15 Vart sjunde år skall du låta vara ett friår, 2 och detta är vad som gäller angående friåret: Varje långivare som lånat ut något åt sin nästa, skall då efterskänka sin fordran. Han får inte utkräva skulder av sin nästa och sin broder, ty ett Herrens friår har utlysts. 3 En utlänning må du kräva, men om du har något att fordra av din broder skall du efterskänka det.
4 Men ingen fattig borde finnas hos dig, ty Herren skall rikligen välsigna dig i det land som Herren, din Gud, ger dig till besittning som din arvedel, 5 om du endast lyder Herrens, din Guds, röst, så att du håller fast vid alla dessa bud, som jag i dag ger dig, och följer dem. 6 Ty Herren, din Gud, skall välsigna dig, så som han har lovat dig. Du skall ge lån åt många folk, men själv skall du inte behöva låna, och du skall råda över många folk, men de skall inte råda över dig.
7 Om det finns någon fattig hos dig, en av dina bröder, i någon av dina städer i det land som Herren, din Gud, ger dig, skall du inte förhärda ditt hjärta eller tillsluta din hand för din fattige broder, 8 utan villigt öppna din hand för honom och villigt låna honom vad han behöver i sin brist. 9 Se till att inte denna onda tanke uppstår i ditt hjärta: "Det sjunde året, friåret, är nära", och du så ser med ont öga på din fattige broder och inte ger honom något. Han kan då ropa till Herren mot dig, och synd kommer att vila på dig. 10 Du skall villigt ge åt honom och ditt hjärta skall inte vara motvilligt när du ger, ty för en sådan gåvas skull skall Herren, din Gud, välsigna dig i alla dina verk och i allt vad du företar dig. 11 Fattiga kommer nämligen aldrig att saknas i landet, därför befaller jag dig: Du skall villigt öppna din hand för din broder, för de behövande och fattiga i ditt land.
Frigivning av slavar
12 Om någon av ditt folk, en hebreisk man eller kvinna, har sålt sig till dig och tjänat dig i sex år, skall du det sjunde året frige honom. 13 Och när du friger honom, skall du inte låta honom gå med tomma händer. 14 Förse honom rikligt från din hjord, från din loge och från din vinpress. Du skall ge honom av det som Herren, din Gud, har välsignat dig med. 15 Kom ihåg att du var slav i Egyptens land och att Herren, din Gud, friköpte dig. Därför ger jag dig denna befallning i dag.
16 Men skulle han säga till dig att han inte vill lämna dig, därför att han älskar dig och ditt husfolk, eftersom han har haft det bra hos dig, 17 då skall du ta en syl och sticka den genom hans öra in i dörren. Därefter skall han vara din slav för alltid. Med din tjänarinna skall du göra på samma sätt. 18 Du skall inte anse det hårt att du måste släppa din tjänare fri, för i sex år har han gett dig dubbelt så värdefull tjänst som någon avlönad arbetare. Och Herren, din Gud, skall välsigna dig i allt vad du gör.
Det förstfödda bland djuren
19 Allt förstfött av hankön som föds bland din nötboskap och småboskap skall du helga åt Herren, din Gud. Du skall vid ditt arbete inte använda det förstfödda bland din nötboskap och inte heller klippa ullen på det som är förstfött bland din småboskap. 20 Inför Herrens, din Guds, ansikte skall du varje år tillsammans med ditt husfolk äta det på den plats som Herren utväljer. 21 Men om djuret har något lyte, om det är halt eller blint eller allvarligt vanskapt, skall du inte offra det åt Herren, din Gud. 22 Inom dina portar må du äta det. Både den som är oren och den som är ren får äta av det, så som man äter kött av gasell eller hjort. 23 Men blodet skall du inte förtära, utan du skall hälla ut det på marken som vatten.

15 ‘Aan het einde van elk zevende jaar moeten alle schulden worden kwijtgescholden. 2 Iedere schuldeiser zal de schuld die een andere Israëliet bij hem heeft, volledig kwijtschelden, want de Here heeft iedereen van zijn verplichtingen ontslagen. 3 Deze kwijtschelding geldt niet voor buitenlanders, maar wat uw broeder u schuldig is, moet u hem kwijtschelden. 4,5 Niemand zal hierdoor arm worden want, als u dit gebod gehoorzaamt, zal de Here u rijk zegenen in het land dat Hij u geeft. De enige voorwaarde die de Here stelt voor zijn zegen, is dat u zorgvuldig leeft naar de geboden van de Here, uw God, die ik u vandaag geef. 6 Hij zal u zegenen zoals Hij heeft beloofd. U zult aan vele volken geld uitlenen, maar zelf zult u nooit iets hoeven lenen. U zult heersen over vele volken, maar zij zullen niet over u heersen.
