40 And when he had given him leave, Paul, standing on the steps, motioned with his hand to the people; and when there was a great hush, he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, saying:

22 “Brethren and fathers, hear the defense which I now make before you.”

40 So when he had given him permission, Paul stood on the stairs and (A)motioned with his hand to the people. And when there was a great silence, he spoke to them in the (B)Hebrew language, saying,

40 After receiving the commander’s permission, Paul stood on the steps and motioned(A) to the crowd. When they were all silent, he said to them in Aramaic[a]:(B) 22 “Brothers and fathers,(C) listen now to my defense.”
