Guds ark förs till Jerusalem

6 (A) Åter samlade David alla de utvalda i Israel, trettiotusen man. 2 (B) David bröt upp och drog i väg med allt sitt folk från Baale-Juda[a] för att därifrån föra upp Guds ark som var uppkallad efter Namnet, namnet Herren Sebaot, han som tronar på keruberna[b]. 3 (C) De satte Guds ark på en ny vagn och hämtade den från Abinadabs hus på höjden. Ussa och Ahjo, Abinadabs söner, körde den nya vagnen. 4 Så förde de Guds ark bort från Abinadabs hus på höjden, och Ahjo gick framför arken. 5 David och hela Israels hus dansade och gladde sig inför Herrens ansikte med alla slags instrument av cypressträ, med harpor, lyror, tamburiner, skallror och cymbaler.

6 Men när de kom till Nakons tröskplats räckte Ussa ut handen mot Guds ark och grep tag i den, eftersom oxarna snavade. 7 (D) Då upptändes Herrens vrede mot Ussa. Gud slog honom där för hans synd[c], och han dog där vid Guds ark. 8 David blev upprörd över att Herren hade brutit ner Ussa.[d] Han kallade platsen Peres-Ussa, och den heter så än i dag.

9 David greps av fruktan för Herren den dagen och sade: ”Hur skulle Herrens ark kunna komma till mig?” 10 (E) Därför ville David inte föra in Herrens ark till sig i Davids stad utan ställde den i gatiten[e] Obed-Edoms[f] hus. 11 Sedan blev Herrens ark kvar i gatiten Obed-Edoms hus i tre månader. Och Herren välsignade Obed-Edom och hela hans hus.

12 (F) Det berättades för kung David att Herren hade välsignat Obed-Edoms hus och allt han ägde på grund av Guds ark. Då gick David och förde ut Guds ark ur Obed-Edoms hus upp till Davids stad under jubel. 13 (G) När de som bar Herrens ark hade gått sex steg framåt offrade han en tjur och en gödkalv. 14 (H) Själv dansade David med all kraft inför Herrens ansikte, och David var iklädd en linne-efod[g]. 15 Så hämtade David och hela Israel Herrens ark under jubel och basuners ljud.

16 (I) När Herrens ark kom in i Davids stad såg Mikal, Sauls dotter, ut genom fönstret, och när hon såg kung David hoppa och dansa inför Herrens ansikte föraktade hon honom i sitt hjärta.

17 (J) När de hade fört in Herrens ark och ställt den på sin plats mitt i det tält som David hade slagit upp åt den, offrade David brännoffer och gemenskapsoffer inför Herrens ansikte. 18 (K) Och när David hade offrat brännoffret och gemenskapsoffret, välsignade han folket i Herren Sebaots namn. 19 Till allt folket, hela skaran av israeliter, både man och kvinna, gav han en brödkaka,[h] en dadelkaka och en druvkaka.[i] Sedan gick allt folket hem, var och en till sitt.

20 När David återvände hem för att välsigna sitt husfolk gick Mikal, Sauls dotter, ut mot honom och sade. ”Hur härlig har inte Israels kung visat sig i dag, när han blottat sig inför ögonen på sina tjänares tjänstekvinnor så som lössläppt folk gör!” 21 Då sade David till Mikal: ”Det var inför Herren, han som har utvalt mig framför din far och hela hans hus och som har insatt mig till furste över Herrens folk Israel. Inför Herren dansade jag och gladde mig. 22 Jag ska bli ännu ringare än detta och förnedrad i egna ögon[j]. Men med tjänstekvinnorna som du talade om, tillsammans med dem ska jag bli ärad.” 23 Och Mikal, Sauls dotter, fick inga barn så länge hon levde.

6 Sedan samlade David 30 000 utvalda män från Israel 2 och ledde allt sitt folk till Baala[a] i Juda för att föra tillbaka Guds ark som fått sitt namn efter härskarornas Herre, han som tronar mellan keruberna. 3 De placerade Guds ark på en nygjord vagn och förde bort den från Avinadavs hus uppe på höjden. Avinadavs söner Ussa och Achjo körde vagnen 4 och medan den fördes bort därifrån, gick Achjo framför den. 5 David och hela Israel gladde sig av hela sin kraft[b] inför Herren och spelade på alla sorters musikinstrument: lyror, harpor, tamburiner, bjällror och cymbaler.

