Choosing of the Seven

Now [a]at this time, as the (A)disciples were (B)increasing in number, a complaint developed on the part of the [b](C)Hellenistic Jews against the native (D)Hebrews, because their (E)widows were being overlooked in (F)the daily serving of food. So the twelve summoned the [c]congregation of the disciples and said, “It is not desirable for us to neglect the word of God in order to serve tables. Instead, (G)brothers and sisters, select from among you seven men of good reputation, (H)full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task. But we will (I)devote ourselves to prayer and to the [d]ministry of the word.” The [e]announcement found approval with the whole [f]congregation; and they chose (J)Stephen, a man (K)full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and (L)Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and [g]Nicolas, a [h](M)proselyte from (N)Antioch. And they brought these men before the apostles; and after (O)praying, they (P)laid their hands on them.

(Q)The word of God kept spreading; and (R)the number of the disciples continued to increase greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were becoming obedient to (S)the faith.

And Stephen, full of grace and power, was performing great (T)wonders and [i]signs among the people. But some men from what was called the Synagogue of the Freedmen, including both (U)Cyrenians and (V)Alexandrians, and some from (W)Cilicia and [j](X)Asia, rose up and argued with Stephen. 10 But they were unable to [k]cope with his wisdom and the Spirit by whom he was speaking. 11 Then they secretly induced men to say, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.” 12 And they stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes, and they (Y)came up to him and dragged him away, and brought him [l]before (Z)the [m]Council. 13 They put forward (AA)false witnesses who said, “This man does not stop [n]speaking against this (AB)holy place and the Law; 14 for we have heard him say that (AC)this Nazarene, Jesus, will destroy this place and change (AD)the customs which Moses handed down to us.” 15 And all who were sitting in the [o](AE)Council stared at him, and they saw his face, which was like the face of an angel.

Stephen’s Defense

Now the high priest said, “Are these things so?”

And [p]Stephen said, “Listen to me, (AF)[q]brothers and fathers! (AG)The God of glory (AH)appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in [r]Haran, and He said to him, ‘(AI)Go from your country and your relatives, and come to the land which I will show you.’ (AJ)Then he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in [s]Haran. And (AK)from there, after his father died, God had him move to this country in which you are now living. But He gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot of ground, and yet, (AL)He promised that He would give it to him as a possession, and to his descendants after him, even though he had no child. But (AM)God spoke to this effect, that his descendants would be strangers in a land that was not theirs, and [t]they would enslave and mistreat them for four hundred years. And whatever nation to which they are enslaved I Myself will judge,’ said God, ‘and (AN)after that they will come out and [u]serve Me in this place.’ And He (AO)gave him [v]the covenant of circumcision; and so (AP)Abraham fathered Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day; and (AQ)Isaac fathered Jacob, and (AR)Jacob, the twelve (AS)patriarchs.

“The patriarchs (AT)became jealous of Joseph and sold him into Egypt. Yet God was with him, 10 and rescued him from all his afflictions, and (AU)granted him favor and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and he made him governor over Egypt and his entire household.

11 “Now (AV)a famine came over all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction with it, and our fathers [w]could find no food. 12 But (AW)when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our fathers there the first time. 13 And on the second visit, (AX)Joseph [x]made himself known to his brothers, and (AY)Joseph’s family was revealed to Pharaoh. 14 Then (AZ)Joseph sent word and invited his father Jacob and all his relatives to come to him, (BA)seventy-five [y](BB)people in all. 15 And (BC)Jacob went down to Egypt, and he and our fathers died there. 16 And they were brought back from there to [z](BD)Shechem and laid in the tomb which Abraham had purchased for a sum of money from the sons of [aa]Hamor in [ab]Shechem.

