40 Now the king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went on with him; and all the people of Judah and also (A)half the people of Israel [a]accompanied the king. 41 And behold, all the men of Israel came to the king and said to the king, “(B)Why have our brothers, (C)the men of Judah, abducted you and brought the king and his household and all David’s men with him, over the Jordan?” 42 Then all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, “Because (D)the king is a close relative to [b]us. Why then are you angry about this matter? Have we eaten at all [c]at the king’s expense, or has anything been taken for us?” 43 But the men of Israel answered the men of Judah and said, “[d](E)We have ten parts in the king, therefore [e]we also have more claim on David than you. Why then did you treat [f]us with contempt? Was it not [g]our [h]advice first to bring back [i]our king?” Yet the words of the men of Judah were harsher than the words of the men of Israel.

41 Then all the people of Israel came to the king and said to him, “Why have our kindred the people of Judah stolen you away and brought the king and his household over the Jordan and all David’s men with him?”(A) 42 All the people of Judah answered the people of Israel, “Because the king is near of kin to us. Why then are you angry over this matter? Have we eaten at all at the king’s expense? Or has he given us any gift?”(B) 43 But the people of Israel answered the people of Judah, “We have ten shares in the king, and in David also we have more than you. Why then did you despise us? Were we not the first to speak of bringing back our king?” But the words of the people of Judah were fiercer than the words of the people of Israel.(C)
