7 CHÚA cho tôi thấy điều này. Ngài đang nắn nên những đàn châu chấu ngay khi hoa màu mới nẩy mầm. Đây là hoa màu gieo sau khi gặt xong phần thổ sản của nhà vua. 2 Sau khi châu chấu đã ăn sạch các loài cây cỏ trên đất, tôi kêu lên: “Lạy CHÚA, xin CHÚA tha thứ. Làm thể nào Gia-cốp sống nổi? Nó nhỏ yếu quá!” 3 CHÚA liền đổi ý. CHÚA phán: “Điều này sẽ không xảy ra.”

4 CHÚA cho tôi thấy điều này. CHÚA kêu gọi xét xử và đoán phạt bằng lửa. Lửa đốt cạn vực thẳm mênh mông và đang thiêu đốt đồng ruộng. 5 Tôi kêu lên: “Lạy CHÚA, Chúa của con, xin Chúa dừng tay. Làm thể nào Gia-cốp sống nổi? Nó nhỏ yếu quá!” 6 CHÚA liền đổi ý. CHÚA phán: “Điều này cũng sẽ không xảy ra nữa.”

7 Ngài cho tôi thấy điều này. CHÚA đứng cạnh bức tường thẳng đứng, tay cầm dây doi. 8 CHÚA hỏi tôi: “A-mốt, con thấy gì?” Tôi thưa: “Một dây dọi.” CHÚA tôi phán: “Này, Ta đặt một dây dọi giữa dân Ta, là dân Y-sơ-ra-ên. Ta không thể bỏ qua được nữa.
9 Các bàn thờ trên các nơi cao của Y-sác sẽ điêu tàn,
Các miếu thánh của Y-sơ-ra-ên sẽ hoang vu,
Và Ta sẽ cầm gươm dấy lên nghịch lại nhà Giê-rô-bô-am.”

10 Thầy tế lễ A-ma-xia ở Bê-tên sai người báo cáo lên Giê-rô-bô-am, vua Y-sơ-ra-ên: “A-mốt âm mưu phản nghịch bệ hạ ngay giữa vòng dân Y-sơ-ra-ên. Đất nước này không thể chứa nổi tất cả những lời ông ta nói. 11 A-mốt nói thế này:
Vua Giê-rô-bô-am sẽ chết vì lưỡi gươm,
Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên chắc chắn sẽ bị đày
Xa khỏi quê hương.”
12 A-ma-xia nói với A-mốt: “Này nhà tiên kiến, hãy mau rời khỏi đây. Hãy trở về xứ Giu-đa, sinh sống tại đó, và nói tiên tri tại đó. 13 Đừng nói tiên tri tại Bê-tên nữa, vì đây là Nơi Thánh của vua, và cũng là đền thờ của vương quốc nữa.” 14 A-mốt đáp lời A-ma-xia: “Ta vốn không phải là tiên tri, cũng không phải là con trai của một tiên tri. Ta vốn là người nuôi bò, nuôi cừu và chăm sóc quả sung. 15 Nhưng CHÚA đã bắt ta ra khỏi việc chăn bầy, và bảo ta: ‘Hãy đi và nói tiên tri cho dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, là dân của Ta.’ 16 Và giờ đây, hãy nghe lời CHÚA.” Ngươi có bảo ta:
“Chớ nói tiên tri cho dân Y-sơ-ra-ên,
Cũng đừng rao giảng nghịch lại nhà Y-sác.”
17 Cho nên, đây là lời CHÚA phán:
“Vợ ngươi sẽ trở thành gái điếm trong thành này,
Các con trai con gái ngươi sẽ ngã dưới lưỡi gươm,
Người ta sẽ dùng dây đo chia đất ruộng ngươi,
Còn ngươi, ngươi sẽ chết nơi đất khách quê người.
Và dân Y-sơ-ra-ên chắc chắn sẽ bị đi đày
Xa khỏi quê hương.”