17 “But as the (BE)time of the promise which God had assured to Abraham was approaching, (BF)the people increased and multiplied in Egypt, 18 until (BG)another king arose over Egypt who did not know Joseph. 19 It was he who (BH)shrewdly took advantage of our nation and mistreated our fathers in order that they would (BI)abandon their infants in the Nile, so that they would not survive. 20 At this time (BJ)Moses was born; and he was beautiful to God. He was nurtured for three months in his father’s home. 21 And after he had been put outside, (BK)Pharaoh’s daughter [ac]took him away and nurtured him as her own son. 22 Moses was educated in all (BL)the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was proficient in [ad]speaking and action. 23 But when he was approaching the age of forty, (BM)it entered his [ae]mind to visit his countrymen, the sons of Israel. 24 And when he saw one of them being treated unjustly, he defended and took vengeance for the oppressed man by fatally striking the Egyptian. 25 And he thought that his brothers understood that God was granting them [af]deliverance [ag]through him; but they did not understand. 26 (BN)And on the following day he appeared to them as they were fighting each other, and he tried to reconcile them to peace, by saying, ‘Men, you are brothers, why are you injuring each other?’ 27 But the one who was injuring his neighbor pushed him away, saying, ‘(BO)Who made you a ruler and judge over us? 28 (BP)You do not intend to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday, do you?’ 29 At this remark, (BQ)Moses fled and became a stranger in the land of [ah]Midian, where he (BR)fathered two sons.

30 “After forty years had passed, (BS)an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in the flame of a burning thorn bush. 31 When Moses saw it, he was astonished at the sight; and as he approached to look more closely, the voice of the Lord came: 32 (BT)I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob.’ Moses shook with fear and did not dare to look closely. 33 (BU)But the Lord said to him, ‘[ai](BV)Remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground. 34 (BW)I have certainly seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their groaning, and I have come down to rescue them; and (BX)now come, I will send you to Egypt.’

35 “This Moses whom they (BY)disowned, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’ is the one whom God [aj]sent to be both a ruler and a deliverer with the [ak]help of the angel who appeared to him in the thorn bush. 36 (BZ)This man led them out, performing (CA)wonders and [al]signs in the land of Egypt and in the Red Sea, and in the (CB)wilderness for forty years. 37 This is the Moses who said to the sons of Israel, ‘(CC)God will raise up for you a prophet [am]like me from your countrymen.’ 38 This is the one who was in (CD)the [an]assembly in the wilderness together with (CE)the angel who spoke to him at length on Mount Sinai, and who was with our fathers; and he received (CF)living (CG)words to pass on to you. 39 Our fathers were unwilling to be obedient to him; on the contrary they (CH)rejected him and turned back to Egypt in their hearts, 40 (CI)saying to Aaron, ‘Make us [ao]a god who will go before us; for this Moses who led us out of the land of Egyptwe do not know what happened to him.’ 41 [ap]At that time (CJ)they made a [aq]calf and brought a sacrifice to the idol, and were rejoicing in (CK)the works of their hands. 42 But God (CL)turned away and gave them over to [ar]serve the heavenly [as]lights; as it is written in the book of the prophets: ‘(CM)You did not offer Me victims and sacrifices (CN)for forty years in the wilderness, did you, house of Israel? 43 (CO)You also took along the tabernacle of Moloch and the star of your god [at]Rompha, the images which you made to worship. I also will deport you beyond Babylon.’

44 “Our fathers had (CP)the tabernacle of testimony in the wilderness, just as He who spoke to Moses directed him to make it (CQ)according to the pattern which he had seen. 45 Our fathers in turn received it, and they also (CR)brought it in with Joshua upon dispossessing the [au]nations that God drove out from our fathers, until the time of David. 46 [av](CS)David found favor in God’s sight, and (CT)asked that he might [aw]find a dwelling place for the [ax]house of Jacob. 47 But it was (CU)Solomon who built a house for Him. 48 However, (CV)the Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands; as the prophet says:

49 (CW)Heaven is My throne,
And the earth is the footstool of My feet;
What kind of house will you build for Me?’ says the Lord,
Or what place is there for My rest?
50 (CX)Was it not My hand that made all these things?’

