Greeting to Gaius
1 The Elder,
To the beloved Gaius, (A)whom I love in truth:
2 Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers. 3 For I (B)rejoiced greatly when brethren came and testified of the truth that is in you, just as you walk in the truth. 4 I have no greater (C)joy than to hear that (D)my children walk in [a]truth.
Gaius Commended for Generosity
5 Beloved, you do faithfully whatever you do for the brethren [b]and for strangers, 6 who have borne witness of your love before the church. If you send them forward on their journey in a manner worthy of God, you will do well, 7 because they went forth for His name’s sake, (E)taking nothing from the Gentiles. 8 We therefore ought to (F)receive[c] such, that we may become fellow workers for the truth.
Diotrephes and Demetrius
9 I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have the preeminence among them, does not receive us. 10 Therefore, if I come, I will call to mind his deeds which he does, (G)prating[d] against us with malicious words. And not content with that, he himself does not receive the brethren, and forbids those who wish to, putting them out of the church.
11 Beloved, (H)do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. (I)He who does good is of God, [e]but he who does evil has not seen (J)God.
12 Demetrius (K)has a good testimony from all, and from the truth itself. And we also [f]bear witness, (L)and you know that our testimony is true.
Farewell Greeting
13 (M)I had many things to write, but I do not wish to write to you with pen and ink; 14 but I hope to see you shortly, and we shall speak face to face.

2 Beloved, I pray that in all things thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth. 3 For I [a]rejoiced greatly, when brethren came and bare witness unto thy truth, even as thou walkest in truth. 4 Greater joy have I none than [b]this, to hear of my children walking in the truth.
5 Beloved, thou doest a faithful work in whatsoever thou doest toward them that are brethren and strangers withal; 6 who bare witness to thy love before the church: whom thou wilt do well to set forward on their journey worthily of God: 7 because that for the sake of the Name they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles. 8 We therefore ought to welcome such, that we may be fellow-workers [c]for the truth.
9 I wrote somewhat unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not. 10 Therefore, if I come, I will bring to remembrance his works which he doeth, prating against us with wicked words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and them that would he forbiddeth and casteth them out of the church. 11 Beloved, imitate not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: he that doeth evil hath not seen God. 12 Demetrius hath the witness of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, we also bear witness; and thou knowest that our witness is true.
13 I had many things to write unto thee, but I am unwilling to write them to thee with ink and pen: 14 but I hope shortly to see thee, and we shall speak face to face. Peace be unto thee. The friends salute thee. Salute the friends by name.

2 Anh thân mến! Tôi cầu chúc anh được thịnh vượng trên mọi mặt, được mạnh khỏe về phần xác cũng như vẫn thịnh vượng về phần hồn. 3 Vì tôi rất mừng khi các anh chị em đến đây làm chứng rằng anh có lòng trung thành với chân lý như anh vẫn sống trong chân lý vậy. 4 Không có gì vui mừng hơn cho tôi khi nghe biết con cái mình sống trong chân lý.
5 Anh thân mến! Anh vẫn trung tín trong những việc anh làm cho các anh chị em, dù họ là người xa lạ. 6 Họ làm chứng trước hội thánh về tình yêu thương của anh. Anh sẽ làm một việc tốt đẹp nếu anh giúp đỡ cho cuộc hành trình của họ một cách xứng đáng trước mặt Đức Chúa Trời. 7 Vì họ đã nhân danh Ngài ra đi mà không nhận gì của người ngoại cả. 8 Vậy, chúng ta cần phải hỗ trợ những người như thế để chúng ta trở thành người đồng lao hành động cho chân lý.
9 Tôi đã viết vài điều cho hội thánh, nhưng Đi-ô-trép, người thích đứng đầu hội thánh không chấp nhận chúng tôi. 10 Vì thế, nếu tôi đến, tôi sẽ nêu ra những việc ông ấy đã làm, những lời độc ác vô lý chống lại chúng tôi. Đã thế vẫn chưa đủ, ông ta còn không tiếp đón các anh chị em và ai muốn tiếp đón thì ông ta ngăn cản và đuổi ra khỏi hội thánh.
11 Anh thân mến! Đừng bắt chước điều ác, nhưng hãy bắt chước điều thiện. Ai làm điều thiện là thuộc về Đức Chúa Trời, còn kẻ làm điều ác thì đã chẳng thấy Đức Chúa Trời. 12 Mọi người đều làm chứng tốt cho Đê-mê-triu và chính chân lý cũng làm chứng như thế. Chúng tôi cũng làm chứng tốt cho anh ấy và anh ấy biết rằng lời chứng của chúng tôi là thật.
13 Tôi còn nhiều điều phải viết cho anh, nhưng không muốn viết bằng bút và mực. Tôi hy vọng sớm được thăm anh và trò chuyện mặt đối mặt với nhau.
14 Cầu chúc anh được bình an! Các bạn hữu gửi lời thăm anh. Cho tôi gửi lời thăm các bạn hữu đích danh từng người.
