Davidova briga za Šaulovu obitelj
9 Jednom je David upitao: »Je li ostao itko od Šaulove obitelji? Želim se pobrinuti za tu osobu, radi Jonatana.«
2 Među članovima Šaulove obitelji našao se sluga po imenu Siba. Pozvali su ga k Davidu.
Kralj ga upita: »Jesi li ti Siba?«
»Jesam, tebi na usluzi«, odgovori on.
3 »Postoji li još netko od Šaulove obitelji?« rekao je kralj, »Želim pokazati Božju dobrotu toj osobi.«
Siba odgovori: »Ostao je još samo hromi Jonatanov sin.«
4 »A gdje je on?« upita kralj.
»U kući Makira, Amielovog sina, u Lo Debaru«, odgovori Siba.
5 Tada kralj David zapovjedi da Jonatanovog sina dovedu iz Lo Debara, iz kuće Amielovog sina Makira.
6 Kad je Mefibošet, Jonatanov sin i Šaulov unuk, stao pred Davida, poklonio mu se do zemlje.
David je rekao: »Mefibošete!«
»Tvoj sam sluga«, odgovori on.
7 »Ne boj se«, reče mu David, »bit ću milostiv prema tebi radi tvoga oca Jonatana. Vratit ću ti svu zemlju koja je pripadala tvome djedu Šaulu i uvijek ćeš moći jesti za mojim stolom.«
8 Mefibošet se poklonio i rekao: »Ne vrijedim više od crknutog psa, a ti si ipak ljubazan prema meni.«
9 Tada je kralj pozvao Sibu, slugu Šaulove obitelji. Rekao mu je: »Dao sam unuku tvoga gospodara sve što je pripadalo njegovoj obitelj. 10 Ti, tvoji sinovi i sluge obrađivat ćete njegovu zemlju, sakupljati urod i hraniti ga. Mefibošet će uvijek imati mjesto za mojim stolom.[a]«
Siba je imao petnaestoricu sinova i dvadesetoricu slugu.
11 A Siba je rekao kralju: »Gospodaru, učinit ću sve što zapovijedaš.«
Tako je Mefibošet jeo za Davidovim stolom, kao bilo koji od kraljevih sinova. 12 Mefibošet je imao sinčića Miku i svi su Sibini ljudi bili njegovi sluge.
13 Živio je u Jeruzalemu. Hramao je na obje noge i svakog je dana jeo za kraljevim stolom.
David nanosi poraz Amoncima i Aramejcima
(1 Ljet 19,1-19)
10 Nakon nekog vremena umro je kralj Amonaca. Njegov je sin Hanun postao sljedeći kralj.
2 David pomisli: »Nahaš mi je bio odan i zato ću iskazati odanost njegovom sinu Hanunu.«
David je poslao glasnike da Hanunu izraze sućut zbog smrti oca.
Tako su Davidovi glasnici stigli u zemlju Amonaca. 3 No vođe Amonaca rekli su Hanunu: »Misliš li da David odaje počast tvome ocu zato što ti njegovi ljudi izražavaju sućut? Poslao ih je ovdje kao uhode, da istraže grad, kako bi ga poslije osvojili.«
4 Zato je Hanun zarobio Davidove glasnike, svakom od njih obrijao pola brade i skratio im odjeću napola, do stražnjice. Zatim ih je poslao natrag.
5 Kad su Davidu javili kako su njegovi ljudi osramoćeni, poslao im je glasnike ususret i poručio: »Ostanite u Jerihonu dok vam ne narastu brade i onda se vratite.«
6 Kad su Amonci shvatili koliko su uvrijedili Davida, unajmili su dvadeset tisuća aramejskih pješaka iz Bet Rehoba i Sobe, od kralja Maake tisuću vojnika te dvanaest tisuća vojnika iz Toba. 7 Kad je David to čuo, poslao je na njih Joaba s cijelom vojskom. 8 Amonci su izašli pred vrata svoga grada i postrojili se u bojne redove. Aramejci iz Sobe i Rehoba, Tobanci i Maakini vojnici stajali su zasebno na obližnjim poljima. 9 Kad je Joab vidio da se neprijateljski bojni redovi prostiru sprijeda i straga, izabrao je neke od najboljih izraelskih vojnika i poredao ih u bojne redove prema Aramejcima. 10 Ostale je vojnike stavio pod zapovjedništvo svoga brata Abišaja i on ih je postrojio prema Amoncima.
