Israel har ingen förtjänst
9 Hör, Israel! Du går i dag över Jordan för att komma och lägga under dig hednafolk, större och mäktigare än du, med stora städer befästa upp mot himlen. 2 Du känner anakiternas stora och resliga folk och du har hört att man säger om dem: "Vem kan stå emot Anaks barn?" 3 Därför skall du i dag veta att Herren, din Gud, är den som går framför dig som en förtärande eld. Han skall förgöra dem och kuva dem för dig, och du skall driva bort dem och utrota dem snabbt, så som Herren har lovat dig.
4 När Herren, din Gud, driver undan dem för dig, får du inte säga i ditt hjärta: "För min rättfärdighets skull har Herren låtit mig komma in i detta land för att ta det i besittning." Ty det är ogudaktigheten hos dessa folk som gör att Herren driver bort dem för dig. 5 Det är inte genom din rättfärdighet eller ditt hjärtas rättsinnighet som du går för att ta deras land i besittning, utan det är till följd av ogudaktigheten hos dessa folk som Herren, din Gud, driver bort dem för dig och så uppfyller vad han med ed har lovat dina fäder Abraham, Isak och Jakob.
6 Du skall veta att det inte är för din rättfärdighets skull som Herren, din Gud, har gett dig detta goda land till besittning, ty du är ett hårdnackat folk.
Guldkalven
7 Kom ihåg och glöm aldrig, hur du i öknen väckte Herrens, din Guds, vrede. Från den dag då du drog ut ur Egyptens land, till dess ni kom till denna plats, har ni varit upproriska mot Herren. 8 Också vid Horeb väckte ni Herrens vrede, och Herren blev förbittrad på er, så att han ville förgöra er. 9 När jag hade gått upp på berget för att ta emot stentavlorna, tavlorna till det förbund som Herren hade slutit med er, stannade jag på berget i fyrtio dagar och fyrtio nätter utan att äta eller dricka. 10 Och Herren gav mig de två stentavlorna, där Gud med sitt finger hade skrivit alla de ord som Herren hade talat till er på berget ur elden, den dag då ni var samlade där.
11 När de fyrtio dagarna och fyrtio nätterna hade gått, gav Herren mig de båda stentavlorna, förbundets tavlor. 12 Och han sade till mig: "Stig upp och gå snabbt ner härifrån, ty ditt folk, som du har fört ut ur Egypten, har handlat fördärvligt. De har snabbt vikit av från den väg som jag befallde dem att gå och de har gjort sig en gjuten avgudabild." 13 Och Herren sade till mig: "Jag har sett och funnit att detta folk är ett hårdnackat folk. 14 Lämna mig så att jag kan förgöra dem och utplåna deras namn under himlen. Dig vill jag sedan göra till ett folk som är mäktigare och större än detta."
15 Då vände jag om och gick ner från berget som brann i eld, och förbundets två tavlor hade jag i mina båda händer. 16 Jag fick då se att ni hade syndat mot Herren, er Gud. Ni hade gjort åt er en gjuten kalv. Ni hade snabbt vikit av från den väg som Herren hade befallt er att gå. 17 Jag grep de två tavlorna och slungade dem ifrån mig med båda händerna och slog sönder dem inför era ögon. 18 Och jag föll ner inför Herrens ansikte, och låg så liksom förra gången, i fyrtio dagar och fyrtio nätter utan att äta eller dricka, för all den synds skull som ni hade begått genom att göra det som var ont i Herrens ögon så att han blev vred. 19 Ty jag fruktade för den vrede och förbittring mot er som Herren blivit uppfylld av, så att han ville förgöra er. Men Herren lyssnade till mig även den gången.
20 Också på Aron blev Herren mycket vred så att han ville förgöra honom, och jag bad då också för Aron. 21 Sedan tog jag er synd, kalven som ni hade gjort, och jag brände upp den i eld och krossade den till fint stoft och detta kastade jag i bäcken som flöt ner från berget.
