¹⁵ After the reading from the Law^(A) and the Prophets, the leaders of the synagogue sent word to them, saying, “Brothers, if you have a word of exhortation for the people, please speak.”

⁸ if it is to encourage, then give encouragement;^(A) if it is giving, then give generously;^(B) if it is to lead,^[a] do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

³ But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening,^(A) encouraging^(B) and comfort.

³ For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives,^(A) nor are we trying to trick you.^(B)

¹³ Until I come,^(A) devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture,^(B) to preaching and to teaching.

⁵ And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,

²² Brothers and sisters, I urge you to bear with my word of exhortation, for in fact I have written to you quite briefly.^(A)

¹⁷ For Titus not only welcomed our appeal, but he is coming to you with much enthusiasm and on his own initiative.^(A)
