35 And he said to them, “Men of Israel, take care what you are about to do with these men. 36 For (A)before these days Theudas rose up, (B)claiming to be somebody, and a number of men, about four hundred, joined him. He was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing. 37 After him Judas the Galilean rose up in the days of (C)the census and drew away some of the people after him. He too perished, and all who followed him were scattered. 38 So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for (D)if this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail; 39 but (E)if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You (F)might even be found opposing God!” So they took his advice, 40 and (G)when they had called in the apostles, (H)they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

35 Then he addressed the Sanhedrin: “Men of Israel, consider carefully what you intend to do to these men. 36 Some time ago Theudas appeared, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men rallied to him. He was killed, all his followers were dispersed, and it all came to nothing. 37 After him, Judas the Galilean appeared in the days of the census(A) and led a band of people in revolt. He too was killed, and all his followers were scattered. 38 Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail.(B) 39 But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.”(C)

40 His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged.(D) Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