22 I Tabeera, i Massa och i Kibrot-Hattaava väckte ni också Herrens vrede. 23 När Herren sände er från Kadesh-Barnea och sade: "Drag upp och erövra det land, som jag har givit er", då var ni upproriska mot befallningen från Herren, er Gud, och trodde honom inte och lyssnade inte på hans röst. 24 Upproriska har ni varit mot Herren ända från den dag då jag lärde känna er.
25 Och jag föll ner inför Herrens ansikte och låg så de fyrtio dagarna och de fyrtio nätterna, för Herren hade sagt att han ville förgöra er. 26 Jag bad till Herren: Herre Herre, förgör inte ditt folk och din arvedel, som du har friköpt med din stora makt och som du med stark hand har fört ut ur Egypten. 27 Tänk på dina tjänare Abraham, Isak och Jakob, och se inte på detta folks hårdhet, ogudaktighet och synd. 28 Annars kommer man att säga i det land som du förde oss ut från: "Därför att Herren inte kunde föra dem in i det land som han hade lovat åt dem och därför att han hatade dem, förde han ut dem för att döda dem i öknen." 29 De är ju ditt folk och din arvedel som du har fört ut med din stora kraft och din uträckta arm.

Glöm inte att Gud har hjälpt dig
1-2 Lyssna till mig, Israel! I dag ska du gå över floden Jordan och fördriva folken på andra sidan. De är mycket större och mäktigare än du! De bor i städer med väldiga murar. Där finns också de välkända jättarna, anakiterna, som ingen kan stå emot.
3 Men Herren, din Gud, ska gå före dig som en förtärande eld och förgöra dem, så att du snabbt ska kunna besegra dem och driva ut dem.
4 När sedan Herren har gjort allt detta för dig, ska du inte säga: 'Herren hjälpte mig därför att jag är så rättfärdig!' Nej, det är på grund av de andra folkens ogudaktighet som han gör det.
5 Det är inte alls för att du är ett så enastående folk, som Herren driver bort dem och sätter dig i deras ställe. Nej, det är för att de är så ogudaktiga och för att Gud vill uppfylla löftet till era förfäder, Abraham, Isak och Jakob.
6 Jag säger det igen: Herren, din Gud, ger dig inte detta härliga land därför att du är god. Sanningen är att du är ett envist folk.
7 Tänk på och glöm aldrig hur du många gånger har fått Herren, din Gud, att bli förargad i öknen, från den dag du lämnade Egypten till nu! Hela tiden har du varit upprorisk mot honom.
8 Tänk på hur du gjorde honom rasande vid berget Horeb! Han var beredd att utplåna dig.
9 När jag gick upp på berget för att ta emot stentavlorna där alla lagar och regler fanns nedtecknade, som rör det förbund som Herren upprättat med dig, blev jag kvar där i fyrtio dagar och fyrtio nätter. Jag varken åt eller drack under hela denna tid.
10-11 Efter dessa fyrtio dygn gav Herren mig stentavlorna med de budord som ni själva hört honom ge er när ni hörde hans röst ur elden som täckte berget.
12 Han sa åt mig att skynda mig ner från berget, därför att folket som jag hade lett ut ur Egypten hade orenat sig och redan vänt sig bort från Guds lagar och gjort sig en avgud av gjuten metall.
13-14 'Lämna mig ifred nu, så att jag kan förgöra detta onda, envisa folk!' sa Herren till mig. 'Jag ska utplåna dess namn, och sedan ska jag göra ett mäktigt folk av dig, större än de skulle ha blivit.'
15 Jag gick ner från berget medan det var höljt i eld. De båda tavlorna med budorden höll jag i mina händer.
16 När jag kom ner fick jag se den kalv som ni hade gjort i er fruktansvärda synd mot Herren, er Gud. Tänk så snabbt ni vände er bort från honom!