6 Men när de kom till Nakons tröskplats, snavade oxarna och Ussa räckte ut handen och grep tag i arken. 7 Då blev Herren vred på Ussa och Gud slog ner honom för hans försyndelse och han dog där vid arken.[c] 8 Men David blev upprörd över att Herren så brutit ner Ussa och kallade platsen Peres Ussa[d], och det heter den fortfarande.

9 David greps nu av fruktan för Herren och frågade: ”Hur ska jag kunna föra Herrens ark till mig?” 10 Han ville inte ta Herrens ark till Davids stad utan ställde in den hos gatiten Oved-Edom. 11 Herrens ark blev kvar i gatiten Oved-Edoms hus i tre månader, och Herren välsignade Oved-Edom och hela hans familj.

12 Kung David fick höra hur Herren hade välsignat Oved-Edoms familj och allt han hade på grund av Guds ark. Han begav sig då till Oved-Edoms hus för att föra upp Guds ark till Davids stad under jubel. 13 För var gång de män som bar Herrens ark hade gått sex steg, offrade David en tjur och en gödkalv. 14 David som var klädd i linne-efod dansade inför Herren av hela sin kraft, 15 medan han och hela Israels folk under jubelrop och hornmusik förde hem Herrens ark.

16 När Herrens ark kom in i Davids stad, såg Mikal, Sauls dotter, ut genom fönstret hur kung David hoppade och dansade inför Herren och hon föraktade honom.

17 Herrens ark fördes in i tältet som David hade rest och ställdes på sin plats. Sedan offrade David brännoffer och gemenskapsoffer till Herren. 18 När David avslutat brännoffren, välsignade han folket i härskarornas Herres namn 19 och han gav alla, både män och kvinnor, ett bröd, en dadelkaka och en druvkaka. Sedan gick alla hem, var och en till sitt. 20 David återvände sedan för att välsigna sin familj. Men Mikal, Sauls dotter, kom ut och mötte honom och sa föraktfullt: ”Så värdigt Israels kung betedde sig i dag! Han blottade sig[e] för sina tjänares tjänsteflickor som vilket simpelt slödder som helst!”

21 David svarade: ”Jag dansade inför Herren som har utvalt mig i stället för din far och hans släkt och gjort mig till furste över hans folk Israel. Jag ville visa min glädje i Herren. 22 Jag kan förödmjuka mig själv ännu mer. Jag kommer ändå att bli respekterad av de tjänsteflickor du talade om!”

23 Mikal, Sauls dotter, blev barnlös till sin död.[f]

Chapter 6

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem. 1 (A)David again assembled all the picked men of Israel, thirty thousand in number. 2 Then David and all the people who were with him set out for Baala of Judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which bears the name “the Lord of hosts enthroned above the cherubim.”(B) 3 They transported the ark of God on a new cart and took it away from the house of Abinadab on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, sons of Abinadab, were guiding the cart,(C) 4 with Ahio walking before it, 5 while David and all the house of Israel danced before the Lord with all their might, with singing, and with lyres, harps, tambourines, sistrums, and cymbals.(D) 6 As they reached the threshing floor of Nodan, Uzzah stretched out his hand to the ark of God and steadied it, for the oxen were tipping it. 7 Then the Lord became angry with Uzzah; God struck him on that spot, and he died there in God’s presence. 8 David was angry because the Lord’s wrath had broken out against Uzzah. Therefore that place has been called Perez-uzzah[a] even to this day. 9 David became frightened of the Lord that day, and he said, “How can the ark of the Lord come to me?” 10 So David was unwilling to take the ark of the Lord with him into the City of David. David deposited it instead at the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.

