⁴ While staying^[a] with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem but to wait there for the promise of the Father. “This,” he said, “is what you have heard from me;^(A)

⁴⁹ And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised, so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”^(A)

¹⁶ And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate,^[a] to be with you forever.^(A)

²⁶ “When the Advocate^[a] comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf.^(A)

³³ Being therefore exalted at^[a] the right hand of God and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you see and hear.^(A)

²² When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.

³⁹ Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive, for as yet there was no Spirit^[a] because Jesus was not yet glorified.^(A)

¹² for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that very hour what you ought to say.”

⁷ Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate^[a] will not come to you, but if I go, I will send him to you. ⁸ And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about^[b] sin and righteousness and judgment: ⁹ about sin, because they do not believe in me; ¹⁰ about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, and you will see me no longer; ¹¹ about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.^(A)

¹² “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.^{(B) 13} When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.^{(C) 14} He will glorify me because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. ¹⁵ All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.^(D)

²⁶ But the Advocate,^[a] the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I have said to you.^{(A) 27} Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.^{(B) 28} You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I am coming to you.’ If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I.^(C)