17 Jag lyfte tavlorna högt över huvudet och krossade dem mot marken! Ja, jag slog sönder dem framför ögonen på er!
18 Sedan låg jag inför Herrens ansikte i ytterligare fyrtio dagar och nätter, utan bröd eller vatten, för ni hade gjort det Herren hatade mest av allt och på så sätt orsakat hans vrede.
19 Jag var fruktansvärt rädd för er skull. Herren var beredd att förgöra er, men han lyssnade på mig också den gången.
20 Aron var i stor fara, därför att Herren var arg på honom. Men jag bad för honom, och Herren skonade honom.
21 Jag tog er synd, kalven ni hade gjort, och brände upp den och krossade den till fint damm och kastade detta i det vatten som rann ner från berget.
22 I Tabeera och i Massa och likaså i Kibrot-Hattaava, hände samma sak. Herren blev rasande på er.
23 Och när Herren vid Kades-Barnea sa till er att gå in i landet, som han hade gett er, satte ni er på tvären och ville inte tro att han skulle hjälpa er. Ni vägrade att lyda honom.
24 Ja, ni har satt er upp mot Herren från första dagen jag lärde känna er.
25 Det var därför jag låg där inför honom i fyrtio dagar och nätter, när han var beredd att förgöra er.
26 Jag bad honom att inte utplåna sitt eget folk. Jag sa: 'Det är ditt arv, som räddats från Egypten genom din väldiga makt och underbara styrka.
27 Kom ihåg dina löften till dina tjänare Abraham, Isak och Jakob! Ha överseende med detta hårda folks ondska och synd,
28 för om du utrotar dem kommer egyptierna att säga att det hände därför att Herren inte kunde leda dem in i landet som han hade lovat dem, eller att han utrotat dem därför att han hatade dem och att han ledde ut dem i öknen för att döda dem.
29 Herre, de är ju ditt folk, ditt arv, som du har lett ut ur Egypten genom din väldiga makt och starka arm.'

9 Écoute, Israël! Tu vas aujourd'hui passer le Jourdain, pour te rendre maître de nations plus grandes et plus puissantes que toi, de villes grandes et fortifiées jusqu'au ciel,
2 d'un peuple grand et de haute taille, les enfants d'Anak, que tu connais, et dont tu as entendu dire: Qui pourra tenir contre les enfants d'Anak?
3 Sache aujourd'hui que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, marchera lui-même devant toi comme un feu dévorant, c'est lui qui les détruira, qui les humiliera devant toi; et tu les chasseras, tu les feras périr promptement, comme l'Éternel te l'a dit.
4 Lorsque l'Éternel, ton Dieu, les chassera devant toi, ne dis pas en ton coeur: C'est à cause de ma justice que l'Éternel me fait entrer en possession de ce pays. Car c'est à cause de la méchanceté de ces nations que l'Éternel les chasse devant toi.
5 Non, ce n'est point à cause de ta justice et de la droiture de ton coeur que tu entres en possession de leur pays; mais c'est à cause de la méchanceté de ces nations que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, les chasse devant toi, et c'est pour confirmer la parole que l'Éternel a jurée à tes pères, à Abraham, à Isaac et à Jacob.
6 Sache donc que ce n'est point à cause de ta justice que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne ce bon pays pour que tu le possèdes; car tu es un peuple au cou roide.
7 Souviens-toi, n'oublie pas de quelle manière tu as excité la colère de l'Éternel, ton Dieu, dans le désert. Depuis le jour où tu es sorti du pays d'Égypte jusqu'à votre arrivée dans ce lieu, vous avez été rebelles contre l'Éternel.
8 A Horeb, vous excitâtes la colère de l'Éternel; et l'Éternel s'irrita contre vous, et eut la pensée de vous détruire.
9 Lorsque je fus monté sur la montagne, pour prendre les tables de pierre, les tables de l'alliance que l'Éternel a traitée avec vous, je demeurai sur la montagne quarante jours et quarante nuits, sans manger de pain et sans boire d'eau;
10 et l'Éternel me donna les deux tables de pierre écrites du doigt de Dieu, et contenant toutes les paroles que l'Éternel vous avait dites sur la montagne, du milieu du feu, le jour de l'assemblée.