7 Chúa Hằng Hữu đã tỏ cho tôi thấy điều nầy: Này, Ngài đang dựng nên cào cào trong khi cỏ bắt đầu mọc lại, sau khi cỏ đã được cắt để nộp cho vua. 2 Khi nhìn thấy chúng ăn sạch các cỏ cây trong xứ, tôi thưa,
“Lạy Chúa Hằng Hữu, xin Ngài tha thứ, con van xin Ngài.
Làm sao Gia-cốp có thể đứng nổi?
Vì ông ấy quá nhỏ bé!”
3 Chúa đổi ý về việc ấy. Chúa phán, “Ðiều đó sẽ không xảy ra.”
4 Chúa Hằng Hữu đã tỏ cho tôi thấy điều nầy: Này, Chúa Hằng Hữu gọi lửa đoán phạt từ trời giáng xuống. Lửa ấy làm khô biển cả và thiêu rụi đất liền. 5 Thấy thế tôi thưa,
“Lạy Chúa Hằng Hữu, xin Ngài dừng lại, con van xin Ngài.
Làm sao Gia-cốp có thể đứng nổi?
Vì ông ấy quá nhỏ bé!”
6 Chúa đổi ý về việc ấy. Chúa Hằng Hữu phán, “Ðiều đó sẽ không xảy ra.”
7 Ngài đã tỏ cho tôi thấy điều nầy: Này, Chúa đang đứng bên cạnh một bức tường đã được dùng dây dọi để làm chuẩn khi xây, lúc ấy trong tay Ngài đang cầm một dây dọi.
8 Chúa hỏi tôi, “A-mốt, ngươi thấy gì?”
Tôi đáp, “Thưa một dây dọi.”
Bấy giờ Chúa phán,
“Nầy, Ta sẽ treo một dây dọi để làm chuẩn ở giữa dân I-sơ-ra-ên của Ta;
Ta sẽ không bỏ qua cho chúng nữa.
9 Các nơi cao để thờ tự của I-sác sẽ trở nên tiêu điều vắng vẻ;
Các nơi thánh của I-sơ-ra-ên sẽ bị bỏ cho hoang vu;
Ta sẽ đứng dậy và dùng gươm chống lại nhà của Giê-rô-bô-am.”
A-mốt Bị Tố Cáo Với Vua
10 Bấy giờ A-ma-xi-a tư tế ở Bê-tên gởi báo cáo đến Giê-rô-bô-am vua I-sơ-ra-ên và tố cáo rằng, “A-mốt đã âm mưu chống lại ngài ngay giữa nhà I-sơ-ra-ên. Ðất nước nầy không thể nào chịu nổi mọi lời ông ấy nói, 11 vì A-mốt đã nói rằng,
‘Giê-rô-bô-am sẽ bị giết bằng gươm,
Và I-sơ-ra-ên sẽ bị lưu đày biệt xứ.’”
12 Sau đó A-ma-xi-a nói với A-mốt, “Hỡi nhà tiên kiến, ông hãy đi mau, ông hãy chạy qua đất Giu-đa để giữ mạng. Hãy đến đó kiếm ăn, và hãy đến đó nói tiên tri, 13 chứ đừng nói tiên tri ở Bê-tên nữa, vì nơi đây là thánh địa của vua, nơi đây là trung tâm thờ phượng của vương quốc.”
14 Bấy giờ A-mốt đáp với A-ma-xi-a, “Tôi không phải là một nhà tiên tri. Tôi cũng không là đồ đệ[a] của một vị tiên tri nào, nhưng tôi chỉ là một người chăn bầy súc vật, một nông dân chăm sóc vườn sung, 15 nhưng Chúa đã bắt lấy tôi trong khi tôi theo canh giữ đàn súc vật, và Chúa đã phán với tôi, ‘Hãy đi, hãy nói tiên tri về dân I-sơ-ra-ên của Ta.’ 16 Vậy, bây giờ xin ông hãy nghe lời của Chúa:
Ông bảo, ‘Ðừng nói tiên tri nghịch lại I-sơ-ra-ên,
Ðừng rao giảng những sứ điệp chống lại nhà I-sác.’
17 Vì vậy Chúa phán thế nầy,
‘Vợ ngươi sẽ trở thành một gái điếm trong thành;
Các con trai và các con gái của ngươi sẽ bị giết bằng gươm;
Sản nghiệp của ngươi sẽ bị căng dây đo để chia cho những kẻ khác;
Còn bản thân ngươi, ngươi sẽ chết trong một xứ ô uế,
Và dân I-sơ-ra-ên chắc chắn sẽ bị lưu đày biệt xứ.’”

