James Killed and Peter Imprisoned

12 About that time Herod the king laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church. He killed (A)James the brother of John (B)with the sword, and when he saw (C)that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. This was during (D)the days of Unleavened Bread. And when he had seized him, he put him (E)in prison, delivering him over to four (F)squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after the Passover to bring him out to the people. So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest (G)prayer for him was made to God by the church.

An Angel Frees Peter from Prison

12 About that time, Herod arrested some people who belonged to the church and mistreated them. He even had James, the brother of John, killed with a sword. When he saw how this was agreeable to the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter, too. This happened during the Festival of Unleavened Bread. When he arrested Peter, Herod[a] put him in prison and turned him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, planning to bring him out to the people after Passover season.[b] So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest prayer to God for him was being offered by the assembly.[c]