11 The ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite for three months, and the Lord blessed Obed-edom and all his household.(E) 12 (F)When it was reported to King David that the Lord had blessed the household of Obed-edom and all that he possessed because of the ark of God, David went to bring up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom into the City of David with joy.(G) 13 As soon as the bearers of the ark of the Lord had advanced six steps, he sacrificed an ox and a fatling. 14 Then David came dancing before the Lord with abandon, girt with a linen ephod.[b](H) 15 David and all the house of Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts of joy and sound of horn. 16 As the ark of the Lord was entering the City of David, Michal, daughter of Saul, looked down from her window, and when she saw King David jumping and dancing before the Lord, she despised him in her heart. 17 (I)They brought in the ark of the Lord and set it in its place within the tent which David had pitched for it. Then David sacrificed burnt offerings and communion offerings before the Lord. 18 When David had finished sacrificing burnt offerings and communion offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts, 19 and distributed among all the people, the entire multitude of Israel, to every man and every woman, one loaf of bread, one piece of meat, and one raisin cake. Then all the people returned to their homes.

20 [c]When David went home to bless his own house,(J) Michal, the daughter of Saul, came out to meet him and said, “How well the king of Israel has honored himself today, exposing himself to the view of the slave girls of his followers, as a commoner might expose himself!” 21 But David replied to Michal: “I was dancing before the Lord. As the Lord lives, who chose me over your father and all his house when he appointed me ruler over the Lord’s people, Israel, not only will I make merry before the Lord,(K) 22 but I will demean myself even more. I will be lowly in your eyes, but in the eyes of the slave girls you spoke of I will be somebody.” 23 Saul’s daughter Michal was childless to the day she died.

The cultic procession that accompanies the ark to the holy mountain, Zion, is led by King David, dancing ecstatically and wearing a priestly vestment.
  3. 6:20–23 Michal’s reaction to David’s dancing comes from her conception of how a king should comport himself. David rejects this understanding, saying he needs no instruction from the house of the failed king, Saul.

6 David again brought together all the able young men of Israel—thirty thousand. 2 He and all his men went to Baalah[a](C) in Judah to bring up from there the ark(D) of God, which is called by the Name,[b](E) the name of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned(F) between the cherubim(G) on the ark. 3 They set the ark of God on a new cart(H) and brought it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill.(I) Uzzah and Ahio, sons of Abinadab, were guiding the new cart 4 with the ark of God on it,[c] and Ahio was walking in front of it. 5 David and all Israel were celebrating(J) with all their might before the Lord, with castanets,[d] harps, lyres, timbrels, sistrums and cymbals.(K)

6 When they came to the threshing floor of Nakon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of(L) the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled. 7 The Lord’s anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act;(M) therefore God struck him down,(N) and he died there beside the ark of God.

8 Then David was angry because the Lord’s wrath(O) had broken out against Uzzah, and to this day that place is called Perez Uzzah.[e](P)

9 David was afraid of the Lord that day and said, “How(Q) can the ark of the Lord ever come to me?” 10 He was not willing to take the ark of the Lord to be with him in the City of David. Instead, he took it to the house of Obed-Edom(R) the Gittite. 11 The ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite for three months, and the Lord blessed him and his entire household.(S)

12 Now King David(T) was told, “The Lord has blessed the household of Obed-Edom and everything he has, because of the ark of God.” So David went to bring up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with rejoicing. 13 When those who were carrying the ark of the Lord had taken six steps, he sacrificed(U) a bull and a fattened calf. 14 Wearing a linen ephod,(V) David was dancing(W) before the Lord with all his might, 15 while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts(X) and the sound of trumpets.(Y)

16 As the ark of the Lord was entering the City of David,(Z) Michal(AA) daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, she despised him in her heart.

17 They brought the ark of the Lord and set it in its place inside the tent that David had pitched for it,(AB) and David sacrificed burnt offerings(AC) and fellowship offerings before the Lord. 18 After he had finished sacrificing(AD) the burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, he blessed(AE) the people in the name of the Lord Almighty. 19 Then he gave a loaf of bread, a cake of dates and a cake of raisins(AF) to each person in the whole crowd of Israelites, both men and women.(AG) And all the people went to their homes.

20 When David returned home to bless his household, Michal daughter of Saul came out to meet him and said, “How the king of Israel has distinguished himself today, going around half-naked(AH) in full view of the slave girls of his servants as any vulgar fellow would!”

21 David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed(AI) me ruler(AJ) over the Lord’s people Israel—I will celebrate before the Lord. 22 I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor.”

23 And Michal daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death.
