5 Mais un homme nommé Ananias, avec Saphira sa femme, vendit une propriété,

2 et retint une partie du prix, sa femme le sachant; puis il apporta le reste, et le déposa aux pieds des apôtres.

3 Pierre lui dit: Ananias, pourquoi Satan a-t-il rempli ton coeur, au point que tu mentes au Saint Esprit, et que tu aies retenu une partie du prix du champ?

4 S'il n'eût pas été vendu, ne te restait-il pas? Et, après qu'il a été vendu, le prix n'était-il pas à ta disposition? Comment as-tu pu mettre en ton coeur un pareil dessein? Ce n'est pas à des hommes que tu as menti, mais à Dieu.

5 Ananias, entendant ces paroles, tomba, et expira. Une grande crainte saisit tous les auditeurs.

6 Les jeunes gens, s'étant levés, l'enveloppèrent, l'emportèrent, et l'ensevelirent.

7 Environ trois heures plus tard, sa femme entra, sans savoir ce qui était arrivé.

8 Pierre lui adressa la parole: Dis-moi, est-ce à un tel prix que vous avez vendu le champ? Oui, répondit-elle, c'est à ce prix-là.

9 Alors Pierre lui dit: Comment vous êtes-vous accordés pour tenter l'Esprit du Seigneur? Voici, ceux qui ont enseveli ton mari sont à la porte, et ils t'emporteront.

10 Au même instant, elle tomba aux pieds de l'apôtre, et expira. Les jeunes gens, étant entrés, la trouvèrent morte; ils l'emportèrent, et l'ensevelirent auprès de son mari.

11 Une grande crainte s'empara de toute l'assemblée et de tous ceux qui apprirent ces choses.

12 Beaucoup de miracles et de prodiges se faisaient au milieu du peuple par les mains des apôtres. Ils se tenaient tous ensemble au portique de Salomon,

13 et aucun des autres n'osait se joindre à eux; mais le peuple les louait hautement.

14 Le nombre de ceux qui croyaient au Seigneur, hommes et femmes, s'augmentait de plus en plus;

15 en sorte qu'on apportait les malades dans les rues et qu'on les plaçait sur des lits et des couchettes, afin que, lorsque Pierre passerait, son ombre au moins couvrît quelqu'un d'eux.

16 La multitude accourait aussi des villes voisines à Jérusalem, amenant des malades et des gens tourmentés par des esprits impurs; et tous étaient guéris.

17 Cependant le souverain sacrificateur et tous ceux qui étaient avec lui, savoir le parti des sadducéens, se levèrent, remplis de jalousie,

18 mirent les mains sur les apôtres, et les jetèrent dans la prison publique.

19 Mais un ange du Seigneur, ayant ouvert pendant la nuit les portes de la prison, les fit sortir, et leur dit:

20 Allez, tenez-vous dans le temple, et annoncez au peuple toutes les paroles de cette vie.

21 Ayant entendu cela, ils entrèrent dès le matin dans le temple, et se mirent à enseigner. Le souverain sacrificateur et ceux qui étaient avec lui étant survenus, ils convoquèrent le sanhédrin et tous les anciens des fils d'Israël, et ils envoyèrent chercher les apôtres à la prison.

22 Les huissiers, à leur arrivée, ne les trouvèrent point dans la prison. Ils s'en retournèrent, et firent leur rapport,

23 en disant: Nous avons trouvé la prison soigneusement fermée, et les gardes qui étaient devant les portes; mais, après avoir ouvert, nous n'avons trouvé personne dedans.

24 Lorsqu'ils eurent entendu ces paroles, le commandant du temple et les principaux sacrificateurs ne savaient que penser des apôtres et des suites de cette affaire.

25 Quelqu'un vint leur dire: Voici, les hommes que vous avez mis en prison sont dans le temple, et ils enseignent le peuple.

26 Alors le commandant partit avec les huissiers, et les conduisit sans violence, car ils avaient peur d'être lapidés par le peuple.

27 Après qu'ils les eurent amenés en présence du sanhédrin, le souverain sacrificateur les interrogea en ces termes:

28 Ne vous avons-nous pas défendu expressément d'enseigner en ce nom-là? Et voici, vous avez rempli Jérusalem de votre enseignement, et vous voulez faire retomber sur nous le sang de cet homme!

29 Pierre et les apôtres répondirent: Il faut obéir à Dieu plutôt qu'aux hommes.

30 Le Dieu de nos pères a ressuscité Jésus, que vous avez tué, en le pendant au bois.

31 Dieu l'a élevé par sa droite comme Prince et Sauveur, pour donner à Israël la repentance et le pardon des péchés.

32 Nous sommes témoins de ces choses, de même que le Saint Esprit, que Dieu a donné à ceux qui lui obéissent.

33 Furieux de ces paroles, ils voulaient les faire mourir.

34 Mais un pharisien, nommé Gamaliel, docteur de la loi, estimé de tout le peuple, se leva dans le sanhédrin, et ordonna de faire sortir un instant les apôtres.