7 Als er bij uw aankomst in het land dat de Here u zal geven, enkele armen onder u zijn, moet u uw hart en hand niet voor hen sluiten, 8 u moet hun net zoveel lenen als zij nodig hebben. 9 Denk erom! Weiger nooit een lening omdat het jaar van kwijtschelding voor de deur staat! Als u weigert te lenen, zal de arme tot de Here roepen en dan zal het u worden toegerekend als een zonde. 10 U moet hem lenen wat hij nodig heeft, zonder te klagen! Want de Here zal u helpen bij alles wat u doet, als u zo aan uw broeder leent! 11 Er zullen altijd arme mensen onder u zijn, daarom is dit gebod noodzakelijk. U moet uw arme broeder vrijgevig tegemoet treden en hem lenen wat hij nodig heeft.
12 Als u een Hebreeuwse slaaf koopt—man of vrouw—moet u hem, nadat hij zes jaar voor u heeft gewerkt, vrijlaten. 13 Stuur hem niet met lege handen weg! 14 Geef hem een royaal afscheidsgeschenk van uw kudde, uw wijnpers en uw olijfpers. Deel met hem datgene waarin de Here, uw God, u heeft gezegend. 15 Denk eraan dat u zelf slaven bent geweest in het land Egypte en dat de Here, uw God, u redde! Daarom geef ik u dit gebod. 16 Maar stel dat uw Hebreeuwse slaaf niet weg wil omdat hij van u houdt, zich in uw huis prettig voelt en goed met u kan opschieten, 17 neem dan een priem en steek die tegen de deur door zijn oor. Daarna zal hij voor altijd uw slaaf zijn. Hetzelfde moet u met uw slavinnen doen. 18 Maar als u een slaaf vrijlaat, moet u dat niet met een spijtig gevoel doen, de slaaf heeft u immers in die zes jaar de helft minder gekost dan een gehuurde werkkracht. De Here, uw God, zal u voorspoed geven in alles wat u doet, omdat u hem hebt vrijgelaten!
19 U moet alle eerstgeboren mannelijke dieren van uw kudden afzonderen voor God. Gebruik de eerstgeborenen van uw ossen niet om het land mee te bewerken en scheer de eerstgeborenen van uw geiten en schapen niet. 20 Nee, u en uw gezin moeten deze dieren elk jaar voor de ogen van de Here, uw God, in zijn heiligdom opeten. 21 Maar als een eerstgeboren dier een gebrek heeft, als hij lam of blind is of als er iets anders aan hem mankeert, mag u het niet offeren. 22 Gebruik het dier dan als voedsel voor uw gezin thuis. Iedereen, rein of onrein, mag ervan eten zoals ook iedereen van een gazelle of een hert mag eten. 23 Alleen het bloed mag u niet eten, giet het als water uit op de grond.’

The Year for Canceling Debts(A)
15 At the end of every seven years you must cancel debts.(B) 2 This is how it is to be done: Every creditor shall cancel any loan they have made to a fellow Israelite. They shall not require payment from anyone among their own people, because the Lord’s time for canceling debts has been proclaimed. 3 You may require payment from a foreigner,(C) but you must cancel any debt your fellow Israelite owes you. 4 However, there need be no poor people among you, for in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess as your inheritance, he will richly bless(D) you, 5 if only you fully obey the Lord your God and are careful to follow(E) all these commands I am giving you today. 6 For the Lord your God will bless you as he has promised, and you will lend to many nations but will borrow from none. You will rule over many nations but none will rule over you.(F)
7 If anyone is poor(G) among your fellow Israelites in any of the towns of the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted(H) toward them. 8 Rather, be openhanded(I) and freely lend them whatever they need. 9 Be careful not to harbor this wicked thought: “The seventh year, the year for canceling debts,(J) is near,” so that you do not show ill will(K) toward the needy among your fellow Israelites and give them nothing. They may then appeal to the Lord against you, and you will be found guilty of sin.(L) 10 Give generously to them and do so without a grudging heart;(M) then because of this the Lord your God will bless(N) you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to. 11 There will always be poor people(O) in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your fellow Israelites who are poor and needy in your land.(P)
Freeing Servants(Q)(R)
12 If any of your people—Hebrew men or women—sell themselves to you and serve you six years, in the seventh year you must let them go free.(S) 13 And when you release them, do not send them away empty-handed. 14 Supply them liberally from your flock, your threshing floor(T) and your winepress. Give to them as the Lord your God has blessed you. 15 Remember that you were slaves(U) in Egypt and the Lord your God redeemed you.(V) That is why I give you this command today.