11 Joab je rekao Abišaju: »Ako Aramejci budu prejaki za mene, dođite mi pomoći. A ako Amonci budu prejaki za vas, ja ću doći vama pomoći. 12 Budite snažni! Borimo se hrabro za svoj narod i za gradove našeg Boga! BOG će učiniti onako kako misli da je najbolje!«
13 Zatim su Joab i njegovi vojnici krenuli u bitku, ali Aramejci su pobjegli pred njima. 14 Kad su Amonci vidjeli da Aramejci bježe, i oni su pobjegli pred Abišajem u svoj grad. Tada se Joab vratio u Jeruzalem.
15 Nakon poraza, koji su im nanijeli Izraelci, aramejska se vojska ponovo okupila. 16 Hadadezer[b] je pozvao u pomoć Aramejce s druge strane rijeke Eufrat i oni su došli u Helam. Predvodio ih je Šobak, zapovjednik Hadadezerove vojske.
17 Kad su to javili Davidu, okupio je cijelu izraelsku vojsku, prešao preko rijeke Jordan i došao u Helam. Aramejska vojska postrojila se u bojne redove, dočekala Davida i krenula u bitku. 18 No Aramejci su ubrzo pobjegli pred izraelskom vojskom. David im je pobio sedamsto vozača bojnih kola i četrdeset tisuća pješaka. Ubio je i Šobaka, zapovjednika njihove vojske.
19 Kad su svi kraljevi, Hadadezerovi podanici, vidjeli da su pobijeđeni, sklopili su mir s Izraelcima i postali njihovi podanici. Aramejci se više nisu usudili pomagati Amoncima.
David i Bat Šeba
11 U proljeće je David poslao Joaba s vojnim zapovjednicima i cijelom izraelskom vojskom u pohod na Amonce. Zaposjeli su amonsku prijestolnicu Rabu.
No David je ostao u Jeruzalemu. 2 Jedne je večeri, nakon popodnevnog odmora, ustao i šetao po krovu kraljevske palače. Opazio je ženu koja se kupala. Bila je vrlo lijepa. 3 David je poslao da se netko raspita o njoj. Javili su mu: »To je Bat Šeba, Eliamova kći, žena Urije Hetita.«
4 Poslao je glasnike da je dovedu. Kad je došla, David je spavao s njom, i to baš kad se bila očistila od mjesečnice. Potom se vratila svojoj kući.
5 Kad je shvatila da je zatrudnjela, poručila je Davidu: »Trudna sam.«
6 Nato je David poslao poruku Joabu: »Pošalji mi Uriju Hetita.«
David pokušava sakriti svoj grijeh
Joab je poslao Uriju Davidu. 7 Kad je Urija stigao, David se raspitivao kako su Joab i vojnici te kako se odvija rat.
8 Zatim mu je rekao: »Idi kući i opusti se sa svojom ženom.«
Za Urijom su iz palače poslali dar od kralja. 9 No Urija nije otišao kući. Prespavao je na ulazu u palaču s drugim kraljevim slugama.
10 Davidu su javili da Urija nije bio kod kuće. David ga upita: »Upravo si došao s puta. Zašto nisi otišao kući?«
11 Urija odgovori: »Kovčeg saveza, Izrael i Juda borave u šatorima, a moj gospodar Joab i vojnici moga gospodara kralja borave na otvorenome. Kako onda da ja odem kući, jedem i pijem, i spavam sa svojom ženom? Zaklinjem se kraljem, nikad to ne bih mogao učiniti!«
12 Tada će David: »Ostani ovdje još danas, a sutra te šaljem natrag.«
Urija je toga dana ostao u Jeruzalemu, a sutradan ga je 13 David pozvao da s njim jede i pije. Napio ga je, ali Urija uvečer ipak nije otišao kući. Opet je ostao s kraljevim slugama spavati na prostirci.
David planira Urijinu smrt
14 Ujutro je David napisao pismo Joabu i poslao ga po Uriji. 15 Napisao je: »Stavi Uriju u prve redove gdje je borba najžešća. Neka tamo ostane sâm, da ga neprijatelj obori i ubije.«
16 Dok je Joab držao grad pod opsadom, stavio je Uriju na položaj gdje su bili najžešći neprijateljski ratnici Amonci. 17 Kad su vojnici izašli iz grada i sukobili se s Joabovom vojskom, poginuli su neki od Davidovih ljudi, a među njima i Urija Hetit.
