⁹ I have written something to the church, but Diotrephes, who likes to put himself first, does not acknowledge our authority.

⁷ For an overseer,^{[a] (A)}as God's steward, must be above reproach. He must not ^(B)be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent ^(C)or greedy for gain, ⁸ but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, ^(D)and disciplined. ⁹ He must ^(E)hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in ^(F)sound^[b] doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.

¹⁰ For there are many who are insubordinate, ^(G)empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of ^(H)the circumcision party.^{[c] 11} They must be silenced, since ^(I)they are upsetting whole families by teaching ^(J)for shameful gain what they ought not to teach. ^12 (K)One of the Cretans,^[d] a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”^{[e] 13} This testimony is true. Therefore ^(L)rebuke them ^(M)sharply, that they ^(N)may be sound in the faith, ^14 (O)not devoting themselves to Jewish myths and ^(P)the commands of people ^(Q)who turn away from the truth. ^15 (R)To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and ^(S)unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both ^(T)their minds and their consciences are defiled. ^16 (U)They profess to know God, but they ^(V)deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, ^(W)unfit for any good work.

Who Is the Greatest?

^24 (A)A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. ^25 (B)And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles ^(C)exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. ^26 (D)But not so with you. Rather, let ^(E)the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. ²⁷ For who is the greater, ^(F)one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But ^(G)I am among you as the one who serves.

⁴⁸ and said to them, ^(A)“Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and ^(B)whoever receives me receives him who sent me. For ^(C)he who is least among you all is the one who is great.”

³⁴ But they kept silent, for on the way ^(A)they had argued with one another about who was the greatest.

^4 (A)They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear,^[a] and lay them on people's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger. ^5 (B)They do all their deeds ^(C)to be seen by others. For they make ^(D)their phylacteries broad and ^(E)their fringes long, ⁶ and they ^(F)love the place of honor at feasts and ^(G)the best seats in the synagogues ⁷ and ^(H)greetings in ^(I)the marketplaces and being called ^(J)rabbi^[b] by others. ^8 (K)But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are ^(L)all brothers.^[c]

Rewards

^40 (A)“Whoever receives you receives me, and ^(B)whoever receives me receives him who sent me. ^41 (C)The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward. ⁴² And ^(D)whoever gives one of ^(E)these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.”

⁸ Therefore we ought to support people like these, that we may be fellow workers for the truth.

³ Do nothing from ^(A)selfish ambition or ^(B)conceit, but in ^(C)humility count others more significant than yourselves. ⁴ Let each of you ^(D)look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. ^5 (E)Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,^[a]