16 But if your servant says to you, “I do not want to leave you,” because he loves you and your family and is well off with you, 17 then take an awl and push it through his earlobe into the door, and he will become your servant for life. Do the same for your female servant.
18 Do not consider it a hardship to set your servant free, because their service to you these six years has been worth twice as much as that of a hired hand. And the Lord your God will bless you in everything you do.
The Firstborn Animals
19 Set apart for the Lord(W) your God every firstborn male(X) of your herds and flocks.(Y) Do not put the firstborn of your cows to work, and do not shear the firstborn of your sheep.(Z) 20 Each year you and your family are to eat them in the presence of the Lord your God at the place he will choose.(AA) 21 If an animal has a defect,(AB) is lame or blind, or has any serious flaw, you must not sacrifice it to the Lord your God.(AC) 22 You are to eat it in your own towns. Both the ceremonially unclean and the clean may eat it, as if it were gazelle or deer.(AD) 23 But you must not eat the blood; pour it out on the ground like water.(AE)

15 At the end of every seven years thou shalt make a release.
2 And this is the manner of the release: Every creditor that lendeth ought unto his neighbour shall release it; he shall not exact it of his neighbour, or of his brother; because it is called the Lord's release.
3 Of a foreigner thou mayest exact it again: but that which is thine with thy brother thine hand shall release;
4 Save when there shall be no poor among you; for the Lord shall greatly bless thee in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it:
5 Only if thou carefully hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe to do all these commandments which I command thee this day.
6 For the Lord thy God blesseth thee, as he promised thee: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, but thou shalt not borrow; and thou shalt reign over many nations, but they shall not reign over thee.
7 If there be among you a poor man of one of thy brethren within any of thy gates in thy land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother:
8 But thou shalt open thine hand wide unto him, and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he wanteth.
9 Beware that there be not a thought in thy wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother, and thou givest him nought; and he cry unto the Lord against thee, and it be sin unto thee.
10 Thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him: because that for this thing the Lord thy God shall bless thee in all thy works, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto.
11 For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land.
12 And if thy brother, an Hebrew man, or an Hebrew woman, be sold unto thee, and serve thee six years; then in the seventh year thou shalt let him go free from thee.
13 And when thou sendest him out free from thee, thou shalt not let him go away empty:
14 Thou shalt furnish him liberally out of thy flock, and out of thy floor, and out of thy winepress: of that wherewith the Lord thy God hath blessed thee thou shalt give unto him.
15 And thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in the land of Egypt, and the Lord thy God redeemed thee: therefore I command thee this thing to day.
16 And it shall be, if he say unto thee, I will not go away from thee; because he loveth thee and thine house, because he is well with thee;
17 Then thou shalt take an aul, and thrust it through his ear unto the door, and he shall be thy servant for ever. And also unto thy maidservant thou shalt do likewise.
18 It shall not seem hard unto thee, when thou sendest him away free from thee; for he hath been worth a double hired servant to thee, in serving thee six years: and the Lord thy God shall bless thee in all that thou doest.
19 All the firstling males that come of thy herd and of thy flock thou shalt sanctify unto the Lord thy God: thou shalt do no work with the firstling of thy bullock, nor shear the firstling of thy sheep.
20 Thou shalt eat it before the Lord thy God year by year in the place which the Lord shall choose, thou and thy household.
21 And if there be any blemish therein, as if it be lame, or blind, or have any ill blemish, thou shalt not sacrifice it unto the Lord thy God.
22 Thou shalt eat it within thy gates: the unclean and the clean person shall eat it alike, as the roebuck, and as the hart.
23 Only thou shalt not eat the blood thereof; thou shalt pour it upon the ground as water.