18 Joab je poslao Davidu detaljan izvještaj o bitci. 19 Rekao je glasniku: »Kad kralju ispričaš sve što se dogodilo, 20 možda će se naljutiti i pitati: ‘Zašto ste se toliko primaknuli gradu? Zar niste mogli pretpostaviti da će vas zasuti strijelama sa zidina? 21 Tko je i kako ubio Abimeleka, Jerubaalovog[c] sina? Zar nije žena bacila na njega mlinski kamen sa zidina pa je poginuo u Tebesu? Zašto ste prišli tako blizu zidinama?’ Ako te tako bude pitao, reci mu: ‘Poginuo je i tvoj sluga Urija Hetit.’«
22 Glasnik ode k Davidu i ispriča sve kako mu je Joab rekao.
23 Pričao je: »Napali su nas na otvorenome, ali mi smo ih potisnuli prema ulazu u grad. 24 Tada su nas sa zidina zasuli strijelama. Poginulo je nekoliko kraljevih vojnika, a među njima i tvoj sluga Urija Hetit.«
25 Nato David reče glasniku: »Ovako reci Joabu: ‘Neka te ovaj poraz ne obeshrabri jer nikad se ne zna tko će stradati od mača. Navali na grad još žešće i uništi ga.’ Reci tako Joabu i ohrabri ga.«
David uzima Bat Šebu za ženu
26 Kad je Urijina žena Bat Šeba čula da joj je muž poginuo, žalila je za njim. 27 A kad je prošlo vrijeme žalovanja, David je poslao po nju. Doveli su je u kraljevsku palaču, gdje je postala kraljevom ženom i rodila mu sina.
BOG je vidio zločin koji je počinio David.

David and Mephibosheth
9 David asked, “Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”(A)
2 Now there was a servant of Saul’s household named Ziba.(B) They summoned him to appear before David, and the king said to him, “Are you Ziba?”
“At your service,” he replied.
3 The king asked, “Is there no one still alive from the house of Saul to whom I can show God’s kindness?”
Ziba answered the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan;(C) he is lame(D) in both feet.”
4 “Where is he?” the king asked.
Ziba answered, “He is at the house of Makir(E) son of Ammiel in Lo Debar.”
5 So King David had him brought from Lo Debar, from the house of Makir son of Ammiel.
6 When Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David, he bowed down to pay him honor.(F)
David said, “Mephibosheth!”
“At your service,” he replied.
7 “Don’t be afraid,” David said to him, “for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan.(G) I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.(H)”
8 Mephibosheth(I) bowed down and said, “What is your servant, that you should notice a dead dog(J) like me?”
9 Then the king summoned Ziba, Saul’s steward, and said to him, “I have given your master’s grandson everything that belonged to Saul and his family. 10 You and your sons and your servants are to farm the land for him and bring in the crops, so that your master’s grandson(K) may be provided for. And Mephibosheth, grandson of your master, will always eat at my table.” (Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.)
11 Then Ziba said to the king, “Your servant will do whatever my lord the king commands his servant to do.” So Mephibosheth ate at David’s[a] table like one of the king’s sons.(L)
12 Mephibosheth had a young son named Mika, and all the members of Ziba’s household were servants of Mephibosheth.(M) 13 And Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, because he always ate at the king’s table; he was lame in both feet.
David Defeats the Ammonites(N)
10 In the course of time, the king of the Ammonites died, and his son Hanun succeeded him as king. 2 David thought, “I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash,(O) just as his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent a delegation to express his sympathy to Hanun concerning his father.
When David’s men came to the land of the Ammonites, 3 the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think David is honoring your father by sending envoys to you to express sympathy? Hasn’t David sent them to you only to explore the city and spy it out(P) and overthrow it?” 4 So Hanun seized David’s envoys, shaved off half of each man’s beard,(Q) cut off their garments at the buttocks,(R) and sent them away.
5 When David was told about this, he sent messengers to meet the men, for they were greatly humiliated. The king said, “Stay at Jericho till your beards have grown, and then come back.”
6 When the Ammonites realized that they had become obnoxious(S) to David, they hired twenty thousand Aramean(T) foot soldiers from Beth Rehob(U) and Zobah,(V) as well as the king of Maakah(W) with a thousand men, and also twelve thousand men from Tob.(X)
7 On hearing this, David sent Joab(Y) out with the entire army of fighting men. 8 The Ammonites came out and drew up in battle formation at the entrance of their city gate, while the Arameans of Zobah and Rehob and the men of Tob and Maakah were by themselves in the open country.