51 “You men who are (CY)stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the Holy Spirit; you are doing just as your fathers did. 52 (CZ)Which one of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? They killed those who had previously announced the coming of (DA)the Righteous One, and (DB)you have now become betrayers and murderers of Him; 53 you who received the Law as (DC)ordained by angels, and yet did not keep it.”

Stephen Put to Death

54 Now when they heard this, they were (DD)infuriated, and they began gnashing their teeth at him. 55 But he, being (DE)full of the Holy Spirit, (DF)looked intently into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing (DG)at the right hand of God; 56 and he said, “Behold, I see the (DH)heavens opened and (DI)the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” 57 But they shouted with loud voices, and covered their ears and rushed at him with one [ay]mind. 58 When they had (DJ)driven him out of the city, they began stoning him; and (DK)the witnesses (DL)laid aside their cloaks at the feet of (DM)a young man named Saul. 59 They went on stoning Stephen as he (DN)called on the Lord and said, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!” 60 Then he (DO)fell on his knees and cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, (DP)do not hold this sin against them!” Having said this, he [az](DQ)fell asleep.

Choosing of the Seven

Now about this time, when the number of disciples was increasing, a complaint was made by the [a]Hellenists (Greek-speaking Jews) against the [[b]native] Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily serving of food. So the [c]Twelve called the disciples together and said, “It is not appropriate for us to neglect [teaching] the word of God in order to serve tables and manage the distribution of food. Therefore, brothers, choose from among you seven men with good reputations [men of godly character and moral integrity], full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task. But we will [continue to] devote ourselves [steadfastly] to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” The suggestion pleased the whole congregation; and they selected [d]Stephen, a man full of faith [in Christ Jesus], and [filled with and led by] the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas (Nikolaos), a proselyte (Gentile convert) from Antioch. They brought these men before the apostles; and after praying, they laid their hands on them [to dedicate and commission them for this service].

And the message of God kept on growing and spreading, and the number of disciples continued to increase greatly in Jerusalem; and a large number of the priests were becoming obedient to the faith [accepting Jesus as Messiah and acknowledging Him as the Source of eternal salvation].

Now Stephen, full of grace (divine blessing, favor) and power, was doing great wonders and signs (attesting miracles) among the people. However, some men from what was called the Synagogue of the Freedmen (freed Jewish slaves), both Cyrenians and Alexandrians, and some from Cilicia and [the province of] Asia, rose up and questioned and argued with Stephen. 10 But they were not able to successfully withstand and cope with the wisdom and the intelligence [and the power and inspiration] of the Spirit by whom he was speaking. 11 Then [to attack him another way] they secretly instructed men to say, “We have heard this man [Stephen] speak blasphemous (slanderous, sacrilegious, abusive) words against Moses and against God.” 12 And they provoked and incited the people, as well as the elders and the scribes, and they came up to Stephen and seized him and brought him before the Council (Sanhedrin, Jewish High Court). 13 They presented false witnesses who said, “This man never stops speaking against this holy place and the Law [of Moses]; 14 for we have heard him say that this Jesus the Nazarene will tear down this place and will change the traditions and customs which Moses handed down to us.” 15 Then all those who were sitting in the Council, stared [intently] at him, and they saw that Stephen’s face was like the face of an angel.

Stephen’s Defense

Now the [e]high priest asked [Stephen], “Are these charges true?”

And he answered, “Brothers and fathers, listen to me! The God of glory [the Shekinah, the radiance of God] appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran,(A) and He said to him, ‘Leave your country and your relatives, and come to the land that I will show you.’(B) Then he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. And from there, after his father died, God sent him to this country in which you now live.(C) But He did not give him inheritable property, not even enough ground to take a step on, yet He promised that He would give it to Him as a possession, and to his descendants after him.(D) And this is, in effect, what God spoke [to him]: That his descendants would be aliens (strangers) in a foreign land, and that they would be enslaved and mistreated for four hundred years. And I will judge any nation to whom they will be in bondage,’ said God, ‘and after that they will come out and serve Me [in worship] in this place.’(E) And God gave Abraham a covenant [a formal agreement to be strictly observed] of [which] circumcision [was the sign]; and so [under these circumstances] Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day; and Isaac [became the father] of [f]Jacob, and Jacob [became the father] of the [g]twelve patriarchs.(F)

