29 “Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you (A)of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Therefore, being a prophet, (B)and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, [a]according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, 31 he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, (C)that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. 32 (D)This Jesus God has raised up, (E)of which we are all witnesses. 33 Therefore (F)being exalted [b]to (G)the right hand of God, and (H)having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He (I)poured out this which you now see and hear.

34 “For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself:

(J)‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
35 Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’

36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”

37 Now when they heard this, (K)they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”

38 Then Peter said to them, (L)“Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the [c]remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and (M)to your children, and (N)to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

A Vital Church Grows

40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this [d]perverse generation.” 41 Then those who [e]gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. 42 (O)And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ [f]doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.

29 “Fellow Israelites,(A) I can tell you confidently that the patriarch(B) David died and was buried,(C) and his tomb is here(D) to this day. 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne.(E) 31 Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay.(F) 32 God has raised this Jesus to life,(G) and we are all witnesses(H) of it. 33 Exalted(I) to the right hand of God,(J) he has received from the Father(K) the promised Holy Spirit(L) and has poured out(M) what you now see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,

36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord(O) and Messiah.”(P)

37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”(Q)

38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized,(R) every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.(S) And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.(T) 39 The promise is for you and your children(U) and for all who are far off(V)—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.”(W) 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number(X) that day.

The Fellowship of the Believers

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching(Y) and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread(Z) and to prayer.(AA)

Continuing Power in the Church

12 And (A)through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. (B)And they were all with one accord in Solomon’s Porch. 13 Yet (C)none of the rest dared join them, (D)but the people esteemed them highly. 14 And believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women, 15 so that they brought the sick out into the streets and laid them on beds and couches, (E)that at least the shadow of Peter passing by might fall on some of them. 16 Also a multitude gathered from the surrounding cities to Jerusalem, bringing (F)sick people and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed.

Imprisoned Apostles Freed

17 (G)Then the high priest rose up, and all those who were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with [a]indignation, 18 (H)and laid their hands on the apostles and put them in the common prison. 19 But at night (I)an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, 20 “Go, stand in the temple and speak to the people (J)all the words of this life.”

21 And when they heard that, they entered the temple early in the morning and taught. (K)But the high priest and those with him came and called the [b]council together, with all the [c]elders of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought.

Apostles on Trial Again

22 But when the officers came and did not find them in the prison, they returned and reported, 23 saying, “Indeed we found the prison shut securely, and the guards standing [d]outside before the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside!” 24 Now when [e]the high priest, (L)the captain of the temple, and the chief priests heard these things, they wondered what the outcome would be. 25 So one came and told them, [f]saying, “Look, the men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people!”

26 Then the captain went with the officers and brought them without violence, (M)for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned. 27 And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them, 28 saying, (N)“Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, (O)and intend to bring this Man’s (P)blood on us!”

29 But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: (Q)“We ought to obey God rather than men. 30 (R)The God of our fathers raised up Jesus whom you murdered by (S)hanging on a tree. 31 (T)Him God has exalted to His right hand to be (U)Prince and (V)Savior, (W)to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. 32 And (X)we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit (Y)whom God has given to those who obey Him.”

The Apostles Heal Many

12 The apostles performed many signs and wonders(A) among the people. And all the believers used to meet together(B) in Solomon’s Colonnade.(C) 13 No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people.(D) 14 Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number.(E) 15 As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by.(F) 16 Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by impure spirits, and all of them were healed.(G)

The Apostles Persecuted

17 Then the high priest and all his associates, who were members of the party(H) of the Sadducees,(I) were filled with jealousy. 18 They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail.(J) 19 But during the night an angel(K) of the Lord opened the doors of the jail(L) and brought them out.(M) 20 “Go, stand in the temple courts,” he said, “and tell the people all about this new life.”(N)

21 At daybreak they entered the temple courts, as they had been told, and began to teach the people.

When the high priest and his associates(O) arrived, they called together the Sanhedrin(P)—the full assembly of the elders of Israel—and sent to the jail for the apostles. 22 But on arriving at the jail, the officers did not find them there.(Q) So they went back and reported, 23 “We found the jail securely locked, with the guards standing at the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside.” 24 On hearing this report, the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests(R) were at a loss, wondering what this might lead to.

25 Then someone came and said, “Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people.” 26 At that, the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles. They did not use force, because they feared that the people(S) would stone them.

27 The apostles were brought in and made to appear before the Sanhedrin(T) to be questioned by the high priest. 28 “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,”(U) he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.”(V)

29 Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings!(W) 30 The God of our ancestors(X) raised Jesus from the dead(Y)—whom you killed by hanging him on a cross.(Z) 31 God exalted him to his own right hand(AA) as Prince and Savior(AB) that he might bring Israel to repentance and forgive their sins.(AC) 32 We are witnesses of these things,(AD) and so is the Holy Spirit,(AE) whom God has given to those who obey him.”