9 Joab saw that there were battle lines in front of him and behind him; so he selected some of the best troops in Israel and deployed them against the Arameans. 10 He put the rest of the men under the command of Abishai(Z) his brother and deployed them against the Ammonites. 11 Joab said, “If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you are to come to my rescue; but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come to rescue you. 12 Be strong,(AA) and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. The Lord will do what is good in his sight.”(AB)
13 Then Joab and the troops with him advanced to fight the Arameans, and they fled before him. 14 When the Ammonites(AC) realized that the Arameans were fleeing, they fled before Abishai and went inside the city. So Joab returned from fighting the Ammonites and came to Jerusalem.
15 After the Arameans saw that they had been routed by Israel, they regrouped. 16 Hadadezer had Arameans brought from beyond the Euphrates River; they went to Helam, with Shobak the commander of Hadadezer’s army leading them.
17 When David was told of this, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan and went to Helam. The Arameans formed their battle lines to meet David and fought against him. 18 But they fled before Israel, and David killed seven hundred of their charioteers and forty thousand of their foot soldiers.[b] He also struck down Shobak the commander of their army, and he died there. 19 When all the kings who were vassals of Hadadezer saw that they had been routed by Israel, they made peace with the Israelites and became subject(AD) to them.
So the Arameans(AE) were afraid to help the Ammonites anymore.
David and Bathsheba
11 In the spring,(AF) at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab(AG) out with the king’s men and the whole Israelite army.(AH) They destroyed the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah.(AI) But David remained in Jerusalem.
2 One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof(AJ) of the palace. From the roof he saw(AK) a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, 3 and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, “She is Bathsheba,(AL) the daughter of Eliam(AM) and the wife of Uriah(AN) the Hittite.” 4 Then David sent messengers to get her.(AO) She came to him, and he slept(AP) with her. (Now she was purifying herself from her monthly uncleanness.)(AQ) Then she went back home. 5 The woman conceived and sent word to David, saying, “I am pregnant.”
6 So David sent this word to Joab: “Send me Uriah(AR) the Hittite.” And Joab sent him to David. 7 When Uriah came to him, David asked him how Joab was, how the soldiers were and how the war was going. 8 Then David said to Uriah, “Go down to your house and wash your feet.”(AS) So Uriah left the palace, and a gift from the king was sent after him. 9 But Uriah slept at the entrance to the palace with all his master’s servants and did not go down to his house.
10 David was told, “Uriah did not go home.” So he asked Uriah, “Haven’t you just come from a military campaign? Why didn’t you go home?”
11 Uriah said to David, “The ark(AT) and Israel and Judah are staying in tents,[c] and my commander Joab and my lord’s men are camped in the open country. How could I go to my house to eat and drink and make love(AU) to my wife? As surely as you live, I will not do such a thing!”
12 Then David said to him, “Stay here one more day, and tomorrow I will send you back.” So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the next. 13 At David’s invitation, he ate and drank with him, and David made him drunk. But in the evening Uriah went out to sleep on his mat among his master’s servants; he did not go home.
14 In the morning David wrote a letter(AV) to Joab and sent it with Uriah. 15 In it he wrote, “Put Uriah out in front where the fighting is fiercest. Then withdraw from him so he will be struck down(AW) and die.(AX)”
16 So while Joab had the city under siege, he put Uriah at a place where he knew the strongest defenders were. 17 When the men of the city came out and fought against Joab, some of the men in David’s army fell; moreover, Uriah the Hittite died.
18 Joab sent David a full account of the battle. 19 He instructed the messenger: “When you have finished giving the king this account of the battle, 20 the king’s anger may flare up, and he may ask you, ‘Why did you get so close to the city to fight? Didn’t you know they would shoot arrows from the wall? 21 Who killed Abimelek(AY) son of Jerub-Besheth[d]? Didn’t a woman drop an upper millstone on him from the wall,(AZ) so that he died in Thebez? Why did you get so close to the wall?’ If he asks you this, then say to him, ‘Moreover, your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead.’”
22 The messenger set out, and when he arrived he told David everything Joab had sent him to say. 23 The messenger said to David, “The men overpowered us and came out against us in the open, but we drove them back to the entrance of the city gate. 24 Then the archers shot arrows at your servants from the wall, and some of the king’s men died. Moreover, your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead.”
25 David told the messenger, “Say this to Joab: ‘Don’t let this upset you; the sword devours one as well as another. Press the attack against the city and destroy it.’ Say this to encourage Joab.”
