26 (A)men who have (B)risked their lives for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 We have therefore sent (C)Judas and Silas, who themselves will tell you the same things by word of mouth. 28 For it has seemed good (D)to the Holy Spirit and (E)to us (F)to lay on you no greater burden than these requirements: 29 (G)that you abstain from (H)what has been sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from what has been strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well. Farewell.”

30 So when they were sent off, they went down to Antioch, and having gathered the congregation together, they delivered the letter. 31 And when they had read it, they rejoiced because of its encouragement. 32 And Judas and Silas, who were themselves (I)prophets, encouraged and (J)strengthened (K)the brothers with many words. 33 And after they had spent some time, they were sent off (L)in peace by (M)the brothers to those who had sent them.[a] 35 But (N)Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.

Paul and Barnabas Separate

36 And after some days Paul said to Barnabas, “Let us return and visit (O)the brothers (P)in every city where we proclaimed the word of the Lord, and see how they are.” 37 Now Barnabas wanted to take with them (Q)John called Mark. 38 But Paul thought best not to take with them one (R)who had withdrawn from them in Pamphylia and had not gone with them to the work. 39 And there arose (S)a sharp disagreement, so that they separated from each other. (T)Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed away to Cyprus, 40 but Paul chose Silas and departed, (U)having been commended by (V)the brothers to (W)the grace of the Lord. 41 And he went through Syria and Cilicia, (X)strengthening the churches.

Timothy Joins Paul and Silas

16 Paul[b] came also to Derbe and to Lystra. A disciple was there, named (Y)Timothy, (Z)the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek. He was well spoken of by (AA)the brothers[c] at Lystra and Iconium. Paul wanted Timothy to accompany him, and he (AB)took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those places, for they all knew that his father was a Greek. As they went on their way through the cities, they delivered to them for observance (AC)the decisions (AD)that had been reached by (AE)the apostles and elders who were in Jerusalem. (AF)So the churches were strengthened in (AG)the faith, and they increased in numbers (AH)daily.

The Macedonian Call

And (AI)they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. And when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but (AJ)the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them. So, passing by Mysia, they went down (AK)to Troas. And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10 And when Paul[d] had seen the vision, immediately (AL)we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

The Conversion of Lydia

11 So, setting sail from Troas, we (AM)made a direct voyage to Samothrace, and the following day to Neapolis, 12 and from there to (AN)Philippi, which is a leading city of the[e] district of Macedonia and (AO)a Roman colony. We remained in this city some days. 13 And (AP)on the Sabbath day we went outside the gate (AQ)to the riverside, where we supposed there was a place of prayer, and we (AR)sat down and spoke to the women who had come together. 14 One who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, (AS)who was a worshipper of God. The Lord (AT)opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul. 15 And after she was baptized, (AU)and her household as well, she urged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.” And she (AV)prevailed upon us.

26 men who have risked their lives(A) for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 Therefore we are sending Judas and Silas(B) to confirm by word of mouth what we are writing. 28 It seemed good to the Holy Spirit(C) and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements: 29 You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality.(D) You will do well to avoid these things.

Farewell.

30 So the men were sent off and went down to Antioch, where they gathered the church together and delivered the letter. 31 The people read it and were glad for its encouraging message. 32 Judas and Silas,(E) who themselves were prophets,(F) said much to encourage and strengthen the believers. 33 After spending some time there, they were sent off by the believers with the blessing of peace(G) to return to those who had sent them. [34] [a] 35 But Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch, where they and many others taught and preached(H) the word of the Lord.(I)

Disagreement Between Paul and Barnabas

36 Some time later Paul said to Barnabas, “Let us go back and visit the believers in all the towns(J) where we preached the word of the Lord(K) and see how they are doing.” 37 Barnabas wanted to take John, also called Mark,(L) with them, 38 but Paul did not think it wise to take him, because he had deserted them(M) in Pamphylia and had not continued with them in the work. 39 They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus, 40 but Paul chose Silas(N) and left, commended by the believers to the grace of the Lord.(O) 41 He went through Syria(P) and Cilicia,(Q) strengthening the churches.(R)

Timothy Joins Paul and Silas

16 Paul came to Derbe and then to Lystra,(S) where a disciple named Timothy(T) lived, whose mother was Jewish and a believer(U) but whose father was a Greek. The believers(V) at Lystra and Iconium(W) spoke well of him. Paul wanted to take him along on the journey, so he circumcised him because of the Jews who lived in that area, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.(X) As they traveled from town to town, they delivered the decisions reached by the apostles and elders(Y) in Jerusalem(Z) for the people to obey.(AA) So the churches were strengthened(AB) in the faith and grew daily in numbers.(AC)

Paul’s Vision of the Man of Macedonia

Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia(AD) and Galatia,(AE) having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia.(AF) When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus(AG) would not allow them to. So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas.(AH) During the night Paul had a vision(AI) of a man of Macedonia(AJ) standing and begging him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10 After Paul had seen the vision, we(AK) got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel(AL) to them.

Lydia’s Conversion in Philippi

11 From Troas(AM) we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samothrace, and the next day we went on to Neapolis. 12 From there we traveled to Philippi,(AN) a Roman colony and the leading city of that district[b] of Macedonia.(AO) And we stayed there several days.

13 On the Sabbath(AP) we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. 14 One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira(AQ) named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart(AR) to respond to Paul’s message. 15 When she and the members of her household(AS) were baptized,(AT) she invited us to her home. “If you consider me a believer in the Lord,” she said, “come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us.
