16 but this is what has been spoken through the prophet Joel:

17 (A)And it shall be in the last days,’ God says,
That I will pour out My Spirit on all [a]mankind;
And your sons and your daughters will prophesy,
And your young men will see visions,
And your old men will [b]have dreams;
18 And even on My male and female [c]servants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days,
And they will prophesy.
19 And I will [d]display wonders in the sky above
And signs on the earth below,
Blood, fire, and [e]vapor of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned into darkness
And the moon into blood,
Before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes.
21 And it shall be that (B)everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’

22 “Men of Israel, listen to these words: (C)Jesus the Nazarene, (D)a Man [f]attested to you by God with [g]miracles and (E)wonders and [h]signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know— 23 this Man, delivered over by the (F)predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, (G)you nailed to a cross by the hands of [i]godless men and put Him to death. 24 [j]But (H)God raised Him from the dead, putting an end to the [k]agony of death, since it (I)was impossible for Him to be held [l]in its power. 25 For David says of Him,

(J)I saw the Lord continually before me,
Because He is at my right hand, so that I will not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue was overjoyed;
Moreover my flesh also will live in hope;
27 For You will not abandon my soul to (K)Hades,
(L)Nor will You [m]allow Your [n]Holy One to [o]undergo decay.
28 You have made known to me the ways of life;
You will make me full of gladness with Your presence.’

29 [p]Brothers, I may confidently say to you regarding the (M)patriarch David that he both (N)died and (O)was buried, and (P)his tomb is [q]with us to this day. 30 So because he was (Q)a prophet and knew that (R)God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one [r]of his descendants on his throne, 31 he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the [s]Christ, that (S)He was neither abandoned to Hades, nor did His flesh [t]suffer decay. 32 It is this Jesus whom (T)God raised up, [u]a fact to which we are all (U)witnesses. 33 Therefore, [v]since He has been exalted [w](V)at the right hand of God, and (W)has received (X)the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father, He has (Y)poured out this which you both see and hear. 34 For it was not David who ascended into [x]heaven, but he himself says:

(Z)The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit at My right hand,
35 Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”’

36 Therefore let all the (AA)house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both (AB)Lord and [y]Christ—this Jesus (AC)whom you crucified.”

37 Now when they heard this, they were [z]pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “[aa]Brothers, (AD)what are we to do?” 38 Peter said to them, “(AE)Repent, and each of you be (AF)baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For (AG)the promise is for you and your children and for all who are (AH)far away, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.” 40 And with many other words he solemnly (AI)testified and kept on urging them, saying, “[ab]Be saved from this (AJ)perverse generation!” 41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand [ac](AK)souls. 42 They were (AL)continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to (AM)the breaking of bread and (AN)to [ad]prayer.

43 [ae]Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many (AO)wonders and [af]signs were taking place through the apostles. 44 And all the believers [ag]were together and (AP)had all things in common; 45 and they (AQ)would sell their property and possessions and share them with all, to the extent that anyone had need. 46 (AR)Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and (AS)breaking bread [ah]from house to house, they were taking their [ai]meals together with gladness and [aj]sincerity of heart, 47 praising God and (AT)having favor with all the people. And the Lord (AU)was adding to [ak]their number day by day (AV)those who were being saved.

16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

17 “‘In the last days, God says,
    I will pour out my Spirit on all people.(A)
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,(B)
    your young men will see visions,
    your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women,
    I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
    and they will prophesy.(C)
19 I will show wonders in the heavens above
    and signs on the earth below,(D)
    blood and fire and billows of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned to darkness
    and the moon to blood(E)
    before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21 And everyone who calls
    on the name of the Lord(F) will be saved.’[a](G)

22 “Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth(H) was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs,(I) which God did among you through him,(J) as you yourselves know. 23 This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge;(K) and you, with the help of wicked men,[b] put him to death by nailing him to the cross.(L) 24 But God raised him from the dead,(M) freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.(N) 25 David said about him:

“‘I saw the Lord always before me.
    Because he is at my right hand,
    I will not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
    my body also will rest in hope,
27 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
    you will not let your holy one see decay.(O)
28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
    you will fill me with joy in your presence.’[c](P)

29 “Fellow Israelites,(Q) I can tell you confidently that the patriarch(R) David died and was buried,(S) and his tomb is here(T) to this day. 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne.(U) 31 Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay.(V) 32 God has raised this Jesus to life,(W) and we are all witnesses(X) of it. 33 Exalted(Y) to the right hand of God,(Z) he has received from the Father(AA) the promised Holy Spirit(AB) and has poured out(AC) what you now see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,

“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
    “Sit at my right hand
35 until I make your enemies
    a footstool for your feet.”’[d](AD)

36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord(AE) and Messiah.”(AF)

37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”(AG)

38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized,(AH) every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.(AI) And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.(AJ) 39 The promise is for you and your children(AK) and for all who are far off(AL)—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.”(AM) 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number(AN) that day.

The Fellowship of the Believers

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching(AO) and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread(AP) and to prayer.(AQ) 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.(AR) 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common.(AS) 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.(AT) 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts.(AU) They broke bread(AV) in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.(AW) And the Lord added to their number(AX) daily those who were being saved.