35 Puis il leur dit: Hommes Israélites, prenez garde à ce que vous allez faire à l'égard de ces gens.

36 Car, il n'y a pas longtemps que parut Theudas, qui se donnait pour quelque chose, et auquel se rallièrent environ quatre cents hommes: il fut tué, et tous ceux qui l'avaient suivi furent mis en déroute et réduits à rien.

37 Après lui, parut Judas le Galiléen, à l'époque du recensement, et il attira du monde à son parti: il périt aussi, et tous ceux qui l'avaient suivi furent dispersés.

38 Et maintenant, je vous le dis ne vous occupez plus de ces hommes, et laissez-les aller. Si cette entreprise ou cette oeuvre vient des hommes, elle se détruira;

39 mais si elle vient de Dieu, vous ne pourrez la détruire. Ne courez pas le risque d'avoir combattu contre Dieu.

40 Ils se rangèrent à son avis. Et ayant appelé les apôtres, ils les firent battre de verges, ils leur défendirent de parler au nom de Jésus, et ils les relâchèrent.

41 Les apôtres se retirèrent de devant le sanhédrin, joyeux d'avoir été jugés dignes de subir des outrages pour le nom de Jésus.

42 Et chaque jour, dans le temple et dans les maisons, ils ne cessaient d'enseigner, et d'annoncer la bonne nouvelle de Jésus Christ.

Ananias and Sapphira Lie to the Holy Spirit

5 Now a certain man named[a] Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, 2 and he kept back for himself some of the proceeds, and his[b] wife was aware of it.[c] And he brought a certain part and[d] placed it[e] at the feet of the apostles. 3 But Peter said, “Ananias, for what reason has Satan filled your heart, that you lied to the Holy Spirit and kept back for yourself some of the proceeds of the piece of land? 4 When it[f] remained to you, did it not remain yours? And when it[g] was sold, was it at your disposal? How is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to people, but to God!”

5 And when[h] Ananias heard these words, he fell down and[i] died. And great fear came on all those who heard about it.[j] 6 So the young men stood up, wrapped him up, and carried him[k] out and[l] buried him.[m] 7 And it happened that there was an interval of about three hours, and his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 And Peter said to her, “Tell me whether you both[n] were paid this much for the piece of land.” And she said, “Yes, this much.” 9 So Peter said to her, “How is it that it was agreed by you two[o] to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out!” 10 And immediately she fell down at his feet and died. So when[p] the young men came in, they found her dead, and carried her[q] out and[r] buried her[s] with her husband. 11 And great fear came on the whole church and on all who heard about these things.

Many Signs and Wonders Are Performed by the Apostles

12 Now many signs and wonders were being performed among the people through the hands of the apostles. And they were all together[t] in Solomon’s Portico. 13 And none of the rest dared to join them, but the people spoke highly of them. 14 And even more believers in the Lord[u] were being added, large numbers of both men and women, 15 so that they even carried out the sick into the streets and put them[v] on cots and mats[w] so that when[x] Peter came by, at least his[y] shadow would fall on some of them. 16 And the people of the towns around Jerusalem also came together, bringing the sick and those tormented by unclean spirits, who were all being healed.

The Apostles Arrested and Imprisoned

17 Now the high priest rose up and all those who were with him (that is, the party of the Sadducees), and[z] they were filled with jealousy. 18 And they laid hands on the apostles and put them in the public prison. 19 But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the prison and led them out and[aa] said, 20 “Go and stand in the temple courts[ab] and[ac] proclaim to the people all the words of this life.” 21 And when they[ad] heard this,[ae] they entered at daybreak into the temple courts[af] and began teaching.[ag]

Now when[ah] the high priest and those with him arrived, they summoned the Sanhedrin—even the whole council of elders of the sons of Israel—and sent to the prison to have them brought. 22 But the officers who came[ai] did not find them in the prison, and they returned and[aj] reported, 23 saying, “We found the prison locked with all security and the guards standing at the doors, but when we[ak] opened them,[al] we found no one inside!” 24 Now when both the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed concerning them, as to what this might be. 25 But someone came and[am] reported to them, “Behold, the men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple courts[an] and teaching the people!” 26 Then the captain went with the officers and[ao] brought them, not with force (for they were afraid of the people, lest they be stoned by them).[ap]