“The [ten elder] patriarchs, overwhelmed with jealousy, sold [their younger brother] Joseph into [slavery in] Egypt; but God was with him,(G) 10 and He rescued him from all his suffering, and gave him favor and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and he made Joseph governor over Egypt and over his entire household.(H)

11 “Now a famine came over all Egypt and Canaan, bringing great distress and our fathers could not find food [for their households and livestock].(I) 12 But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our fathers there the first time.(J) 13 And on the second visit Joseph identified himself to his brothers, and Joseph’s family and background were revealed to Pharaoh.(K) 14 Then Joseph sent and invited Jacob his father and all his relatives to come to him, seventy-five persons in all.(L) 15 And Jacob (Israel) went down into Egypt, and [h]there he died, as did our fathers;(M) 16 and [from Egypt] [i]their bodies were taken back to Shechem and placed in the tomb which Abraham had purchased for a sum of money from the sons of Hamor in Shechem.(N)

17 “But as the time [for the fulfillment] of the promise which God had made to Abraham was approaching, the [Hebrew] people increased and multiplied in Egypt,(O) 18 until [the time when] there arose another king over egypt who did not know joseph [nor his history and the merit of his service to Egypt].(P) 19 He shrewdly exploited our race and mistreated our fathers, forcing them to expose their [male] babies so that they would die.(Q) 20 It was at this [critical] time that Moses was born; and he was lovely in the sight of God, and for three months he was nourished in his father’s house.(R) 21 Then when he was set outside [to die], Pharaoh’s daughter rescued him and claimed him for herself, and cared for him as her own son.(S) 22 So Moses was educated in all the wisdom and culture of the Egyptians, and he was a man of power in words and deeds. 23 But when he reached the age of forty, it came into his heart to visit his brothers, the sons of Israel. 24 And when he saw one [of them] being treated unfairly, he defended the oppressed man and avenged him by striking and killing the Egyptian. 25 He expected his countrymen to understand that God was granting them freedom through him [assuming that they would accept him], but they did not understand. 26 Then on the next day he suddenly appeared to two of them as they were fighting, and he tried to reconcile them, saying, ‘Men, you are brothers; why do you wrong one another?’ 27 But the man who was injuring his neighbor pushed Moses away, saying, ‘Who appointed you ruler and judge over us? 28 Do you intend to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’ 29 At this remark Moses fled and became an exile in the land of Midian, where he fathered two sons.(T)

30 “After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount [j]Sinai, in the flame of a burning thorn bush. 31 When Moses saw it, he was astonished at the sight; but as he went near to look more closely, the voice of the Lord came [to him, saying]: 32 I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob.’ Moses trembled with fear and did not dare to look. 33 Then the Lord said to him, ‘Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground [worthy of reverence and respect]. 34 I have most certainly seen the oppression of My people in Egypt and have heard their groaning, and I have come down to rescue them. Now come, and I will send you to Egypt [as My messenger].’(U)

35 “This Moses whom they rejected, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’ is the very one whom God sent to be both a ruler and a deliverer, with the [protecting and helping] hand of the Angel who appeared to him in the thorn bush.(V) 36 This man led them out [of Egypt] after performing wonders and signs in the land of Egypt and at the Red Sea and in the wilderness for forty years.(W) 37 This is the Moses who said to the children of Israel, ‘God will raise up for you a Prophet [k]like me from your countrymen.’(X) 38 This is the one who was in the congregation in the wilderness together with the Angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and who was with our fathers; and he received living oracles [divine words that still live] to be handed down to you.(Y) 39 Our fathers were unwilling to be subject to him [and refused to listen to him]. They rejected him, and in their hearts turned back to Egypt.(Z) 40 They said to Aaron, ‘Make for us gods who will go before us; for this Moses who led us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has happened to him.’(AA) 41 In those days they made a calf and brought a sacrifice to the idol, and rejoiced and celebrated over the works of their hands.(AB) 42 But God turned away [from them] and handed them over to serve the [l]host of heaven. As it is written and forever remains written in the book of the prophets, ‘It was not [really] to Me that you offered victims and sacrifices for forty years in the wilderness, was it, O house of Israel?(AC) 43 You also took along the tabernacle (portable temple) of Moloch and the star of the god Rompha, the images which you made to worship; and I will remove you beyond Babylon [carrying you away into exile].’(AD)