Locusts, Fire and a Plumb Line
7 This is what the Sovereign Lord showed me:(A) He was preparing swarms of locusts(B) after the king’s share had been harvested and just as the late crops were coming up. 2 When they had stripped the land clean,(C) I cried out, “Sovereign Lord, forgive! How can Jacob survive?(D) He is so small!(E)”
3 So the Lord relented.(F)
“This will not happen,” the Lord said.(G)
4 This is what the Sovereign Lord showed me: The Sovereign Lord was calling for judgment by fire;(H) it dried up the great deep and devoured(I) the land. 5 Then I cried out, “Sovereign Lord, I beg you, stop! How can Jacob survive? He is so small!(J)”
6 So the Lord relented.(K)
“This will not happen either,” the Sovereign Lord said.(L)
7 This is what he showed me: The Lord was standing by a wall that had been built true to plumb,[a] with a plumb line[b] in his hand. 8 And the Lord asked me, “What do you see,(M) Amos?(N)”
“A plumb line,(O)” I replied.
Then the Lord said, “Look, I am setting a plumb line among my people Israel; I will spare them no longer.(P)
9 “The high places(Q) of Isaac will be destroyed
and the sanctuaries(R) of Israel will be ruined;
with my sword I will rise against the house of Jeroboam.(S)”
Amos and Amaziah
10 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel(T) sent a message to Jeroboam(U) king of Israel: “Amos is raising a conspiracy(V) against you in the very heart of Israel. The land cannot bear all his words.(W) 11 For this is what Amos is saying:
“‘Jeroboam will die by the sword,
and Israel will surely go into exile,(X)
away from their native land.’”(Y)
12 Then Amaziah said to Amos, “Get out, you seer!(Z) Go back to the land of Judah. Earn your bread there and do your prophesying there.(AA) 13 Don’t prophesy anymore at Bethel,(AB) because this is the king’s sanctuary and the temple(AC) of the kingdom.(AD)”
14 Amos answered Amaziah, “I was neither a prophet(AE) nor the son of a prophet, but I was a shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore-fig trees.(AF) 15 But the Lord took me from tending the flock(AG) and said to me, ‘Go,(AH) prophesy(AI) to my people Israel.’(AJ) 16 Now then, hear(AK) the word of the Lord. You say,
“‘Do not prophesy against(AL) Israel,
and stop preaching against the descendants of Isaac.’
17 “Therefore this is what the Lord says:

7 Thus hath the Lord God shewed unto me; and, behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, lo, it was the latter growth after the king's mowings.
2 And it came to pass, that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord God, forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.
3 The Lord repented for this: It shall not be, saith the Lord.
4 Thus hath the Lord God shewed unto me: and, behold, the Lord God called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part.
5 Then said I, O Lord God, cease, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.
6 The Lord repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord God.
7 Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.
8 And the Lord said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more:
9 And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.
10 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words.
11 For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land.
12 Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:
13 But prophesy not again any more at Bethel: for it is the king's chapel, and it is the king's court.
14 Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:
15 And the Lord took me as I followed the flock, and the Lord said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.
16 Now therefore hear thou the word of the Lord: Thou sayest, Prophesy not against Israel, and drop not thy word against the house of Isaac.
17 Therefore thus saith the Lord; Thy wife shall be an harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line; and thou shalt die in a polluted land: and Israel shall surely go into captivity forth of his land.
