækere fra synagogen kom til tro på Jesus, og de fulgte med Paulus og Barnabas, som talte videre med dem og opmuntrede dem til at holde fast ved Guds nåde.

44 Ugen efter var næsten hele byen stuvet sammen i synagogen for at høre dem forkynde om Herren. 45 Da de jødiske ledere så det vældige opbud af mennesker, blev de jaloux og begyndte hånende at modsige alt, hvad Paulus sagde. 46 Paulus og Barnabas lod sig dog ikke kue, men sagde: „Vi var nødt til først at bringe budskabet fra Gud til jer, som er jøder. Men når I afviser det og ikke regner jer selv for værdige til at få del i det evige liv, ja, så vender vi os til dem, der ikke er jøder. 47 Herren har nemlig givet os følgende befaling: ‚Jeg har sat dig som et lys for folkeslagene, så du kan bringe min frelse til jordens fjerneste egne.’[j]

48 Da grækerne hørte det, blev de jublende glade og lovpriste Herren for det budskab, og alle, som var beredt til at opnå det evige liv, kom til tro. 49 Det var begyndelsen til, at Herrens ord blev kendt på hele den egn.

50 Nu fik de jødiske ledere ophidset de fornemme græske kvinder, som var gået over til jødedommen, samt byens ledende mænd. Det lykkedes dem at oppiske en så kraftig stemning imod Paulus og Barnabas, at de blev jaget ud af byen.

51 De to apostle rystede byens støv af deres fødder som et tegn på, at de overlod dem til deres egen skæbne, og rejste så videre til Ikonion. 52 Men disciplene i byen blev fyldt med glæde og med Helligåndens kraft.