The Apostles on Trial Before the Sanhedrin

27 And when they[aq] had brought them, they made them[ar] stand in the Sanhedrin,[as] and the high priest put a question to them, 28 saying, “We strictly commanded[at] you[au] not to teach in this name? And behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching! And you are intending to bring upon us the blood of this man!” 29 But Peter and the apostles answered and[av] said, “It is necessary to obey God rather than men! 30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you killed by[aw] hanging him[ax] on a tree. 31 This one God has exalted to his right hand as Leader and Savior to grant repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. 32 And we are witnesses of these things, and so is[ay] the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.” 33 Now when[az] they heard this,[ba] they were infuriated, and were wanting to execute them. 34 But a certain man stood up in the Sanhedrin,[bb] a Pharisee named[bc] Gamaliel, a teacher of the law respected by all the people, and[bd] gave orders to put the men outside for a short time. 35 And he said to them, “Men and Israelites, take care for yourselves what you are about to do to these men! 36 For before these days, Theudas rose up saying he was somebody. A number of men, about four hundred, joined him.[be] He[bf] was executed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing. 37 After this man, Judas the Galilean rose up in the days of the census and caused people to follow him in revolt.[bg] And that one perished, and all who followed him were scattered. 38 And now I tell you, keep away from these men, and leave them alone, because if this plan or this matter is from people, it will be overthrown.[bh] 39 But if it is from God, you will not be able to overthrow them, lest you even be found fighting against God.” So they were persuaded by him. 40 And they summoned the apostles, beat them,[bi] commanded them[bj] not to speak in the name of Jesus, and released them.[bk] 41 So they went out from the presence of the Sanhedrin[bl] rejoicing, because they had been considered worthy to be dishonored for the sake of the name. 42 Every day, both in the temple courts[bm] and from house to house, they did not stop teaching and proclaiming the good news that the Christ[bn] was Jesus.

Ananias and Sapphira

5 Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. 2 With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself,(A) but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet.(B)

3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan(C) has so filled your heart(D) that you have lied to the Holy Spirit(E) and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?(F) 4 Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal?(G) What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”(H)

5 When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died.(I) And great fear(J) seized all who heard what had happened. 6 Then some young men came forward, wrapped up his body,(K) and carried him out and buried him.

7 About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 Peter asked her, “Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?”

“Yes,” she said, “that is the price.”(L)

9 Peter said to her, “How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord?(M) Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.”

10 At that moment she fell down at his feet and died.(N) Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband.(O) 11 Great fear(P) seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.

The Apostles Heal Many

12 The apostles performed many signs and wonders(Q) among the people. And all the believers used to meet together(R) in Solomon’s Colonnade.(S) 13 No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people.(T) 14 Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number.(U) 15 As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by.(V) 16 Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by impure spirits, and all of them were healed.(W)

The Apostles Persecuted

17 Then the high priest and all his associates, who were members of the party(X) of the Sadducees,(Y) were filled with jealousy. 18 They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail.(Z) 19 But during the night an angel(AA) of the Lord opened the doors of the jail(AB) and brought them out.(AC) 20 “Go, stand in the temple courts,” he said, “and tell the people all about this new life.”(AD)

21 At daybreak they entered the temple courts, as they had been told, and began to teach the people.

When the high priest and his associates(AE) arrived, they called together the Sanhedrin(AF)—the full assembly of the elders of Israel—and sent to the jail for the apostles. 22 But on arriving at the jail, the officers did not find them there.(AG) So they went back and reported, 23 “We found the jail securely locked, with the guards standing at the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside.” 24 On hearing this report, the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests(AH) were at a loss, wondering what this might lead to.

25 Then someone came and said, “Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people.” 26 At that, the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles. They did not use force, because they feared that the people(AI) would stone them.

27 The apostles were brought in and made to appear before the Sanhedrin(AJ) to be questioned by the high priest. 28 “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,”(AK) he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.”(AL)

29 Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings!(AM) 30 The God of our ancestors(AN) raised Jesus from the dead(AO)—whom you killed by hanging him on a cross.(AP) 31 God exalted him to his own right hand(AQ) as Prince and Savior(AR) that he might bring Israel to repentance and forgive their sins.(AS) 32 We are witnesses of these things,(AT) and so is the Holy Spirit,(AU) whom God has given to those who obey him.”

33 When they heard this, they were furious(AV) and wanted to put them to death. 34 But a Pharisee named Gamaliel,(AW) a teacher of the law,(AX) who was honored by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered that the men be put outside for a little while. 35 Then he addressed the Sanhedrin: “Men of Israel, consider carefully what you intend to do to these men. 36 Some time ago Theudas appeared, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men rallied to him. He was killed, all his followers were dispersed, and it all came to nothing. 37 After him, Judas the Galilean appeared in the days of the census(AY) and led a band of people in revolt. He too was killed, and all his followers were scattered. 38 Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail.(AZ) 39 But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.”(BA)

40 His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged.(BB) Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

41 The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing(BC) because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name.(BD) 42 Day after day, in the temple courts(BE) and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news(BF) that Jesus is the Messiah.(BG)
