These men, going ahead, waited for us at (A)Troas. But we sailed away from Philippi after (B)the Days of Unleavened Bread, and in five days joined them (C)at Troas, where we stayed seven days.

Ministering at Troas

Now on (D)the first day of the week, when the disciples came together (E)to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight. There were many lamps (F)in the upper room where [a]they were gathered together. And in a window sat a certain young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep. He was overcome by sleep; and as Paul continued speaking, he fell down from the third story and was taken up dead. 10 But Paul went down, (G)fell on him, and embracing him said, (H)“Do not trouble yourselves, for his life is in him.” 11 Now when he had come up, had broken bread and eaten, and talked a long while, even till daybreak, he departed. 12 And they brought the young man in alive, and they were not a little comforted.

From Troas to Miletus

13 Then we went ahead to the ship and sailed to Assos, there intending to take Paul on board; for so he had [b]given orders, intending himself to go on foot. 14 And when he met us at Assos, we took him on board and came to Mitylene. 15 We sailed from there, and the next day came opposite Chios. The following day we arrived at Samos and stayed at Trogyllium. The next day we came to Miletus. 16 For Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus, so that he would not have to spend time in Asia; for (I)he was hurrying (J)to be at Jerusalem, if possible, on (K)the Day of Pentecost.

The Ephesian Elders Exhorted

17 From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called for the elders of the church. 18 And when they had come to him, he said to them: “You know, (L)from the first day that I came to Asia, in what manner I always lived among you, 19 serving the Lord with all humility, with many tears and trials which happened to me (M)by the plotting of the Jews; 20 how (N)I kept back nothing that was helpful, but proclaimed it to you, and taught you publicly and from house to house, 21 (O)testifying to Jews, and also to Greeks, (P)repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. 22 And see, now (Q)I go bound in the spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing the things that will happen to me there, 23 except that (R)the Holy Spirit testifies in every city, saying that chains and tribulations await me. 24 [c]But (S)none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, (T)so that I may finish my [d]race with joy, (U)and the ministry (V)which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.

25 “And indeed, now I know that you all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, will see my face no more. 26 Therefore I testify to you this day that I am (W)innocent[e] of the blood of all men. 27 For I have not [f]shunned to declare to you (X)the whole counsel of God. 28 (Y)Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit (Z)has made you overseers, to shepherd the church [g]of God (AA)which He purchased (AB)with His own blood. 29 For I know this, that after my departure (AC)savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. 30 Also (AD)from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking [h]perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves. 31 Therefore watch, and remember that (AE)for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears.

32 “So now, brethren, I commend you to God and (AF)to the word of His grace, which is able (AG)to build you up and give you (AH)an inheritance among all those who are sanctified. 33 I have coveted no one’s silver or gold or apparel. 34 [i]Yes, you yourselves know (AI)that these hands have provided for my necessities, and for those who were with me. 35 I have shown you in every way, (AJ)by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’

36 And when he had said these things, he knelt down and prayed with them all. 37 Then they all (AK)wept [j]freely, and (AL)fell on Paul’s neck and kissed him, 38 sorrowing most of all for the words which he spoke, that they would see his face no more. And they accompanied him to the ship.

Warnings on the Journey to Jerusalem

21 Now it came to pass, that when we had departed from them and set sail, running a straight course we came to Cos, the following day to Rhodes, and from there to Patara. And finding a ship sailing over to Phoenicia, we went aboard and set sail. When we had sighted Cyprus, we passed it on the left, sailed to Syria, and landed at Tyre; for there the ship was to unload her cargo. And finding [k]disciples, we stayed there seven days. (AM)They told Paul through the Spirit not to go up to Jerusalem. When we had come to the end of those days, we departed and went on our way; and they all accompanied us, with wives and children, till we were out of the city. And (AN)we knelt down on the shore and prayed. When we had taken our leave of one another, we boarded the ship, and they returned (AO)home.

And when we had finished our voyage from Tyre, we came to Ptolemais, greeted the brethren, and stayed with them one day. On the next day we [l]who were Paul’s companions departed and came to (AP)Caesarea, and entered the house of Philip (AQ)the evangelist, (AR)who was one of the seven, and stayed with him. Now this man had four virgin daughters (AS)who prophesied. 10 And as we stayed many days, a certain prophet named (AT)Agabus came down from Judea. 11 When he had come to us, he took Paul’s belt, bound his own hands and feet, and said, “Thus says the Holy Spirit, (AU)‘So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man who owns this belt, and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’ ”

12 Now when we heard these things, both we and those from that place pleaded with him not to go up to Jerusalem. 13 Then Paul answered, (AV)“What do you mean by weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.”

14 So when he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, (AW)“The will of the Lord be done.”

Paul Urged to Make Peace

15 And after those days we [m]packed and went up to Jerusalem. 16 Also some of the disciples from Caesarea went with us and brought with them a certain Mnason of Cyprus, an early disciple, with whom we were to lodge.

17 (AX)And when we had come to Jerusalem, the brethren received us gladly. 18 On the following day Paul went in with us to (AY)James, and all the elders were present.

These men went on ahead and waited for us(A) at Troas.(B) But we sailed from Philippi(C) after the Festival of Unleavened Bread, and five days later joined the others at Troas,(D) where we stayed seven days.

