Andra budet: Du ska inte tillverka några avgudar

12 Detta är de lagar och föreskrifter som ni ska lyda i det land som Herren, dina förfäders Gud, har gett dig att ta i besittning för all framtid; följ dem så länge ni lever på jorden:

Bara en enda plats för gudstjänsten

2 Förstör grundligt alla de platser där de folk ni fördriver tillber sina gudar på höga berg och kullar och under alla grönskande träd. 3 Bryt ner deras altaren, slå sönder deras stenstoder, bränn upp deras asherapålar[a] och hugg ner deras avgudabilder! Lämna ingenting kvar som kan påminna om dem på dessa platser!

4 Ni ska inte tillbe Herren, er Gud, på samma sätt som de. 5 Istället ska ni samlas på en plats som Herren, er Gud, själv kommer att välja ut åt sig i någon av era stammar, en plats där hans namn ska bo. Dit ska du gå. 6 Där ska ni bära fram era brännoffer och slaktoffer, ert tionde och era personliga gåvor, era löftesoffer, era frivilliga offer och de förstfödda djuren från er boskap och era hjordar. 7 Där ska ni och era familjer äta[b] och fira högtid inför Herren, er Gud, och glädjas över resultatet av ert arbete och den välsignelse ni fått från Herren, er Gud.

8 Ni ska inte längre göra som vi gör idag. Nu gör var och en som han själv vill, 9 eftersom ni ännu inte har nått den viloplats som Herren, din Gud, vill ge dig. 10 När ni har gått över Jordan och bosatt er i det land som Herren, er Gud, vill ger er och han har gett er ro för alla era fiender och ni lever i trygghet, 11 då ska Herren, er Gud, utse en plats för sitt namns boning. Till den platsen ska ni bära fram de gåvor jag ger befallning om: era brännoffer och slaktoffer, ert tionde och era personliga gåvor, samt alla de utvalda löftesoffer ni lovat Herren. 12 Där ska ni glädjas inför Herren med era söner och döttrar och slavar och slavinnor, likaså med leviterna som bor i era städer. De har ju inte fått något eget område i landet.

13 Du ska inte offra dina brännoffer var som helst, 14 utan bara på den plats som Herren väljer bland en av era stammar. Där ska du göra allt det som jag befaller dig.

15 Om du däremot vill slakta och äta djur på vanligt sätt, då kan du slakta dem var som helst i dina städer. Ät så mycket kött du vill, för Herren ska välsigna dig med sådant. De som är orena[c] får också äta av det som man äter gasell eller hjort. 16 Du får dock inte äta blodet. Häll ut det på marken som vatten.

17 I dina städer får du inte äta vare sig tiondet av säden, vinet eller oljan eller det förstfödda från din boskap eller dina hjordar eller något du har lovat att ge och inte heller dina frivilliga offer eller personliga offer. 18 Allt detta ska du, din son och dotter, din slav och slavinna och leviterna i dina städer äta inför Herren, din Gud, på den plats han väljer ut åt sig. Gläd dig inför Herren, din Gud, över resultatet av ditt arbete. 19 Leviterna får du aldrig glömma bort så länge du lever i landet.

20 När Herren, din Gud, har utvidgat dina gränser så som han har lovat och du får lust att äta kött, så ät så mycket du vill. 21 Om den plats Herren väljer ut som sin ligger alltför långt bort från din boplats, kan du slakta kor och får som Herren har gett dig så som jag har befallt dig och äta dem där du bor så mycket du vill. 22 Ät dem som du äter gasell och hjort. Även de som inte är rena kan äta dem. 23 Det enda förbehållet är att du aldrig får äta blodet, för livet är i blodet och du får inte äta livet tillsammans med köttet. 24 Ät alltså inte blodet. Häll ut blodet på marken som vatten. 25 Ät det inte! Då kommer allt att gå väl för dig och dina barn, eftersom du gör det som är rätt inför Herren. 26 Det är bara dina heliga gåvor och dina löftesoffer som du måste ta med dig till den plats Herren väljer ut. 27 Dina brännoffer, köttet och blodet, ska du offra på Herrens, din Guds, altare. Blodet från offret ska du hälla ut över Herrens, din Guds, altare, men köttet får du äta.

28 Var noga med att följa alla dessa föreskrifter. Om du gör det som är gott och rätt i Herrens, din Guds, ögon, kommer det alltid att gå väl för dig och dina barn.

29 Herren, din Gud, ska förinta folken i det land dit du kommer och driva undan dem för dig. Men när du har drivit bort dem och bosatt dig i deras land, 30 ska du inte vara nyfiken på deras gudar och gå i deras fälla som utrotades för din skull. Fråga inte: ”Hur tillbad de här folken sina gudar? Jag vill göra på samma sätt.” 31 Du får inte tillbe Herren, din Gud, på det sättet. I sin tillbedjan har dessa folk gjort avskyvärda saker som Herren hatar. De har till och med bränt upp sina söner och döttrar som offer till sina gudar. 32 Lyd alla de bud jag ger er! Lägg inte till något och dra inte heller bort något från dem.

