Diotrephes and Demetrius

I have written something to the church, but Diotrephes, who likes to put himself first, does not welcome us.

For a bishop,[a] as God’s steward, must be blameless; he must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or addicted to wine or violent or greedy for gain,(A) but he must be hospitable,[b] a lover of goodness, self-controlled, upright, devout, and restrained, holding tightly to the trustworthy word of the teaching, so that he may be able both to exhort with sound instruction and to refute those who contradict it.

10 There are also many rebellious people, idle talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision;(B) 11 they must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for sordid gain what it is not right to teach.(C) 12 It was one of them, their very own prophet, who said,

“Cretans are always liars, vicious brutes, lazy gluttons.”

13 That testimony is true. For this reason rebuke them sharply, so that they may become sound in the faith,(D) 14 not paying attention to Jewish myths or to commandments of those who reject the truth.(E) 15 To the pure all things are pure, but to the corrupt and unbelieving nothing is pure; their very minds and consciences are corrupted.(F) 16 They profess to know God, but they deny him by their actions; they are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.(G)

The Dispute about Greatness

24 A dispute also arose among them as to which one of them was to be regarded as the greatest.(A) 25 But he said to them, “The kings of the gentiles lord it over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors.(B) 26 But not so with you; rather, the greatest among you must become like the youngest and the leader like one who serves.(C) 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.(D)

They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear,[a] and lay them on the shoulders of others, but they themselves are unwilling to lift a finger to move them.(A) They do all their deeds to be seen by others, for they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long.(B) They love to have the place of honor at banquets and the best seats in the synagogues(C) and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to have people call them rabbi. But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brothers and sisters.(D)

Rewards

40 “Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.(A) 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of the righteous, 42 and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple—truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward.”(B)

Do nothing from selfish ambition or empty conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves.(A) Let each of you look not to your own interests but to the interests of others.(B) Let the same mind be in you that was[a] in Christ Jesus,(C)

The Request of James and John

35 James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” 36 And he said to them, “What is it you want me to do for you?” 37 And they said to him, “Appoint us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.”(A) 38 But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?”(B) 39 They replied, “We are able.” Then Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized you will be baptized,(C) 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to appoint, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”

41 When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. 42 So Jesus called them and said to them, “You know that among the gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. 43 But it is not so among you; instead, whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant,(D) 44 and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give his life a ransom for many.”(E)

The Request of the Mother of James and John

20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to him with her sons, and kneeling before him, she asked a favor of him.(A) 21 And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Declare that these two sons of mine will sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.”(B) 22 But Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?”[a] They said to him, “We are able.”(C) 23 He said to them, “You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left, this is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”(D)

24 When the ten heard it, they were angry with the two brothers.(E) 25 But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them.(F) 26 It will not be so among you, but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant,(G) 27 and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave, 28 just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give his life a ransom for many.”(H)
