5 ¹ Follow God’s example,^(A) therefore, as dearly loved children^{(B) 2} and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us^(C) and gave himself up for us^(D) as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.^(E)

²⁸ They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,^{(A) 29} and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said.^{(B) 30} They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.^{(C) 31} After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.^(D)

³⁴ Jesus said, “Father,^(A) forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”^[a](B) And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.^(C)

15 We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak^(A) and not to please ourselves. ² Each of us should please our neighbors for their good,^(B) to build them up.^(C)

² Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.^(A)