26 When Uriah’s wife heard that her husband was dead, she mourned for him. 27 After the time of mourning(BA) was over, David had her brought to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing David had done displeased(BB) the Lord.

15 »Ja sam prava loza, a moj je Otac vinogradar. 2 On uklanja svaki izdanak na meni koji ne donosi plod, a svaki koji donosi plod obrezuje i čisti da donese još više plodova. 3 Vi ste već čisti zbog učenja koje ste od mene čuli. 4 Ostanite u meni i ja ću ostati u vama. Kao što izdanak može donijeti plod samo ako ostane na lozi, tako i vi možete donijeti plod samo ako ostanete u meni.
5 Ja sam loza, vi ste izdanci. Tko ostane u meni, kao što ja ostajem u Njemu, donosi mnogo plodova. Jer, bez mene ne možete ništa učiniti. 6 Onaj tko ne ostane u meni, on je poput grane koja se osuši nakon što se odbaci. Takve se grane potom skupljaju, bacaju u vatru i spaljuju.
7 Ako ostanete u meni i moje riječi ostanu u vama, tražite što god želite i dobit ćete. 8 Donijet ćete mnogo plodova i pokazati se kao moji učenici. Tako će moj Otac primiti slavu. 9 Kao što je Otac volio mene, i ja sam volio vas. Ostanite u mojoj ljubavi. 10 Ako budete izvršavali moje zapovijedi, ostat ćete u mojoj ljubavi kao što sam i ja izvršio zapovijedi svoga Oca i ostajem u njegovoj ljubavi. 11 Ovo sam vam rekao da moja radost bude u vama i da vaša radost bude potpuna. 12 Moja zapovijed glasi: volite jedan drugoga kao što sam ja volio vas! 13 Ako tko položi svoj život za svoje prijatelje, to je najveća ljubav koju može pokazati. 14 Vi ste moji prijatelji ako činite ono što vam zapovijedam. 15 Više vas ne nazivam ‘slugama’ jer sluga ne zna što čini njegov gospodar. Zovem vas ‘prijateljima’ jer sam vam prenio sve što sam čuo od svog Oca. 16 Niste vi izabrali mene, nego sam ja izabrao vas i odredio vas da idete i donesete plod, i da taj plod ostane, tako da vam Otac dâ sve što ga zamolite u moje ime. 17 Ovo vam zapovijedam: volite jedan drugoga!«
Isus upozorava
18 »Ako vas svijet mrzi, znajte da je mene mrzio prije vas. 19 Da pripadate svijetu, svijet bi vas volio kao svoje. Ali vi ne pripadate svijetu jer sam vas ja izabrao iz njega. To je razlog zašto vas svijet mrzi. 20 Sjetite se što sam vam rekao: ‘Sluga nije veći od gospodara’. Ako su progonili mene, progonit će i vas. Ako su slijedili moje upute, slijedit će i vaše. 21 Sve će vam to činiti zbog mene jer ne poznaju onoga koji me je poslao. 22 Da nisam došao i govorio im, ne bi bili krivi za grijeh. No sada nemaju isprike za svoj grijeh. 23 Tko mene mrzi, mrzi i mog Oca. 24 Među njima sam učinio djela koja nikad nitko nije učinio. Da ih nisam učinio, ne bi bili krivi za grijeh. No vidjeli su djela koja sam učinio, a ipak mrze i mene i mog Oca. 25 No to se dogodilo da bi se ostvarilo ono što je zapisano u njihovom Zakonu: ‘Mrzili su me bez razloga.’[a]
26 Doći će vam Zastupnik[b] kojeg ću poslati od Oca. On je Duh istine koji dolazi od Oca i On će govoriti o meni. 27 Ali i vi ćete govoriti o meni jer ste otpočetka sa mnom.«

The Vine and the Branches
15 “I am(A) the true vine,(B) and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit,(C) while every branch that does bear fruit(D) he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.(E) 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you.(F) No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit;(G) apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.(H) 7 If you remain in me(I) and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.(J) 8 This is to my Father’s glory,(K) that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.(L)
9 “As the Father has loved me,(M) so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands,(N) you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.(O) 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.(P) 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.(Q) 14 You are my friends(R) if you do what I command.(S) 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.(T) 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you(U) so that you might go and bear fruit(V)—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.(W) 17 This is my command: Love each other.(X)

18 “If the world hates you,(Y) keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you(Z) out of the world.