Gudstjänst på utvald plats

12 Detta är de stadgar och föreskrifter som ni ska vara noga med att följa i det land, som Herren, dina fäders Gud, har gett dig till besittning, så länge ni lever på jorden. 2 Ni ska i grund förstöra alla de platser där de folk som ni fördriver har tillbett sina gudar, på höga berg och höjder eller under lummiga träd. 3 (A) Ni ska bryta ner deras altaren, slå sönder deras stoder och bränna upp deras asherapålar i eld, hugga ner deras avgudabilder och utplåna deras namn från sådana platser. 4 Ni ska inte tjäna Herren er Gud på deras sätt, 5 (B) utan den plats som Herren er Gud utväljer bland alla era stammar för att där fästa sitt namn, denna hans boning ska ni söka och dit ska du gå. 6 Dit ska ni föra era brännoffer och slaktoffer, ert tionde, och era händers bidrag, era löftesoffer[a] och frivilliga offer och det förstfödda av era kor och får. 7 Och där ska ni äta inför Herren er Guds ansikte och glädja er med ert husfolk över allt ni förvärvat, det som Herren din Gud har välsignat dig med.

8 Ni ska då inte göra allt som vi i dag gör här, där var och en gör vad han själv anser vara rätt. 9 Ni har ju ännu inte kommit in i den vila och den arvedel som Herren din Gud vill ge dig. 10 Men när ni har gått över Jordan och bor i det land som Herren er Gud vill ge er till arvedel och när han har låtit er få ro för alla era fiender runt omkring och ni bor i trygghet, 11 då ska ni föra allt som jag befaller er till den plats som Herren er Gud utväljer till boning åt sitt namn: era brännoffer och slaktoffer, ert tionde, era händers bidrag och alla de utvalda löftesoffer som ni ger Herren löfte om. 12 (C) Där ska ni glädja er inför Herren er Guds ansikte med era söner och döttrar, tjänare och tjänarinnor och med leviten som bor inom era portar, för han har ju ingen egen lott eller arvedel med er.

13 Ta dig till vara så att du inte offrar dina brännoffer på vilken plats som helst. 14 Endast där, på den plats Herren utväljer inom en av dina stammar, ska du offra dina brännoffer, och där ska du göra allt som jag befaller dig. 15 Däremot får du slakta och äta kött så mycket du önskar inom alla dina städer, allt efter den välsignelse som Herren din Gud ger dig. Både den som är oren och den som är ren får äta av det, som vore det kött av gasell eller hjort. 16 (D) Men blodet får ni inte förtära. Det ska du hälla ut på marken som vatten.

17 Du får inte inom dina portar äta tionden av din säd, ditt vin och din olja och inte heller det förstfödda av dina kor och får eller något av de löftesoffer som du gett löfte om eller av dina frivilliga offer eller av dina händers bidrag. 18 (E) På den plats som Herren din Gud utväljer ska du äta det inför Herren din Guds ansikte tillsammans med din son och dotter, din tjänare och tjänarinna och med leviten som bor inom dina portar. Och du ska glädja dig inför Herren din Guds ansikte över allt du förvärvat. 19 (F) Se till att du inte glömmer bort leviten så länge du lever i ditt land.

20 (G) När Herren din Gud har utvidgat ditt område så som han har lovat dig, och du tänker: ”Jag vill äta kött”, eftersom du har lust att äta kött, så får du äta kött så mycket du vill. 21 Om den plats som Herren din Gud utväljer till att där fästa sitt namn ligger för långt bort för dig, så kan du enligt min befallning till dig slakta av de kor och får som Herren har gett dig och äta av det inom dina portar, så mycket du vill. 22 Men du ska äta det så som man äter kött av gasell eller hjort[b]. Både den som är oren och den som är ren får äta av det. 23 (H) Men se till att du inte äter blodet, för blodet är livet, och du får inte äta livet tillsammans med köttet. 24 Du får inte äta det. Du ska hälla ut det på marken som vatten. 25 Ät det inte, så ska det gå väl för dig och dina barn efter dig, när du gör det som är rätt i Herrens ögon.

26 Men de heliga gåvor som du vill bära fram, och dina löftesoffer, ska du ta med dig till den plats som Herren utväljer. 27 Av dina brännoffer ska du offra köttet och blodet på Herren din Guds altare. Av dina slaktoffer ska blodet utgjutas på Herren din Guds altare. Men köttet får du äta.

28 Var noga med att lyda alla dessa bud som jag ger dig, så att det till evig tid går väl för dig och dina barn efter dig, när du gör det som är gott och rätt i Herren din Guds ögon.

