So the churches were strengthened(A) in the faith and grew daily in numbers.(B)

Paul’s Vision of the Man of Macedonia

Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia(C) and Galatia,(D) having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia.(E) When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus(F) would not allow them to. So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas.(G) During the night Paul had a vision(H) of a man of Macedonia(I) standing and begging him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10 After Paul had seen the vision, we(J) got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel(K) to them.

Lydia’s Conversion in Philippi

11 From Troas(L) we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samothrace, and the next day we went on to Neapolis. 12 From there we traveled to Philippi,(M) a Roman colony and the leading city of that district[a] of Macedonia.(N) And we stayed there several days.

13 On the Sabbath(O) we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. 14 One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira(P) named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart(Q) to respond to Paul’s message. 15 When she and the members of her household(R) were baptized,(S) she invited us to her home. “If you consider me a believer in the Lord,” she said, “come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us.

Paul and Silas in Prison

16 Once when we were going to the place of prayer,(T) we were met by a female slave who had a spirit(U) by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling.

And so were the churches established in the faith, and increased in number daily.

Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia,

After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not.

And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas.

And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us.

10 And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them.

11 Therefore loosing from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, and the next day to Neapolis;

12 And from thence to Philippi, which is the chief city of that part of Macedonia, and a colony: and we were in that city abiding certain days.

13 And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither.

14 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.

15 And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.

16 And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:
