La fede di Abacuc
2 (A)Io starò al mio posto di guardia,
mi metterò sopra una torre,
e starò attento a quello che il Signore mi dirà,
e a quello che dovrò rispondere circa la rimostranza che ho fatta.
2 Il Signore mi rispose e disse:
«Scrivi la visione,
incidila su tavole,
perché si possa leggere con facilità;
3 perché è una visione per un tempo già fissato;
essa si affretta verso il suo termine e non mentirà;
se tarda, aspettala;
poiché certamente verrà; e non tarderà.
4 Egli è pieno d'orgoglio, non agisce rettamente;
ma il giusto per la sua fede vivrà[a]. Cause del giudizio contro l'oppressore
5 (B)«Certo, il vino è traditore;
l'uomo arrogante non può starsene tranquillo;
egli allarga la sua bocca come il *soggiorno dei morti;
come la morte, non si può saziare,
ma raduna presso di sé tutte le nazioni,
raccoglie intorno a sé tutti i popoli.
6 E tutti questi non lo canzoneranno con proverbi,
sarcasmi, enigmi?
Diranno:
“Guai a chi accumula ciò che non è suo!
Fino a quando?
Guai a chi si carica di pegni!”
7 I tuoi creditori non spunteranno forse all'improvviso?
I tuoi oppressori non si desteranno?
Allora tu diventerai loro preda.
8 Poiché tu hai saccheggiato molte nazioni,
tutto il resto dei popoli ti saccheggerà,
a causa del sangue umano sparso,
della violenza fatta ai paesi,
alle città e a tutti i loro abitanti.
9 Guai a colui che è avido d'illecito guadagno per la sua casa,
per mettere il suo nido in alto
e scampare alla mano della sventura!
10 Tu hai designato la vergogna per la tua casa,
sterminando molti popoli,
e hai peccato contro te stesso.
11 Poiché la pietra grida dalla parete
e la trave risponde dall'armatura di legno.
12 Guai a colui che costruisce la città con il sangue
e fonda una città sull'*iniquità!
13 Non è forse volere del Signore
che i popoli si affatichino per il fuoco
e le nazioni si stanchino per nulla?
14 Poiché la conoscenza della gloria del Signore riempirà la terra
come le acque coprono il fondo del mare.
15 Guai a colui che dà da bere al prossimo,
a te che gli versi il veleno fino a ubriacarlo,
per guardarlo nella sua nudità!
16 Tu sarai saziato d'infamia anziché di gloria;
bevi anche tu ed esibisci la tua nudità!
La coppa della destra del Signore si riverserà su di te,
e l'infamia coprirà la tua gloria.
17 Poiché la violenza fatta al Libano
e la devastazione che spaventava le bestie ricadranno su di te,
a causa del sangue umano sparso,
della violenza fatta ai paesi,
alle città e a tutti i loro abitanti.
18 A che serve l'immagine scolpita, perché l'artefice la scolpisca?
A che serve l'immagine fusa che insegna la menzogna,
perché l'artefice confidi nel suo lavoro
e fabbrichi idoli muti?
19 Guai a chi dice al legno: “Svègliati!”
e alla pietra muta: “Àlzati!”
Può questa istruire?
Ecco, è ricoperta d'oro e d'argento,
ma non c'è in lei nessuno spirito.
20 Ma il Signore è nel suo *tempio santo;
tutta la terra faccia silenzio in sua presenza!»