Varning för avgudadyrkan

29 När Herren din Gud har utrotat de hednafolk som du nu kommer till för att fördriva, och du har drivit bort dem och bor i deras land, 30 (I) se då till att du inte lockas till att följa deras seder, sedan de blivit röjda ur vägen för dig. Fråga inte efter deras gudar, så att du säger: ”Hur dyrkade dessa folk sina gudar? Jag vill göra på samma sätt.” 31 Så ska inte du göra när du tillber Herren din Gud, eftersom allt som Herren avskyr och hatar har de gjort till sina gudars ära. Till och med sina söner och döttrar bränner de upp i eld åt sina gudar.

32 (J) Allt som jag befaller er ska ni vara noga med att följa. Du ska inte lägga något till det och inte ta något därifrån.

The Proper Place to Worship

12 Here are the laws and rules you must faithfully obey in the land that Yahweh Elohim of your ancestors is giving you as your own. You must obey them as long as you live in the land.

2 Completely destroy all the worship sites on the high mountains, on the hills, and under every large tree. The people you’re forcing out worship their gods in these places. 3 Tear down their altars, crush their sacred stones, burn their poles dedicated to the goddess Asherah, cut down their idols, and wipe out the names of their gods from those places.

4 Never worship Yahweh your Elohim in the way they worship their gods. 5 Yahweh your Elohim will choose a place out of all your tribes to live and put his name. Go there and worship him. 6 Bring him your burnt offerings, your sacrifices, one-tenth of your income, your contributions, the offerings you vow to bring, your freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your cattle, sheep, and goats. 7 There, in the presence of Yahweh your Elohim, you and your families will eat and enjoy everything you’ve worked for, because Yahweh your Elohim has blessed you.

8 Never worship in the way that it’s being done here today, where everyone does whatever he considers right. 9 Up until now you haven’t come to your place of rest, the property Yahweh your Elohim is giving you. 10 But you will cross the Jordan River and settle in the land Yahweh your Elohim is giving you as your own property. He will give you peace from all your enemies around you so that you will live securely. 11 Then Yahweh your Elohim will choose a place where his name will live. You must bring everything I command you to that place. Bring your burnt offerings, your sacrifices, one-tenth of your income, your contributions, and all the best offerings you vow to bring to Yahweh. 12 Enjoy yourselves in the presence of Yahweh your Elohim along with your sons, daughters, male and female slaves, and the Levites. (The Levites live in your cities because they have no land of their own as you have.) 13 Be careful that you don’t sacrifice your burnt offerings wherever you want. 14 Instead, sacrifice them only at the place that Yahweh will choose in one of your tribes. There you must do everything I command you.

15 In whatever city you live, you may slaughter and eat as much meat as you want from what Yahweh your Elohim has blessed you with. Clean and unclean[a] people may eat it as if they were eating a gazelle or a deer. 16 But never eat the blood. Pour it on the ground like water. 17 You may not eat the Lord’s offerings in your cities. Those offerings are: one-tenth of your grain, new wine, and olive oil; the firstborn of your cattle, sheep, or goats; the offerings you vow to bring; your freewill offerings; and your contributions. 18 Instead, you, your sons and daughters, male and female slaves, and the Levites who live in your cities must eat these in the presence of Yahweh your Elohim at the place Yahweh your Elohim will choose. There in the presence of Yahweh your Elohim enjoy everything you’ve worked for. 19 Don’t forget to take care of the Levites as long as you live in your land.

20 Yahweh your Elohim will expand your country’s borders as he promised. You will say, “I’m hungry for meat.” Then eat as much meat as you want. 21 If the place Yahweh your Elohim chooses to put his name is too far away from you, you may slaughter an animal from the herds or flocks that Yahweh has given you. Eat as much as you want in your city. I have commanded you to do this. 22 Eat it as you would eat a gazelle or a deer: Clean and unclean people may eat it together. 23 However, be sure you never eat blood, because blood contains life. Never eat the life with the meat. 24 Never eat blood. Pour it on the ground like water. 25 If you don’t eat blood, things will go well for you and your descendants. You will be doing what Yahweh considers right.

26 Take the holy things and the offerings you have vowed to bring, and go to the place Yahweh will choose. 27 Sacrifice the meat and the blood of your burnt offerings on the altar of Yahweh your Elohim. The blood of your sacrifices is to be poured out beside the altar of Yahweh your Elohim, but you may eat the meat. 28 Be sure you obey all these instructions I’m giving you. Then things will always go well for you and your descendants because you will be doing what Yahweh your Elohim considers good and right.

