Paul’s Advice for Timothy

I constantly thank my God—whom I serve[a] with a clear conscience, as my ancestors did—when I remember you in my prayers night and day, recalling your tears and longing to see you so that I can be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first existed in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am convinced that this faith[b] also exists in you. For this reason, I am reminding you to fan into flames the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity but one of power, love, and self-discipline.[c]
