1 El anciano saluda al querido Gayo, a quien ama en verdad.
Alabanzas a Gayo
2 Querido hermano, pido a Dios que, así como te va bien espiritualmente, te vaya bien en todo y tengas buena salud. 3 Me alegré mucho cuando algunos hermanos vinieron y me contaron que te mantienes fiel a la verdad. 4 No hay para mí mayor alegría que saber que mis hijos viven de acuerdo con la verdad.
5 Querido hermano, te estás portando fielmente en el servicio que prestas a los demás hermanos, especialmente a los que llegan de otros lugares. 6 Delante de la comunidad han hablado ellos de cuánto los amas. Por favor, ayúdalos en lo que necesiten para seguir su viaje, de manera agradable a Dios. 7 Pues ellos han emprendido su viaje en el servicio de Jesucristo, y no han aceptado ninguna ayuda de gente pagana. 8 Por eso nosotros debemos hacernos cargo de ellos, para ayudarlos en la predicación de la verdad.
Conductas opuestas de Diótrefes y Demetrio
9 Yo escribí una carta a la comunidad, pero Diótrefes no acepta nuestra autoridad porque le gusta mandar. 10 Por eso, cuando yo vaya le llamaré la atención, pues anda contando chismes y mentiras contra nosotros. Y, no contento con esto, no recibe a los hermanos que llegan, y a quienes quieren recibirlos les prohíbe hacerlo y los expulsa de la comunidad.
11 Querido hermano, no sigas los malos ejemplos, sino los buenos. El que hace lo bueno es de Dios, pero el que hace lo malo no ha visto a Dios.
12 Todos, incluso la verdad misma, hablan bien de Demetrio. También nosotros hablamos en favor suyo, y tú sabes que decimos la verdad.

13 Yo tenía mucho que decirte, pero no quiero hacerlo por escrito, 14 porque espero verte pronto y hablar contigo personalmente.

2 Amado hermano, le pido a Dios que te encuentres muy bien, y también le pido que te vaya bien en todo lo que hagas, y que tengas buena salud.
La buena conducta de Gayo
3 Algunos miembros de la iglesia vinieron y me contaron que sigues confiando en la verdad que Jesucristo nos enseñó. Eso me dio mucho gusto. 4 Nada me alegra más que saber que mis hijos[a] obedecen siempre a la verdad que Dios nos ha enseñado.
5 Querido hermano, tú te portas muy bien cuando ayudas a los otros seguidores de Cristo, especialmente a los que llegan de otros lugares. 6 Ellos le han contado a toda la iglesia cuánto los amas. Por favor, ayúdalos en todo lo que necesiten para continuar su viaje. Hazlo de tal modo que resulte agradable a Dios. 7 Ellos han comenzado a anunciar el mensaje de Jesucristo, y no han aceptado ninguna ayuda de los que no creen en Dios. 8 Por eso, debemos ayudarlos en este trabajo que han empezado, y también debemos hacernos cargo de ellos.
Diótrefes y Demetrio
9 Yo escribí una carta a la iglesia, pero Diótrefes no acepta mi autoridad, pues le gusta mandar. 10 Por eso, cuando yo vaya a visitarlos, le llamaré la atención, porque anda hablando mal de nosotros. Y no sólo eso, sino que tampoco recibe a los seguidores de Cristo que llegan de otras partes. Y si alguien quiere recibirlos en su casa, se lo prohíbe y lo echa de la iglesia.
11 Amado hermano Gayo, no sigas el ejemplo de los que hacen el mal, sino el ejemplo de los buenos. El que hace lo bueno es parte de la familia de Dios, pero el que hace lo malo nunca ha visto a Dios.
12 Todos hablan bien de Demetrio, y su comportamiento nos demuestra que dicen la verdad. También nosotros hablamos bien de él, y tú sabes que no mentimos.

13 Tengo mucho más que decirte, pero prefiero no hacerlo por escrito, 14 porque espero ir pronto a verte, y entonces podremos hablar personalmente.
15 Que Dios te bendiga con su paz.

2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
3 For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth.
4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
5 Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers;
6 Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well:
7 Because that for his name's sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles.
8 We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth.
9 I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.
10 Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church.
11 Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.

2 Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well. 3 It gave me great joy when some believers(B) came and testified about your faithfulness to the truth, telling how you continue to walk in it.(C) 4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children(D) are walking in the truth.(E)
5 Dear friend, you are faithful in what you are doing for the brothers and sisters,[a](F) even though they are strangers to you.(G) 6 They have told the church about your love. Please send them on their way(H) in a manner that honors(I) God. 7 It was for the sake of the Name(J) that they went out, receiving no help from the pagans.(K) 8 We ought therefore to show hospitality to such people so that we may work together for the truth.
9 I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first, will not welcome us. 10 So when I come,(L) I will call attention to what he is doing, spreading malicious nonsense about us. Not satisfied with that, he even refuses to welcome other believers.(M) He also stops those who want to do so and puts them out of the church.(N)
11 Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good.(O) Anyone who does what is good is from God.(P) Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.(Q) 12 Demetrius is well spoken of by everyone(R)—and even by the truth itself. We also speak well of him, and you know that our testimony is true.(S)