11 Ce fut au bout des quarante jours et des quarante nuits que l'Éternel me donna les deux tables de pierre, les tables de l'alliance.
12 L'Éternel me dit alors: Lève-toi, descends en hâte d'ici; car ton peuple, que tu as fait sortir d'Égypte, s'est corrompu. Ils se sont promptement écartés de la voie que je leur avais prescrite; ils se sont fait une image de fonte.
13 L'Éternel me dit: Je vois que ce peuple est un peuple au cou roide.
14 Laisse-moi les détruire et effacer leur nom de dessous les cieux; et je ferai de toi une nation plus puissante et plus nombreuse que ce peuple.
15 Je retournai et je descendis de la montagne tout en feu, les deux tables de l'alliance dans mes deux mains.
16 Je regardai, et voici, vous aviez péché contre l'Éternel, votre Dieu, vous vous étiez fait un veau de fonte, vous vous étiez promptement écartés de la voie que vous avait prescrite l'Éternel.
17 Je saisis les deux tables, je les jetai de mes mains, et je les brisai sous vos yeux.
18 Je me prosternai devant l'Éternel, comme auparavant, quarante jours et quarante nuits, sans manger de pain et sans boire d'eau, à cause de tous les péchés que vous aviez commis en faisant ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Éternel, pour l'irriter.
19 Car j'étais effrayé à la vue de la colère et de la fureur dont l'Éternel était animé contre vous jusqu'à vouloir vous détruire. Mais l'Éternel m'exauça encore cette fois.
20 L'Éternel était aussi très irrité contre Aaron, qu'il voulait faire périr, et pour qui j'intercédai encore dans ce temps-là.
21 Je pris le veau que vous aviez fait, ce produit de votre péché, je le brûlai au feu, je le broyai jusqu'à ce qu'il fût réduit en poudre, et je jetai cette poudre dans le torrent qui descend de la montagne.
22 A Tabeéra, à Massa, et à Kibroth Hattaava, vous excitâtes la colère de l'Éternel.
23 Et lorsque l'Éternel vous envoya à Kadès Barnéa, en disant: Montez, et prenez possession du pays que je vous donne! vous fûtes rebelles à l'ordre de l'Éternel, votre Dieu, vous n'eûtes point foi en lui, et vous n'obéîtes point à sa voix.
24 Vous avez été rebelles contre l'Éternel depuis que je vous connais.
25 Je me prosternai devant l'Éternel, je me prosternai quarante jours et quarante nuits, parce que l'Éternel avait dit qu'il voulait vous détruire.
26 Je priai l'Éternel, et je dis: Seigneur Éternel, ne détruis pas ton peuple, ton héritage, que tu as racheté dans ta grandeur, que tu as fait sortir d'Égypte par ta main puissante.
27 Souviens-toi de tes serviteurs, Abraham, Isaac et Jacob. Ne regarde point à l'opiniâtreté de ce peuple, à sa méchanceté et à son péché,
28 de peur que le pays d'où tu nous as fait sortir ne dise: C'est parce que l'Éternel n'avait pas le pouvoir de les mener dans le pays qu'il leur avait promis, et c'est parce qu'il les haïssait, qu'il les a fait sortir pour les faire mourir dans le désert.
29 Ils sont pourtant ton peuple et ton héritage, que tu as fait sortir d'Égypte par ta grande puissance et par ton bras étendu.

Not Because of Israel’s Righteousness
9 Hear, Israel: You are now about to cross the Jordan(A) to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you,(B) with large cities(C) that have walls up to the sky.(D) 2 The people are strong and tall—Anakites! You know about them and have heard it said: “Who can stand up against the Anakites?”(E) 3 But be assured today that the Lord your God is the one who goes across ahead of you(F) like a devouring fire.(G) He will destroy them; he will subdue them before you. And you will drive them out and annihilate them quickly,(H) as the Lord has promised you.
