16 To whom I answered, that it is not the manner of the Romans for favor to [a]deliver any man to the death, before that he which is accused, have the accusers before him, and have place to defend himself, concerning the crime.
17 Therefore when they were come hither, without delay the day following I sat on the judgment seat, and commanded the man to be brought forth.
18 Against whom when the accusers stood up, they brought no crime of such things as I supposed:

16 “I told them that it is not the Roman custom to hand over anyone before they have faced their accusers and have had an opportunity to defend themselves against the charges.(A) 17 When they came here with me, I did not delay the case, but convened the court the next day and ordered the man to be brought in.(B) 18 When his accusers got up to speak, they did not charge him with any of the crimes I had expected.
