This is [a]a (A)plain indication of God’s righteous judgment so that you will be (B)considered worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you indeed are suffering. [b]For after all (C)it is only right [c]for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to give relief to you who are afflicted, along with us, [d](D)when the Lord Jesus will be revealed (E)from heaven (F)with [e]His mighty angels (G)in flaming fire, dealing out retribution to those who (H)do not know God, and to those who (I)do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. These people will pay the penalty of (J)eternal destruction, (K)away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, 10 when He comes to be (L)glorified among His [f]saints on that (M)day, and to be marveled at among all who have believed—because our (N)testimony to you was believed.

And God will use this persecution to show his justice and to make you worthy of his Kingdom, for which you are suffering. In his justice he will pay back those who persecute you.

And God will provide rest for you who are being persecuted and also for us when the Lord Jesus appears from heaven. He will come with his mighty angels, in flaming fire, bringing judgment on those who don’t know God and on those who refuse to obey the Good News of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with eternal destruction, forever separated from the Lord and from his glorious power. 10 When he comes on that day, he will receive glory from his holy people—praise from all who believe. And this includes you, for you believed what we told you about him.
