“Indeed, I myself was convinced that I ought to do many things against the name of Jesus of Nazareth.[a](A) 10 And that is what I did in Jerusalem; with authority received from the chief priests, I not only locked up many of the saints in prison, but I also cast my vote against them when they were being condemned to death.(B) 11 By punishing them often in all the synagogues I tried to force them to blaspheme, and since I was so furiously enraged at them, I pursued them even to foreign cities.(C)

Paul Tells of His Conversion

12 “With this in mind, I was traveling to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests,(D) 13 when at midday along the road, Your Excellency,[b] I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, shining around me and my companions. 14 When we had all fallen to the ground, I heard a voice saying to me in the Hebrew[c] language, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? It hurts you to kick against the goads.’(E) 15 I asked, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ The Lord answered, ‘I am Jesus whom you are persecuting. 16 But get up and stand on your feet, for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you to serve and testify to the things in which you have seen me[d] and to those in which I will appear to you.(F) 17 I will rescue you from your people and from the gentiles—to whom I am sending you(G) 18 to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’(H)

Paul Tells of His Preaching

19 “After that, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision 20 but declared first to those in Damascus, then in Jerusalem and throughout the countryside of Judea, and also to the gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God and do deeds consistent with repentance.(I) 21 For this reason the Jews seized me in the temple and tried to kill me.(J)

“I too was convinced(A) that I ought to do all that was possible to oppose(B) the name of Jesus of Nazareth.(C) 10 And that is just what I did in Jerusalem. On the authority of the chief priests I put many of the Lord’s people(D) in prison,(E) and when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them.(F) 11 Many a time I went from one synagogue to another to have them punished,(G) and I tried to force them to blaspheme. I was so obsessed with persecuting them that I even hunted them down in foreign cities.

12 “On one of these journeys I was going to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests. 13 About noon, King Agrippa, as I was on the road, I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, blazing around me and my companions. 14 We all fell to the ground, and I heard a voice(H) saying to me in Aramaic,[a](I) ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’

15 “Then I asked, ‘Who are you, Lord?’

‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,’ the Lord replied. 16 ‘Now get up and stand on your feet.(J) I have appeared to you to appoint you as a servant and as a witness of what you have seen and will see of me.(K) 17 I will rescue you(L) from your own people and from the Gentiles.(M) I am sending you to them 18 to open their eyes(N) and turn them from darkness to light,(O) and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins(P) and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’(Q)

19 “So then, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient(R) to the vision from heaven. 20 First to those in Damascus,(S) then to those in Jerusalem(T) and in all Judea, and then to the Gentiles,(U) I preached that they should repent(V) and turn to God and demonstrate their repentance by their deeds.(W) 21 That is why some Jews seized me(X) in the temple courts and tried to kill me.(Y)