44 “Our fathers had the tabernacle of testimony in the wilderness, just as God directed Moses to make it according to the pattern which he had seen.(AE) 45 Our fathers also brought it in [with them into the land] with Joshua when they dispossessed the [m]nations whom God drove out before our fathers, [and so it remained here] until the time of David,(AF) 46 who found favor (grace, spiritual blessing) in the sight of God and asked that he might [be allowed to] find a dwelling place for the [n]God of Jacob.(AG) 47 But it was Solomon who built a house for Him.(AH) 48 However, the Most High [the One infinitely exalted above humanity] does not dwell in houses made by human hands; as the prophet [Isaiah] says,(AI)

49
Heaven is My throne,
And the earth is the footstool for My feet;
What kind of house will you build for Me?’ says the Lord,
Or what place is there for My rest?
50
Was it not My hand that made all these things?’(AJ)

51 “You stiff-necked and stubborn people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you are always actively resisting the Holy Spirit. You are doing just as your fathers did.(AK) 52 Which one of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? They killed those who proclaimed beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become; 53 you who received the law as ordained and delivered to you by angels, and yet you did not obey it!”

Stephen Put to Death

54 Now when [o]they heard this [accusation and understood its implication], they were cut to the heart, and they began grinding their teeth [in rage] at him. 55 But he, being full of the Holy Spirit and led by Him, gazed into heaven and saw the glory [the great splendor and majesty] of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God; 56 and he said, “Look! I see the heavens opened up [in welcome] and [p]the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!” 57 But they shouted with loud voices, and covered their ears and together rushed at him [considering him guilty of blasphemy]. 58 Then they drove him out of the city and began stoning him; and the witnesses placed their outer robes at the feet of a young man named [q]Saul.(AL) 59 They continued stoning Stephen as he called on the Lord and said, “Lord Jesus, receive and accept and welcome my spirit!” 60 Then falling on his knees [in worship], he cried out loudly, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them [do not charge them]!” When he had said this, he fell asleep [in death].

Seven Chosen to Serve

Now in these days (A)when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists[a] arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in (B)the daily distribution. And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. (C)Therefore, brothers,[b] pick out from among you seven men (D)of good repute, (E)full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. But (F)we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” And what they said pleased the whole gathering, and they chose Stephen, (G)a man full of faith and (H)of the Holy Spirit, and (I)Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, (J)a proselyte of Antioch. These they set before the apostles, and (K)they prayed and (L)laid their hands on them.

And (M)the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests (N)became obedient to (O)the faith.

Stephen Is Seized

And Stephen, full of grace and (P)power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people. Then some of those who belonged to the synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called), and of the Cyrenians, and of the Alexandrians, and of those from Cilicia and Asia, rose up and disputed with Stephen. 10 But (Q)they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking. 11 Then (R)they secretly instigated men who said, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.” 12 And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes, and they came upon him and seized him and brought him before the council, 13 and they (S)set up false (T)witnesses who said, “This man never ceases to speak words against (U)this holy place and the law, 14 for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth (V)will destroy this place and will (W)change (X)the customs that Moses delivered to us.” 15 And gazing at him, all who sat in the council saw that his face (Y)was like the face of an angel.

