Bevara renheten i lägret
1-2 Herren sa till Mose: Tala om för Israels folk att de måste sända bort alla spetälska från lägret, och alla som har flytningar och alla som har blivit orenade genom att röra vid en död människa.
3 Detta gäller både män och kvinnor. Skicka iväg dem från lägret, så att de inte orenar den plats där jag bor bland er.
4 Dessa befallningar verkställdes enligt Herrens ord till Mose.
5-6 Sedan sa Herren till Mose: Tala om för Israels folk att när någon syndar, vare sig det är en man eller en kvinna, och därmed också sviker Herren, så står den människan i skuld.
7 Hon måste bekänna sin synd, och om det gäller stöld så ska hon ersätta det stulna fullt ut och därtill tjugo procent.
8 Men om den som hon handlat fel mot är död och det inte finns någon nära släkting som betalningen kan göras till, ska den lämnas till prästen tillsammans med en bagge som försoning.
9-10 Allt det som Israels folk överlämnar till prästen tillfaller denne.
Att bevisa otrohet
11-12 Herren sa till Mose: Säg till folket i Israel att om en kvinna är otrogen med en annan man, eller det finns misstanke om detta,
13-14 och hennes make är svartsjuk men det inte finns något bevis, därför att det inte finns några vittnen,
15 ska han gå till prästen med sin hustru och ta med ett offer för henne. Det ska bestå av tre och en halv liter kornmjöl utan olja och rökelse, och genom detta misstankeoffer får man fram sanningen om hon är skyldig eller inte.
16 Prästen ska föra fram henne inför Herren,
17 ta heligt vatten i en lerkruka och blanda detta med jord från golvet i tabernaklet.
18 Han ska lösa upp kvinnans hår, placera misstankeoffret i hennes händer medan han själv håller krukan med det bittra vattnet som ger förbannelse.
19 Om hon under ed försäkrar att hon är oskyldig ska han säga till henne: 'Om ingen man, förutom din äkta man, har legat med dig, är du fri från följderna av detta bittra vatten som annars orsakar förbannelse.
20 Men om du har begått äktenskapsbrott,
21-22 ska Herren göra dig till en förbannelse bland ditt folk. Du kommer att bli barnlös, för Herren ska se till att ditt underliv ruttnar bort och din kropp sväller.' Kvinnan ska då uppmanas att säga: 'Ja, låt det bli så.'
23 Sedan ska prästen skriva ner förbannelsen på ett ark och tvätta av den i det bittra vattnet.
24 När kvinnan sedan på prästens uppmaning dricker vattnet, kommer det att bli bittert i henne om hon är skyldig.
25 Sedan ska prästen ta misstankeoffret från kvinnans hand, vifta med det inför Herren och bära det till altaret.
26 Han ska ta en handfull av det och bränna det på altaret och därefter uppmana kvinnan att dricka vattnet.
27 Om hon har orenat sig genom äktenskapsbrott kommer vattnet att bli bittert i henne. Hennes kropp kommer att svälla upp och hennes underliv att ruttna, och hon ska bli en förbannelse bland sitt folk.
28 Men om hon är ren och inte har begått äktenskapsbrott, kommer hon inte att lida någon skada och kommer att kunna fortsätta att föda barn.
29 Detta är vad lagen säger när en kvinna är otrogen, eller hennes man misstänker otrohet
30 och drabbas av svartsjuka. Prästen ska handla efter vad som föreskrivs här.
31 Hennes make går fri, men om hustrun är skyldig får hon stå för följderna av sin synd.

Unclean People
5 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Command the people of Israel that they (A)put out of the camp everyone who is leprous[a] or has (B)a discharge and everyone who is (C)unclean through contact with the dead. 3 You shall put out both male and female, putting them outside the camp, that they may not defile their camp, (D)in the midst of which I dwell.” 4 And the people of Israel did so, and put them outside the camp; as the Lord said to Moses, so the people of Israel did.
Confession and Restitution
5 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 6 “Speak to the people of Israel, (E)When a man or woman commits any of the sins that people commit by breaking faith with the Lord, and that person realizes his guilt, 7 (F)he shall confess his sin that he has committed.[b] (G)And he shall make full restitution for his wrong, adding a fifth to it and giving it to him to whom he did the wrong. 8 But if the man has no next of kin to whom restitution may be made for the wrong, the restitution for wrong shall go to the Lord for the priest, in addition to (H)the ram of atonement with which atonement is made for him. 9 And (I)every contribution, all the holy donations of the people of Israel, which they bring to the priest, shall be his. 10 Each one shall keep his holy donations: whatever anyone gives to the priest shall be his.”
A Test for Adultery
11 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 12 “Speak to the people of Israel, If any man's wife goes astray and breaks faith with him, 13 if a man (J)lies with her sexually, and it is hidden from the eyes of her husband, and she is undetected though she has defiled herself, and there is no witness against her, (K)since she was not taken in the act, 14 and if the spirit of jealousy comes over him and he is jealous of his wife who has defiled herself, or if the spirit of jealousy comes over him and he is jealous of his wife, though she has not defiled herself, 15 then the man shall bring his wife to the priest and bring the offering required of her, a tenth of an ephah[c] of barley flour. (L)He shall pour no oil on it and put no frankincense on it, for it is a grain offering of jealousy, a grain offering of remembrance, (M)bringing iniquity to remembrance.