4 After the Lord your God has driven them out before you, do not say to yourself,(I) “The Lord has brought me here to take possession of this land because of my righteousness.” No, it is on account of the wickedness(J) of these nations(K) that the Lord is going to drive them out before you. 5 It is not because of your righteousness or your integrity(L) that you are going in to take possession of their land; but on account of the wickedness(M) of these nations,(N) the Lord your God will drive them out(O) before you, to accomplish what he swore(P) to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.(Q) 6 Understand, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people.(R)
The Golden Calf
7 Remember this and never forget how you aroused the anger(S) of the Lord your God in the wilderness. From the day you left Egypt until you arrived here, you have been rebellious(T) against the Lord.(U) 8 At Horeb you aroused the Lord’s wrath(V) so that he was angry enough to destroy you.(W) 9 When I went up on the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant(X) that the Lord had made with you, I stayed on the mountain forty days(Y) and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water.(Z) 10 The Lord gave me two stone tablets inscribed by the finger of God.(AA) On them were all the commandments the Lord proclaimed to you on the mountain out of the fire, on the day of the assembly.(AB)
11 At the end of the forty days and forty nights,(AC) the Lord gave me the two stone tablets,(AD) the tablets of the covenant. 12 Then the Lord told me, “Go down from here at once, because your people whom you brought out of Egypt have become corrupt.(AE) They have turned away quickly(AF) from what I commanded them and have made an idol for themselves.”
13 And the Lord said to me, “I have seen this people(AG), and they are a stiff-necked people indeed! 14 Let me alone,(AH) so that I may destroy them and blot out(AI) their name from under heaven.(AJ) And I will make you into a nation stronger and more numerous than they.”
15 So I turned and went down from the mountain while it was ablaze with fire. And the two tablets of the covenant were in my hands.(AK) 16 When I looked, I saw that you had sinned against the Lord your God; you had made for yourselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf.(AL) You had turned aside quickly from the way that the Lord had commanded you. 17 So I took the two tablets and threw them out of my hands, breaking them to pieces before your eyes.
18 Then once again I fell(AM) prostrate before the Lord for forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water,(AN) because of all the sin you had committed,(AO) doing what was evil in the Lord’s sight and so arousing his anger. 19 I feared the anger and wrath of the Lord, for he was angry enough with you to destroy you.(AP) But again the Lord listened to me.(AQ) 20 And the Lord was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him, but at that time I prayed for Aaron too. 21 Also I took that sinful thing of yours, the calf you had made, and burned it in the fire. Then I crushed it and ground it to powder as fine as dust(AR) and threw the dust into a stream that flowed down the mountain.(AS)
22 You also made the Lord angry(AT) at Taberah,(AU) at Massah(AV) and at Kibroth Hattaavah.(AW)
23 And when the Lord sent you out from Kadesh Barnea,(AX) he said, “Go up and take possession(AY) of the land I have given you.” But you rebelled(AZ) against the command of the Lord your God. You did not trust(BA) him or obey him. 24 You have been rebellious against the Lord ever since I have known you.(BB)
25 I lay prostrate before the Lord those forty days and forty nights(BC) because the Lord had said he would destroy you.(BD) 26 I prayed to the Lord and said, “Sovereign Lord, do not destroy your people,(BE) your own inheritance(BF) that you redeemed(BG) by your great power and brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand.(BH) 27 Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Overlook the stubbornness(BI) of this people, their wickedness and their sin. 28 Otherwise, the country(BJ) from which you brought us will say, ‘Because the Lord was not able to take them into the land he had promised them, and because he hated them,(BK) he brought them out to put them to death in the wilderness.’(BL) 29 But they are your people,(BM) your inheritance(BN) that you brought out by your great power and your outstretched arm.(BO)”

9 Hear, O Israel: Thou art to pass over Jordan this day, to go in to possess nations greater and mightier than thyself, cities great and fenced up to heaven,
2 A people great and tall, the children of the Anakims, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard say, Who can stand before the children of Anak!