Stephen's Speech

And the high priest said, “Are these things so?” And Stephen said:

(Z)“Brothers and fathers, hear me. (AA)The God (AB)of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, (AC)before he lived in Haran, and said to him, (AD)‘Go out from your land and from your kindred and go into the land that I will show you.’ (AE)Then he went out from the land of the Chaldeans and lived in Haran. And God spoke to this effect—that (AJ)his offspring would (AK)be sojourners in a land belonging to others, who would enslave them and afflict them (AL)four hundred years. ‘But (AM)I will judge the nation that they serve,’ said God, ‘and after that they shall come out (AN)and worship me in this place.’ And (AO)he gave him the covenant of circumcision. And (AP)so Abraham became the father of Isaac, and (AQ)circumcised him on the eighth day, and (AR)Isaac became the father of Jacob, and (AS)Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.

“And the patriarchs, (AT)jealous of Joseph, (AU)sold him into Egypt; but (AV)God was with him 10 and rescued him out of all his afflictions and (AW)gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt, (AX)who made him ruler over Egypt and over all his household. 11 Now (AY)there came a famine throughout all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction, and our fathers could find no food. 12 (AZ)But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers on their first visit. 13 And (BA)on the second visit (BB)Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and (BC)Joseph's family became known to Pharaoh. 14 And (BD)Joseph sent and summoned Jacob his father and all his kindred, (BE)seventy-five persons in all. 15 And (BF)Jacob went down into Egypt, and (BG)he died, he (BH)and our fathers, 16 and (BI)they were carried back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that (BJ)Abraham had bought for a sum of silver from the sons of Hamor in Shechem.

17 “But (BK)as the time of the promise drew near, which God had granted to Abraham, (BL)the people increased and multiplied in Egypt 18 until there arose over Egypt another king (BM)who did not know Joseph. 19 (BN)He dealt shrewdly with our race and forced our fathers to expose their infants, (BO)so that they would not be kept alive. 20 (BP)At this time Moses was born; and he was beautiful in God's sight. And he was brought up for three months in his father's house, 21 and (BQ)when he was exposed, Pharaoh's daughter adopted him and brought him up as her own son. 22 And Moses (BR)was instructed in (BS)all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was (BT)mighty in his words and deeds.

23 “When he was forty years old, it came into his heart (BU)to visit his brothers, the children of Israel. 24 And seeing one of them being wronged, he defended the oppressed man and avenged him by striking down the Egyptian. 25 He supposed that his brothers would understand that God was giving them salvation by his hand, but they did not understand. 26 (BV)And on the following day he appeared to them as they were quarreling and tried to reconcile them, saying, ‘Men, you are brothers. Why do you wrong each other?’ 27 But the man who was wronging his neighbor thrust him aside, saying, (BW)‘Who made you a ruler and a judge over us? 28 Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’ 29 At this retort (BX)Moses fled and became an exile in the land of Midian, (BY)where he became the father of two sons.

30 “Now when forty years had passed, (BZ)an angel appeared to him (CA)in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush. 31 When Moses saw it, he was amazed at the sight, and as he drew near to look, there came the voice of the Lord: 32 (CB)‘I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob.’ And Moses trembled and did not dare to look. 33 Then the Lord said to him, (CC)‘Take off the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground. 34 (CD)I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and (CE)have heard their groaning, and (CF)I have come down to deliver them. (CG)And now come, I will send you to Egypt.’

35 “This Moses, whom they rejected, (CH)saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’—this man God sent as both ruler and redeemer (CI)by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush. 36 (CJ)This man led them out, performing (CK)wonders and signs (CL)in Egypt and (CM)at the Red Sea and (CN)in the wilderness for (CO)forty years. 37 This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you (CP)a prophet like me from your brothers.’ 38 This is the one (CQ)who was in the congregation in the wilderness with (CR)the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our fathers. (CS)He received (CT)living (CU)oracles to give to us. 39 Our fathers refused to obey him, but thrust him aside, and (CV)in their hearts they turned to Egypt, 40 saying to Aaron, (CW)‘Make for us gods who will go before us. As for this Moses who led us out from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’ 41 And (CX)they made a calf in those days, and offered a sacrifice to the idol and (CY)were rejoicing in (CZ)the works of their hands. 42 But (DA)God turned away and (DB)gave them over to worship (DC)the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets:

(DD)“‘Did you bring to me slain beasts and sacrifices,
(DE)during the forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
43 You took up the tent of (DF)Moloch
and the star of your god Rephan,
    the images that you made to worship;
and I will send you into exile beyond Babylon.’