Ang Sagot ng Panginoon kay Habakuk
2 Ako'y tatayo upang magbantay,
at magbabantay ako sa ibabaw ng tore,
at tatanaw upang makita ko kung ano ang kanyang sasabihin sa akin,
at kung ano ang aking isasagot tungkol sa aking daing.
2 At ang Panginoon ay sumagot sa akin:
“Isulat mo ang pangitain,
at gawin mong malinaw sa mga tapyas na bato,
upang ang makabasa niyon ay makatakbo.
3 Sapagkat(A) ang pangitain ay naghihintay pa ng panahon nito;
at nagsasalita tungkol sa wakas—hindi ito magsisinungaling.
Kung ito'y parang mabagal ay hintayin mo;
ito'y tiyak na darating, hindi ito maaantala.
4 Masdan(B) mo ang palalo!
Hindi tapat sa kanya ang kaluluwa niya,
ngunit ang matuwid ay mabubuhay sa pamamagitan ng kanyang pananampalataya.
5 Bukod dito ang alak[a] ay mandaraya;
ang taong hambog ay hindi mamamalagi sa kanyang tahanan.
Ang kanyang nasa ay parang Sheol,
at siya'y parang kamatayan na hindi masisiyahan.
Kanyang tinitipon para sa kanya ang lahat ng bansa
at tinitipon para sa kanya ang lahat ng bayan.”
6 Hindi ba ang lahat ng ito ay magsasalita ng kanilang pagtuya at panlilibak laban sa kanya, at kanilang sabihin,
“Kahabag-habag siya na nagpaparami ng di kanya—
Hanggang kailan ka magpapasan ng mga bagay na mula sa sangla?”
7 Hindi ba biglang tatayo ang iyong mga nagpapautang,
at magigising ang mga naniningil sa iyo?
Kung gayon ay magiging samsam ka nila.
8 Sapagkat iyong sinamsaman ang maraming bansa,
sasamsaman ka ng lahat ng nalabi sa mga tao,
dahil sa dugo ng mga tao at sa karahasang ginawa sa lupain,
sa mga lunsod at sa lahat ng naninirahan doon.
9 Kahabag-habag siya na may masamang pakinabang para sa kanyang sambahayan,
upang kanyang mailagay ang kanyang pugad sa itaas,
upang maligtas sa abot ng kapahamakan!
10 Ikaw ay nagbalak ng kahihiyan sa iyong sambahayan,
sa pamamagitan ng pagpatay ng maraming tao,
ikaw ay nagkasala laban sa iyong sarili.
11 Sapagkat ang bato ay daraing mula sa pader,
at ang biga mula sa mga kahoy ay sasagot.
12 Kahabag-habag siya na nagtatayo ng lunsod sa pamamagitan ng dugo,
at nagtatatag ng bayan sa pamamagitan ng kasamaan!
13 Hindi ba mula sa Panginoon ng mga hukbo
na ang mga tao ay gumagawa lamang para sa apoy,
at ang mga bansa ay nagpapakapagod sa walang kabuluhan?
14 Sapagkat(C) ang lupa ay mapupuno
ng kaalaman ng kaluwalhatian ng Panginoon,
gaya ng tubig na tumatakip sa dagat.
15 Kahabag-habag siya na nagpapainom sa kanyang kapwa,
na idinadagdag ang iyong kamandag at nilalasing sila,
upang iyong mamasdan ang kanilang kahubaran!
16 Ikaw ay mapupuno ng kahihiyan sa halip na kaluwalhatian.
Uminom ka, ikaw, at ilantad ang iyong kahubaran!
Ang kopa sa kanang kamay ng Panginoon
ay darating sa iyo,
at ang kahihiyan ang papalit sa iyong kaluwalhatian!
17 Ang karahasang ginawa sa Lebanon ay tatabon sa iyo,
ang pagkawasak sa mga hayop na tumakot sa kanila,
dahil sa dugo ng mga tao at sa karahasan sa lupain,
sa mga lunsod at sa lahat ng naninirahan doon.
18 Anong pakinabang sa diyus-diyosan
pagkatapos na anyuan ito ng gumawa niyon,
isang metal na larawan, na tagapagturo ng mga kasinungalingan?
Sapagkat ang manggagawa ay nagtitiwala sa kanyang sariling nilalang
kapag siya'y gumagawa ng mga piping diyus-diyosan!
19 Kahabag-habag siya na nagsasabi sa kahoy, Gumising ka;
sa piping bato, Bumangon ka!
Makakapagturo ba ito?
Tingnan ninyo, nababalot ito ng ginto at pilak,
at walang hininga sa loob niyon.
20 Ngunit ang Panginoon ay nasa kanyang templong banal;
tumahimik ang buong lupa sa harapan niya!