3 Understand therefore this day, that the Lord thy God is he which goeth over before thee; as a consuming fire he shall destroy them, and he shall bring them down before thy face: so shalt thou drive them out, and destroy them quickly, as the Lord hath said unto thee.
4 Speak not thou in thine heart, after that the Lord thy God hath cast them out from before thee, saying, For my righteousness the Lord hath brought me in to possess this land: but for the wickedness of these nations the Lord doth drive them out from before thee.
5 Not for thy righteousness, or for the uprightness of thine heart, dost thou go to possess their land: but for the wickedness of these nations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee, and that he may perform the word which the Lord sware unto thy fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
6 Understand therefore, that the Lord thy God giveth thee not this good land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiffnecked people.
7 Remember, and forget not, how thou provokedst the Lord thy God to wrath in the wilderness: from the day that thou didst depart out of the land of Egypt, until ye came unto this place, ye have been rebellious against the Lord.
8 Also in Horeb ye provoked the Lord to wrath, so that the Lord was angry with you to have destroyed you.
9 When I was gone up into the mount to receive the tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant which the Lord made with you, then I abode in the mount forty days and forty nights, I neither did eat bread nor drink water:
10 And the Lord delivered unto me two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written according to all the words, which the Lord spake with you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly.
11 And it came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights, that the Lord gave me the two tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant.
12 And the Lord said unto me, Arise, get thee down quickly from hence; for thy people which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt have corrupted themselves; they are quickly turned aside out of the way which I commanded them; they have made them a molten image.
13 Furthermore the Lord spake unto me, saying, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:
14 Let me alone, that I may destroy them, and blot out their name from under heaven: and I will make of thee a nation mightier and greater than they.
15 So I turned and came down from the mount, and the mount burned with fire: and the two tables of the covenant were in my two hands.
16 And I looked, and, behold, ye had sinned against the Lord your God, and had made you a molten calf: ye had turned aside quickly out of the way which the Lord had commanded you.
17 And I took the two tables, and cast them out of my two hands, and brake them before your eyes.
18 And I fell down before the Lord, as at the first, forty days and forty nights: I did neither eat bread, nor drink water, because of all your sins which ye sinned, in doing wickedly in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger.
19 For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure, wherewith the Lord was wroth against you to destroy you. But the Lord hearkened unto me at that time also.
20 And the Lord was very angry with Aaron to have destroyed him: and I prayed for Aaron also the same time.
21 And I took your sin, the calf which ye had made, and burnt it with fire, and stamped it, and ground it very small, even until it was as small as dust: and I cast the dust thereof into the brook that descended out of the mount.
22 And at Taberah, and at Massah, and at Kibrothhattaavah, ye provoked the Lord to wrath.
23 Likewise when the Lord sent you from Kadeshbarnea, saying, Go up and possess the land which I have given you; then ye rebelled against the commandment of the Lord your God, and ye believed him not, nor hearkened to his voice.
24 Ye have been rebellious against the Lord from the day that I knew you.
25 Thus I fell down before the Lord forty days and forty nights, as I fell down at the first; because the Lord had said he would destroy you.
26 I prayed therefore unto the Lord, and said, O Lord God, destroy not thy people and thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed through thy greatness, which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand.
27 Remember thy servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; look not unto the stubbornness of this people, nor to their wickedness, nor to their sin:
28 Lest the land whence thou broughtest us out say, Because the Lord was not able to bring them into the land which he promised them, and because he hated them, he hath brought them out to slay them in the wilderness.
29 Yet they are thy people and thine inheritance, which thou broughtest out by thy mighty power and by thy stretched out arm.