44 “Our fathers had (DG)the tent of witness in the wilderness, just as he who spoke to Moses (DH)directed him to make it, according to the pattern that he had seen. 45 Our fathers in turn (DI)brought it in with Joshua when they (DJ)dispossessed the nations (DK)that God drove out before our fathers. So it was (DL)until the days of David, 46 (DM)who found favor in the sight of God and (DN)asked to find a dwelling place for (DO)the God of Jacob.[c] 47 But it was (DP)Solomon who built a house for him. 48 (DQ)Yet the Most High does not dwell (DR)in houses made by hands, as the prophet says,

49 (DS)“‘Heaven is my throne,
(DT)and the earth is my footstool.
What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord,
or what is the place of my rest?
50 Did not my hand make all these things?’

51 (DU)“You stiff-necked people, (DV)uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. (DW)As your fathers did, so do you. 52 (DX)Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of (DY)the Righteous One, (DZ)whom you have now betrayed and murdered, 53 you who received the law (EA)as delivered by angels and (EB)did not keep it.”

The Stoning of Stephen

54 Now when they heard these things (EC)they were enraged, and they (ED)ground their teeth at him. 55 But he, (EE)full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw (EF)the glory of God, and Jesus standing (EG)at the right hand of God. 56 And he said, “Behold, I see (EH)the heavens opened, and (EI)the Son of Man standing (EJ)at the right hand of God.” 57 But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears and rushed together[d] at him. 58 Then (EK)they cast him out of the city and (EL)stoned him. And (EM)the witnesses laid down their garments (EN)at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 And as they were stoning Stephen, (EO)he called out, “Lord Jesus, (EP)receive my spirit.” 60 And (EQ)falling to his knees he cried out with a loud voice, (ER)“Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” And when he had said this, (ES)he fell asleep.

And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.

Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.

Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.

But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.

And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch:

Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them.

And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.

And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.

Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen.

10 And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.

11 Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God.

12 And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council,

13 And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law:

14 For we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us.

15 And all that sat in the council, looking stedfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel.

Then said the high priest, Are these things so?

And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,

And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee.

Then came he out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell.

And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.

And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and entreat them evil four hundred years.

And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this place.

And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs.

And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him,

10 And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

11 Now there came a dearth over all the land of Egypt and Chanaan, and great affliction: and our fathers found no sustenance.

12 But when Jacob heard that there was corn in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first.

13 And at the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren; and Joseph's kindred was made known unto Pharaoh.

14 Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls.

15 So Jacob went down into Egypt, and died, he, and our fathers,

16 And were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the father of Sychem.

17 But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,

18 Till another king arose, which knew not Joseph.

19 The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live.

20 In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father's house three months:

21 And when he was cast out, Pharaoh's daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.

22 And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.

23 And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.

24 And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian:

25 For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not.

26 And the next day he shewed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?

27 But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?

28 Wilt thou kill me, as thou diddest the Egyptian yesterday?

29 Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons.

30 And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.

31 When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the Lord came unto him,

32 Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold.

33 Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground.

34 I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.

35 This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush.

36 He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.

37 This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear.

38 This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us:

39 To whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt,

40 Saying unto Aaron, Make us gods to go before us: for as for this Moses, which brought us out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.

41 And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.

42 Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?

43 Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.

44 Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen.

45 Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David;

46 Who found favour before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.

47 But Solomon built him an house.

48 Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet,

49 Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?

50 Hath not my hand made all these things?

51 Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.

52 Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:

53 Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.

54 When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth.

55 But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,

56 And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

57 Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord,

58 And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man's feet, whose name was Saul.

59 And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.

60 And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