The Just Shall Live by Faith
2 I will (A)stand my watch
And set myself on the rampart,
And watch to see what He will say to me,
And what I will answer when I am corrected.
The Just Live by Faith
2 Then the Lord answered me and said:
(B)“Write the vision
And make it plain on tablets,
That he may run who reads it.
3 For (C)the vision is yet for an appointed time;
But at the end it will speak, and it will (D)not lie.
Though it tarries, (E)wait for it;
Because it will (F)surely come,
It will not tarry.
4 “Behold the proud,
His soul is not upright in him;
But the (G)just shall live by his faith.
Woe to the Wicked
5 “Indeed, because he transgresses by wine,
He is a proud man,
And he does not stay at home.
Because he (H)enlarges his desire as [a]hell,
And he is like death, and cannot be satisfied,
He gathers to himself all nations
And heaps up for himself all peoples.
6 “Will not all these (I)take up a proverb against him,
And a taunting riddle against him, and say,
‘Woe to him who increases
What is not his—how long?
And to him who loads himself with [b]many pledges’?
7 Will not [c]your creditors rise up suddenly?
Will they not awaken who oppress you?
And you will become their booty.
8 (J)Because you have plundered many nations,
All the remnant of the people shall plunder you,
Because of men’s [d]blood
And the violence of the land and the city,
And of all who dwell in it.
9 “Woe to him who covets evil gain for his house,
That he may (K)set his nest on high,
That he may be delivered from the [e]power of disaster!
10 You give shameful counsel to your house,
Cutting off many peoples,
And sin against your soul.
11 For the stone will cry out from the wall,
And the beam from the timbers will answer it.
12 “Woe to him who builds a town with bloodshed,
Who establishes a city by iniquity!
13 Behold, is it not of the Lord of hosts
That the peoples labor [f]to feed the fire,
And nations weary themselves in vain?
14 For the earth will be filled
With the knowledge of the glory of the Lord,
As the waters cover the sea.
15 “Woe to him who gives drink to his neighbor,
[g]Pressing him to your (L)bottle,
Even to make him drunk,
That you may look on [h]his nakedness!
16 You are filled with shame instead of glory.
You also—drink!
And [i]be exposed as uncircumcised!
The cup of the Lord’s right hand will be turned against you,
And utter shame will be on your glory.
17 For the violence done to Lebanon will cover you,
And the plunder of beasts which made them afraid,
Because of men’s blood
And the violence of the land and the city,
And of all who dwell in it.
18 “What profit is the image, that its maker should carve it,
The molded image, a teacher of lies,
That the maker of its mold should trust in it,
To make mute idols?
19 Woe to him who says to wood, ‘Awake!’
To silent stone, ‘Arise! It shall teach!’
Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver,
Yet in it there is no breath at all.
20 “But(M) the Lord is in His holy temple.
Let all the earth keep silence before Him.”

2 I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved.
2 And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.
3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.
4 Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.
5 Yea also, because he transgresseth by wine, he is a proud man, neither keepeth at home, who enlargeth his desire as hell, and is as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathereth unto him all nations, and heapeth unto him all people:
6 Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say, Woe to him that increaseth that which is not his! how long? and to him that ladeth himself with thick clay!
7 Shall they not rise up suddenly that shall bite thee, and awake that shall vex thee, and thou shalt be for booties unto them?
8 Because thou hast spoiled many nations, all the remnant of the people shall spoil thee; because of men's blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell therein.
9 Woe to him that coveteth an evil covetousness to his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of evil!
10 Thou hast consulted shame to thy house by cutting off many people, and hast sinned against thy soul.

12 Woe to him that buildeth a town with blood, and stablisheth a city by iniquity!

15 Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness!
16 Thou art filled with shame for glory: drink thou also, and let thy foreskin be uncovered: the cup of the Lord's right hand shall be turned unto thee, and shameful spewing shall be on thy glory.
17 For the violence of Lebanon shall cover thee, and the spoil of beasts, which made them afraid, because of men's blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell therein.
18 What profiteth the graven image that the maker thereof hath graven it; the molten image, and a teacher of lies, that the maker of his work trusteth therein, to make dumb idols?
19 Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it.
20 But the Lord is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him.
