Acts 1:12-26

The Upper Room
12 Then they (A)returned to Jerusalem from the [a](B)mountain called [b]Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a [c]Sabbath day’s journey away. 13 When they had entered the city, they went up to (C)the upstairs room where they were staying, that is, (D)Peter, John, [d]James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, [e]James the son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and (E)Judas the [f]son of [g]James. 14 All these (F)were continually devoting themselves with one [h]mind to prayer, along with (G)the women, and Mary the (H)mother of Jesus, and with His (I)brothers.
15 [i]At this time Peter stood up among (J)the brothers and sisters (a group of about 120 [j]people was there together), and said, 16 “[k]Brothers, (K)the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit foretold by the mouth of David concerning Judas, (L)who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. 17 For he was (M)counted among us and received his share in (N)this ministry.” 18 (Now this man (O)acquired a field with (P)the price of his wickedness, and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his intestines gushed out. 19 And it became known to all the residents of Jerusalem; as a result that field was called Hakeldama in (Q)their own language, that is, Field of Blood.) 20 “For it is written in the book of Psalms:
‘(R)May his residence be made desolate,
And may there be none living in it’;
and,
21 Therefore it is necessary that of the men who have accompanied us all the time that (T)the Lord Jesus went in and out [m]among us— 22 (U)beginning [n]with the baptism of John until the day that He (V)was taken up from us—one of these must become a (W)witness with us of His resurrection.” 23 So they put forward two men, Joseph called Barsabbas (who was also called Justus), and (X)Matthias. 24 And they (Y)prayed and said, “You, Lord, who (Z)know the hearts of all people, show which one of these two You have chosen 25 to [o]occupy (AA)this ministry and (AB)apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” 26 And they [p](AC)drew lots for them, and the lot fell [q]to (AD)Matthias; and he was added to (AE)the eleven apostles.

Matthias Chosen to Replace Judas
12 Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem(A) from the hill called the Mount of Olives,(B) a Sabbath day’s walk[a] from the city. 13 When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room(C) where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James.(D) 14 They all joined together constantly in prayer,(E) along with the women(F) and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.(G)
15 In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) 16 and said, “Brothers and sisters,[b](H) the Scripture had to be fulfilled(I) in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas,(J) who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus. 17 He was one of our number(K) and shared in our ministry.”(L)
18 (With the payment(M) he received for his wickedness, Judas bought a field;(N) there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. 19 Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language(O) Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)
20 “For,” said Peter, “it is written in the Book of Psalms:
and,
21 Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us, 22 beginning from John’s baptism(R) to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness(S) with us of his resurrection.”
23 So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. 24 Then they prayed,(T) “Lord, you know everyone’s heart.(U) Show us(V) which of these two you have chosen 25 to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.” 26 Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.(W)