29 Yahweh your Elohim will destroy the nations where you’re going and force them out of your way. You will take possession of their land and live there. 30 After they’ve been destroyed, be careful you aren’t tempted to follow their customs. Don’t even ask about their gods and say, “How did these people worship their gods? We want to do what they did.” 31 Never worship Yahweh your Elohim in the way they worship their gods, because everything they do for their gods is disgusting to Yahweh. He hates it! They even burn their sons and daughters as sacrifices to their gods.[b]

32 Be sure to do everything I command you. Never add anything to it or take anything away from it.

The One Place of Worship

12 These are the decrees(A) and laws you must be careful to follow in the land that the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has given you to possess—as long as you live in the land.(B) 2 Destroy completely all the places on the high mountains,(C) on the hills and under every spreading tree,(D) where the nations you are dispossessing worship their gods. 3 Break down their altars, smash(E) their sacred stones and burn(F) their Asherah(G) poles in the fire; cut down the idols of their gods and wipe out their names(H) from those places.

4 You must not worship the Lord your God in their way.(I) 5 But you are to seek the place the Lord your God will choose from among all your tribes to put his Name(J) there for his dwelling.(K) To that place you must go; 6 there bring your burnt offerings and sacrifices, your tithes(L) and special gifts, what you have vowed(M) to give and your freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks.(N) 7 There, in the presence(O) of the Lord your God, you and your families shall eat and shall rejoice(P) in everything you have put your hand to, because the Lord your God has blessed you.

8 You are not to do as we do here today, everyone doing as they see fit,(Q) 9 since you have not yet reached the resting place(R) and the inheritance(S) the Lord your God is giving you. 10 But you will cross the Jordan and settle in the land the Lord your God is giving(T) you as an inheritance, and he will give you rest(U) from all your enemies around you so that you will live in safety. 11 Then to the place the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his Name(V)—there you are to bring everything I command you: your burnt offerings and sacrifices, your tithes and special gifts, and all the choice possessions you have vowed to the Lord.(W) 12 And there rejoice(X) before the Lord your God—you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levites(Y) from your towns who have no allotment or inheritance(Z) of their own. 13 Be careful not to sacrifice your burnt offerings anywhere you please.(AA) 14 Offer them only at the place the Lord will choose(AB) in one of your tribes, and there observe everything I command you.

15 Nevertheless, you may slaughter your animals in any of your towns and eat as much of the meat as you want, as if it were gazelle or deer,(AC) according to the blessing the Lord your God gives you. Both the ceremonially unclean and the clean may eat it. 16 But you must not eat the blood;(AD) pour(AE) it out on the ground like water.(AF) 17 You must not eat in your own towns the tithe(AG) of your grain and new wine and olive oil,(AH) or the firstborn of your herds and flocks, or whatever you have vowed to give,(AI) or your freewill offerings or special gifts.(AJ) 18 Instead, you are to eat(AK) them in the presence of the Lord your God at the place the Lord your God will choose(AL)—you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levites from your towns—and you are to rejoice(AM) before the Lord your God in everything you put your hand to. 19 Be careful not to neglect the Levites(AN) as long as you live in your land.(AO)

20 When the Lord your God has enlarged your territory(AP) as he promised(AQ) you, and you crave meat(AR) and say, “I would like some meat,” then you may eat as much of it as you want. 21 If the place where the Lord your God chooses to put his Name(AS) is too far away from you, you may slaughter animals from the herds and flocks the Lord has given you, as I have commanded you, and in your own towns you may eat as much of them as you want.(AT) 22 Eat them as you would gazelle or deer.(AU) Both the ceremonially unclean and the clean may eat. 23 But be sure you do not eat the blood,(AV) because the blood is the life, and you must not eat the life with the meat.(AW) 24 You must not eat the blood; pour it out on the ground like water.(AX) 25 Do not eat it, so that it may go well(AY) with you and your children after you, because you will be doing what is right(AZ) in the eyes of the Lord.

26 But take your consecrated things and whatever you have vowed to give,(BA) and go to the place the Lord will choose. 27 Present your burnt offerings(BB) on the altar of the Lord your God, both the meat and the blood. The blood of your sacrifices must be poured beside the altar of the Lord your God, but you may eat(BC) the meat. 28 Be careful to obey all these regulations I am giving you, so that it may always go well(BD) with you and your children after you, because you will be doing what is good and right in the eyes of the Lord your God.

29 The Lord your God will cut off(BE) before you the nations you are about to invade and dispossess. But when you have driven them out and settled in their land,(BF) 30 and after they have been destroyed before you, be careful not to be ensnared(BG) by inquiring about their gods, saying, “How do these nations serve their gods? We will do the same.”(BH) 31 You must not worship the Lord your God in their way, because in worshiping their gods, they do all kinds of detestable things the Lord hates.(BI) They even burn their sons(BJ) and daughters in the fire as sacrifices to their gods.(BK)

32 See that you do all I command you; do not add(BL) to it or take away from it.[a]
