Acts 24:10-23

¹⁰And when ^(A)the governor had nodded for him to speak, Paul responded:

“Knowing that for many years you have been a judge to this nation, I cheerfully make my defense, ¹¹since you can take note of the fact that no more than ^(B)twelve days ago I went up to Jerusalem to worship. ¹²^(C)And neither in the temple did they find me carrying on a discussion with anyone or ^(D)causing ^[a]a riot, nor in the synagogues, nor in the city itself. ¹³^(E)Nor can they prove to you the things of which they now accuse me. ¹⁴But I confess this to you, that in accordance with ^[b]^(F)the Way, which they call a ^(G)sect, I do serve ^(H)the God of our fathers, ^(I)believing everything that is in accordance with the Law and is written in the Prophets; ¹⁵having a hope in God, which ^(J)these men cherish themselves, that there shall certainly be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked. ¹⁶In view of this ^(K)I also do my best to maintain a blameless conscience both before God and before other people, always. ¹⁷Now ^(L)after several years I ^(M)came to bring charitable gifts to my nation and to present offerings, ¹⁸in which they found me occupied in the temple, having been ^(N)purified, without any ^(O)crowd or uproar. But there were some ^(P)Jews from ^[c]Asia— ¹⁹who ought to have been present before you and to have been ^(Q)bringing charges, if they should have anything against me. ²⁰Or else have these men themselves declare what violation they discovered when I stood before ^(R)the ^[d]Council, ²¹other than in regard to this one declaration which ^(S)I shouted while standing among them, ‘For the resurrection of the dead I am on trial before you today!’”

²²But Felix, ^[e]having quite accurate knowledge about ^[f]^(T)the Way, adjourned them, saying, “When Lysias the commander comes down, I will decide your case.” ²³He gave orders to the centurion for ^[g]Paul to be ^(U)kept in custody and yet ^(V)have some freedom, and not to prevent any of ^(W)his friends from providing for his needs.

¹⁰And when the governor had beckoned unto him to speak, Paul answered,

Forasmuch as I know that thou hast been of many years a judge unto this nation, I cheerfully make my defence: ¹¹seeing that thou canst take knowledge that it is not more than twelve days since I went up to worship at Jerusalem: ¹²and neither in the temple did they find me disputing with any man or stirring up a crowd, nor in the synagogues, nor in the city. ¹³Neither can they prove to thee the things whereof they now accuse me. ¹⁴But this I confess unto thee, that after the Way which they call a sect, so serve I the God of our fathers, believing all things which are according to the law, and which are written in the prophets; ¹⁵having hope toward God, which these also themselves ^[a]look for, that there shall be a resurrection both of the just and unjust. ¹⁶^[b]Herein I also exercise myself to have a conscience void of offence toward God and men always. ¹⁷Now after some years I came to bring alms to my nation, and offerings: ¹⁸^[c]amidst which they found me purified in the temple, with no crowd, nor yet with tumult: but there were certain Jews from Asia— ¹⁹who ought to have been here before thee, and to make accusation, if they had aught against me. ²⁰Or else let these men themselves say what wrong-doing they found when I stood before the council, ²¹except it be for this one voice, that I cried standing among them, Touching the resurrection of the dead I am called in question before you this day.

²²But Felix, having more exact knowledge concerning the Way, deferred them, saying, When Lysias the ^[d]chief captain shall come down, I will determine your matter. ²³And he gave order to the centurion that he should be kept in charge, and should have indulgence; and not to forbid any of his friends to minister unto him.

¹⁰When the governor^(A) motioned for him to speak, Paul replied: “I know that for a number of years you have been a judge over this nation; so I gladly make my defense. ¹¹You can easily verify that no more than twelve days^(B) ago I went up to Jerusalem to worship. ¹²My accusers did not find me arguing with anyone at the temple,^(C) or stirring up a crowd^(D) in the synagogues or anywhere else in the city. ¹³And they cannot prove to you the charges they are now making against me.^(E) ¹⁴However, I admit that I worship the God of our ancestors^(F) as a follower of the Way,^(G) which they call a sect.^(H) I believe everything that is in accordance with the Law and that is written in the Prophets,^(I) ¹⁵and I have the same hope in God as these men themselves have, that there will be a resurrection^(J) of both the righteous and the wicked.^(K) ¹⁶So I strive always to keep my conscience clear^(L) before God and man.

¹⁷“After an absence of several years, I came to Jerusalem to bring my people gifts for the poor^(M) and to present offerings. ¹⁸I was ceremonially clean^(N) when they found me in the temple courts doing this. There was no crowd with me, nor was I involved in any disturbance.^(O) ¹⁹But there are some Jews from the province of Asia,^(P) who ought to be here before you and bring charges if they have anything against me.^(Q) ²⁰Or these who are here should state what crime they found in me when I stood before the Sanhedrin— ²¹unless it was this one thing I shouted as I stood in their presence: ‘It is concerning the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial before you today.’”^(R)

²²Then Felix, who was well acquainted with the Way,^(S) adjourned the proceedings. “When Lysias the commander comes,” he said, “I will decide your case.” ²³He ordered the centurion to keep Paul under guard^(T) but to give him some freedom^(U) and permit his friends to take care of his needs.^(V)
