Now a man named Simon had previously been practicing (A)magic in the city and astonishing the people of Samaria, (B)claiming to be someone great; 10 and all the people, from small to great, were paying attention to him, saying, “(C)This man is the Power of God that is called Great.” 11 And they were paying attention to him because for a long time he had astounded them with his (D)magic arts. 12 But when they believed Philip (E)as he was preaching the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were being (F)baptized. 13 Now even Simon himself believed; and after being baptized, he continued on with Philip, and as he observed (G)signs and (H)great miracles taking place, he was repeatedly amazed.

He was practicing occult arts and thrilling the people of Samaria, claiming to be someone great. 10 Everyone from the least to the greatest paid close attention to him, saying, “This is what we call[a] the great power of God!” 11 They paid careful attention to him because he had thrilled them for a long time with his occult performances. 12 But when Philip proclaimed the good news about the kingdom of God and about the name of Jesus the Messiah,[b] men and women believed and were baptized. 13 Even Simon believed, and after he was baptized he became devoted to Philip. He was amazed to see the signs and great miracles that were happening.

Simon the Sorcerer

He boasted that he was someone great,(B) 10 and all the people, both high and low, gave him their attention and exclaimed, “This man is rightly called the Great Power of God.”(C) 11 They followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his sorcery. 12 But when they believed Philip as he proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of God(D) and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized,(E) both men and women. 13 Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles(F) he saw.