16 “And the priest shall bring her near and set her before the Lord. 17 And the priest shall take holy water in an earthenware vessel and take some of the dust that is on the floor of the tabernacle and put it into the water. 18 And the priest shall set the woman before the Lord and (N)unbind the hair of the woman's head and place in her hands the grain offering of remembrance, which is the grain offering of jealousy. And in his hand the priest shall have the water of bitterness that brings the curse. 19 Then the priest shall make her take an oath, saying, ‘If no man has lain with you, and if you have not turned aside to uncleanness while you were under your husband's authority, be free from this water of bitterness that brings the curse. 20 But if you have gone astray, though you are under your husband's authority, and if you have defiled yourself, and some man other than your husband has lain with you, 21 then’ (let the priest make the woman take the oath of the curse, and say to the woman) (O)‘the Lord make you a curse and an oath among your people, when the Lord makes your thigh fall away and your body swell. 22 May this water that brings the curse (P)pass into your bowels and make your womb swell and your thigh fall away.’ And the woman shall say, (Q)‘Amen, Amen.’
23 “Then the priest shall write these curses in a book and wash them off into the water of bitterness. 24 And he shall make the woman drink the water of bitterness that brings the curse, and the water that brings the curse shall enter into her and cause bitter pain. 25 And the priest shall take the grain offering of jealousy out of the woman's hand (R)and shall wave the grain offering before the Lord and bring it to the altar. 26 And the priest (S)shall take a handful of the grain offering, as its memorial portion, and burn it on the altar, and afterward shall make the woman drink the water. 27 And when he has made her drink the water, then, if she has defiled herself and has broken faith with her husband, the water that brings the curse shall enter into her and cause bitter pain, and her womb shall swell, and her thigh shall fall away, and the woman (T)shall become a curse among her people. 28 But if the woman has not defiled herself and is clean, then she shall be free and shall conceive children.
29 “This is the law in cases of jealousy, when a wife, (U)though under her husband's authority, goes astray and defiles herself, 30 or when the spirit of jealousy comes over a man and he is jealous of his wife. Then he shall set the woman before the Lord, and the priest shall carry out for her all this law. 31 The man shall be free from iniquity, but the woman (V)shall bear her iniquity.”

Isolation of the Unclean
5 The Lord instructed Moses: 2 “Command the Israelites to send away anyone from the camp who is afflicted with a skin disease, anyone who has a bodily discharge, or anyone who is defiled because of a corpse.(A) 3 You must send away both male or female; send them outside the camp, so that they will not defile their camps where I dwell among them.” 4 The Israelites did this, sending them outside the camp. The Israelites did as the Lord instructed Moses.
Compensation for Wrongdoing
5 The Lord spoke to Moses: 6 “Tell the Israelites: When a man or woman commits any sin against another, that person acts unfaithfully toward the Lord and is guilty. 7 The person is to confess the sin he has committed. He is to pay full compensation, add a fifth of its value to it, and give it to the individual he has wronged.(B) 8 But if that individual has no relative(C) to receive compensation,[a] the compensation goes to the Lord for the priest, along with the atonement ram by which the priest will make atonement for the guilty person.(D) 9 Every holy contribution the Israelites present to the priest will be his.(E) 10 Each one’s holy contribution is his to give; what each one gives to the priest will be his.”
The Jealousy Ritual
11 The Lord spoke to Moses: 12 “Speak to the Israelites and tell them: If any man’s wife goes astray, is unfaithful to him, 13 and sleeps with another,[b] but it is concealed from her husband, and she is undetected, even though she has defiled herself, since there is no witness against her, and she wasn’t caught in the act; 14 and if a feeling of jealousy comes over the husband and he becomes jealous because of his wife who has defiled herself—or if a feeling of jealousy comes over him and he becomes jealous of her though she has not defiled herself— 15 then the man is to bring his wife to the priest. He is also to bring an offering for her of two quarts[c] of barley flour. He is not to pour oil over it or put frankincense on it because it is a grain offering of jealousy, a grain offering for remembrance that brings sin to mind.
16 “The priest is to bring her forward and have her stand before the Lord. 17 Then the priest is to take holy water in a clay bowl, and take some of the dust from the tabernacle floor and put it in the water. 18 After the priest has the woman stand before the Lord, he is to let down her hair[d] and place in her hands the grain offering for remembrance, which is the grain offering of jealousy. The priest is to hold the bitter water that brings a curse. 19 The priest will require the woman to take an oath and will say to her, ‘If no man has slept with you, if you have not gone astray and become defiled while under your husband’s authority, be unaffected by this bitter water that brings a curse. 20 But if you have gone astray while under your husband’s authority, if you have defiled yourself and a man other than your husband has slept with you’— 21 at this point the priest must make the woman take the oath with the sworn curse, and he is to say to her—‘May the Lord make you into an object of your people’s cursing and swearing when He makes your thigh[e] shrivel and your belly swell.[f] 22 May this water that brings a curse enter your stomach, causing your belly to swell and your thigh to shrivel.’
“And the woman must reply, ‘Amen, Amen.’
23 “Then the priest is to write these curses on a scroll and wash them off into the bitter water. 24 He will require the woman to drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and it will enter her and cause bitter suffering. 25 The priest is to take the grain offering of jealousy from the woman’s hand, wave the offering before the Lord, and bring it to the altar. 26 The priest is to take a handful of the grain offering as a memorial portion and burn it on the altar. Then he will require the woman to drink the water.
27 “When he makes her drink the water, if she has defiled herself and been unfaithful to her husband, the water that brings a curse will enter her and cause bitter suffering; her belly will swell, and her thigh will shrivel. She will become a curse among her people. 28 But if the woman has not defiled herself and is pure, she will be unaffected and will be able to conceive children.
29 “This is the law regarding jealousy when a wife goes astray and defiles herself while under her husband’s authority, 30 or when a feeling of jealousy comes over a husband and he becomes jealous of his wife. He is to have the woman stand before the Lord, and the priest will apply this entire ritual to her. 31 The husband will be free of guilt, but that woman will bear the consequences of her guilt.”