Eutychus Raised From the Dead at Troas

On the first day of the week(E) we came together to break bread.(F) Paul spoke to the people and, because he intended to leave the next day, kept on talking until midnight. There were many lamps in the upstairs room(G) where we were meeting. Seated in a window was a young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep as Paul talked on and on. When he was sound asleep, he fell to the ground from the third story and was picked up dead. 10 Paul went down, threw himself on the young man(H) and put his arms around him. “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “He’s alive!”(I) 11 Then he went upstairs again and broke bread(J) and ate. After talking until daylight, he left. 12 The people took the young man home alive and were greatly comforted.

Paul’s Farewell to the Ephesian Elders

13 We went on ahead to the ship and sailed for Assos, where we were going to take Paul aboard. He had made this arrangement because he was going there on foot. 14 When he met us at Assos, we took him aboard and went on to Mitylene. 15 The next day we set sail from there and arrived off Chios. The day after that we crossed over to Samos, and on the following day arrived at Miletus.(K) 16 Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus(L) to avoid spending time in the province of Asia,(M) for he was in a hurry to reach Jerusalem,(N) if possible, by the day of Pentecost.(O)

17 From Miletus,(P) Paul sent to Ephesus for the elders(Q) of the church. 18 When they arrived, he said to them: “You know how I lived the whole time I was with you,(R) from the first day I came into the province of Asia.(S) 19 I served the Lord with great humility and with tears(T) and in the midst of severe testing by the plots of my Jewish opponents.(U) 20 You know that I have not hesitated to preach anything(V) that would be helpful to you but have taught you publicly and from house to house. 21 I have declared to both Jews(W) and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance(X) and have faith in our Lord Jesus.(Y)

22 “And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem,(Z) not knowing what will happen to me there. 23 I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me(AA) that prison and hardships are facing me.(AB) 24 However, I consider my life worth nothing to me;(AC) my only aim is to finish the race(AD) and complete the task(AE) the Lord Jesus has given me(AF)—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.(AG)

25 “Now I know that none of you among whom I have gone about preaching the kingdom(AH) will ever see me again.(AI) 26 Therefore, I declare to you today that I am innocent of the blood of any of you.(AJ) 27 For I have not hesitated to proclaim to you the whole will of God.(AK) 28 Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock(AL) of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers.(AM) Be shepherds of the church of God,[a](AN) which he bought(AO) with his own blood.[b](AP) 29 I know that after I leave, savage wolves(AQ) will come in among you and will not spare the flock.(AR) 30 Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples(AS) after them. 31 So be on your guard! Remember that for three years(AT) I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears.(AU)

32 “Now I commit you to God(AV) and to the word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance(AW) among all those who are sanctified.(AX) 33 I have not coveted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing.(AY) 34 You yourselves know that these hands of mine have supplied my own needs and the needs of my companions.(AZ) 35 In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’

36 When Paul had finished speaking, he knelt down with all of them and prayed.(BA) 37 They all wept as they embraced him and kissed him.(BB) 38 What grieved them most was his statement that they would never see his face again.(BC) Then they accompanied him to the ship.(BD)

On to Jerusalem

21 After we(BE) had torn ourselves away from them, we put out to sea and sailed straight to Kos. The next day we went to Rhodes and from there to Patara. We found a ship crossing over to Phoenicia,(BF) went on board and set sail. After sighting Cyprus and passing to the south of it, we sailed on to Syria.(BG) We landed at Tyre, where our ship was to unload its cargo. We sought out the disciples(BH) there and stayed with them seven days. Through the Spirit(BI) they urged Paul not to go on to Jerusalem. When it was time to leave, we left and continued on our way. All of them, including wives and children, accompanied us out of the city, and there on the beach we knelt to pray.(BJ) After saying goodbye to each other, we went aboard the ship, and they returned home.

We continued our voyage from Tyre(BK) and landed at Ptolemais, where we greeted the brothers and sisters(BL) and stayed with them for a day. Leaving the next day, we reached Caesarea(BM) and stayed at the house of Philip(BN) the evangelist,(BO) one of the Seven. He had four unmarried daughters who prophesied.(BP)

10 After we had been there a number of days, a prophet named Agabus(BQ) came down from Judea. 11 Coming over to us, he took Paul’s belt, tied his own hands and feet with it and said, “The Holy Spirit says,(BR) ‘In this way the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem will bind(BS) the owner of this belt and will hand him over to the Gentiles.’”(BT)

12 When we heard this, we and the people there pleaded with Paul not to go up to Jerusalem. 13 Then Paul answered, “Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die(BU) in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.”(BV) 14 When he would not be dissuaded, we gave up(BW) and said, “The Lord’s will be done.”(BX)

15 After this, we started on our way up to Jerusalem.(BY) 16 Some of the disciples from Caesarea(BZ) accompanied us and brought us to the home of Mnason, where we were to stay. He was a man from Cyprus(CA) and one of the early disciples.

Paul’s Arrival at Jerusalem

17 When we arrived at Jerusalem, the brothers and sisters(CB) received us warmly.(CC) 18 The next day Paul and the rest of us went to see James,(CD) and all the elders(CE) were present.
