Un cantique de David
22 David adressa à l’Eternel les paroles de ce cantique lorsque l’Eternel l’eut délivré de tous ses ennemis, et en particulier de Saül. 2 Il dit ceci :
L’Eternel est ma forteresse, ╵mon rocher, mon libérateur.
3 Dieu est mon roc solide ╵où je me réfugie.
Il est mon Sauveur tout-puissant, ╵mon rempart et mon bouclier.
Mon asile est en lui.
Toi, mon Sauveur, tu me délivres ╵des hommes violents.
4 Loué soit l’Eternel : ╵quand je l’ai appelé,
j’ai été délivré ╵de tous mes ennemis.
5 La mort m’enserrait de ses flots,
et, comme un torrent destructeur, ╵me terrifiait.
6 Oui, le séjour des morts ╵m’entourait de ses liens,
le piège de la mort ╵se refermait sur moi.
7 Alors, dans ma détresse, ╵je priai l’Eternel.
Vers mon Dieu, je lançai ╵mon appel au secours,
mon cri parvint à ses oreilles
et, de son temple, il m’entendit.
8 La terre s’ébranla ╵et elle chancela,
les fondements du ciel ╵se mirent à frémir,
tout secoués par sa colère.
9 De ses narines s’élevait ╵de la fumée,
et de sa bouche ╵surgissait un feu dévorant,
des charbons embrasés ╵en jaillissaient.
10 Il inclina le ciel ╵et descendit,
un sombre nuage à ses pieds.
11 Il chevauchait un chérubin ╵et il volait,
et il apparaissait ╵sur les ailes du vent.
12 Il s’enveloppait de ténèbres,
des nuages opaques, ╵un amas d’eau ╵formaient sa tente.
13 De l’éclat brillant devant lui
jaillissaient des charbons ardents.
14 L’Eternel tonna dans le ciel,
le Dieu très-haut ╵fit retentir sa voix.
15 Et soudain il tira des flèches[a] ╵pour disperser mes ennemis,
il lança des éclairs ╵pour les mettre en déroute.
16 A la menace de l’Eternel,
et au souffle tempétueux ╵de sa colère,
le fond des eaux parut,
les fondements du monde ╵se trouvèrent à nu.
17 Du haut du ciel, ╵il étend sa main pour me prendre,
me retirer des grandes eaux.
18 Il me délivre ╵d’un ennemi puissant,
de gens qui me haïssent ╵et sont plus forts que moi.
19 Ils m’affrontaient ╵au jour de mon désastre,
mais l’Eternel ╵a été mon appui.
20 Il m’a retiré du danger, ╵l’a éloigné de moi,
il m’en a délivré ╵à cause de son affection pour moi.
21 L’Eternel a agi ╵en tenant compte ╵de ma conduite juste,
comme mes mains sont pures, ╵il m’a récompensé ;
22 car j’ai suivi ╵les voies qu’il a prescrites,
je n’abandonne pas mon Dieu ╵pour m’adonner au mal.
23 J’ai toujours ses lois sous mes yeux,
je ne fais fi ╵d’aucun de ses commandements.
24 Envers lui, je suis sans reproche,
je me suis gardé du péché.
25 L’Eternel m’a récompensé ╵d’avoir agi avec droiture
et de m’être gardé pur sous ses yeux.
26 Avec ceux qui sont bienveillants, ╵toi, tu te montres bienveillant.
Avec qui est irréprochable, ╵tu es irréprochable.
27 Et avec celui qui est pur, ╵tu es toi-même pur,
et avec celui qui agit ╵de manière tordue, ╵tu empruntes des chemins détournés.
28 Un peuple affligé, tu le sauves,
tu regardes les orgueilleux ╵et puis tu les abaisses.
29 Tu es ma lampe, ô Eternel.
Tu illumines mes ténèbres.
30 Avec toi, je me précipite ╵sur une troupe bien armée[b],
avec mon Dieu, ╵je franchis des murailles.
31 Parfaites sont les voies ╵que Dieu prescrit,
la parole de l’Eternel ╵est éprouvée.
Ceux qui le prennent pour refuge ╵trouvent en lui un bouclier.
32 Qui est Dieu, sinon l’Eternel ?
Qui est un roc ? C’est notre Dieu !
33 C’est Dieu ma place forte[c],
il me trace un chemin parfait.
34 Grâce à lui, je cours comme une gazelle,
il me fait prendre position ╵sur les hauteurs.
35 C’est lui qui m’entraîne au combat,
et me fait tendre l’arc de bronze.
36 Ta délivrance ╵me sert de bouclier,
en m’exauçant, tu me grandis.
37 Tu m’amènes à marcher ╵sur un chemin bien large,
mes jambes ne fléchissent pas.
38 Je poursuis tous mes ennemis, ╵je les détruis
et je ne reviens pas ╵sans les avoir exterminés.
39 Je les achève, je les frappe :
aucun ne se relève,
ils tombent sous mes pieds.
40 Tu me rends fort pour le combat,
tu fais plier mes agresseurs : ╵les voilà à mes pieds.
41 Tu mets mes ennemis en fuite,
et ceux qui me haïssent, ╵je les anéantis.
42 Ils ont beau crier au secours, ╵personne ne vient à leur aide,
et s’ils appellent l’Eternel, ╵celui-ci ne leur répond pas.
43 Je les broie comme la poussière de la terre,
je les piétine, je les foule ╵comme la boue des rues.
44 En face d’un peuple en révolte, ╵tu me fais triompher.
Tu me maintiens chef d’autres peuples.
Un peuple qu’autrefois ╵je ne connaissais pas ╵m’est maintenant soumis.
45 Oui, des étrangers me courtisent,
au premier mot, ils m’obéissent.
46 Les étrangers perdent courage,
tremblants[d], ils quittent leurs bastions.
47 Dieu est vivant ! Qu’il soit béni, ╵lui qui est mon rocher !
Que l’on proclame la grandeur ╵de Dieu, le rocher qui me sauve.
48 Ce Dieu m’accorde ma revanche,
il abaisse sous moi des peuples.
49 Lui, il me fait échapper à mes ennemis.
Oui, tu me fais triompher d’eux,
tu me délivres ╵des hommes violents.
50 Aussi je publie tes louanges, ╵ô Eternel, parmi les peuples,
je te célèbre par mes chants[e].
51 Pour son roi, l’Eternel opère ╵de grandes délivrances.
Il traite avec bonté ╵l’homme qui de sa part ╵a reçu l’onction d’huile sainte,
David et sa postérité, ╵pour toute éternité.

Cantique de délivrance de David
22 David adressa les paroles de ce chant à l'Eternel après qu’il l'eut délivré de tous ses ennemis et de Saül. 2 Il dit:
«L'Eternel est mon rocher, ma forteresse, mon libérateur.
3 Dieu est mon rocher où je trouve un abri,
mon bouclier et la force qui me sauve,
mon rempart et mon refuge.
Mon Sauveur, tu me garantis de la violence.
4 Loué soit l'Eternel! Je crie à lui
et je suis délivré de mes ennemis.
5 »Oui, les flots de la mort m'avaient enserré,
et les torrents dévastateurs m'avaient épouvanté.
6 Les liens du séjour des morts m'avaient entouré,
les pièges de la mort m'avaient surpris.
7 »Dans ma détresse, j'ai fait appel à l'Eternel,
j'ai appelé mon Dieu;
de son palais, il a entendu ma voix,
mon cri est parvenu à ses oreilles.
8 La terre a été ébranlée, elle a tremblé,
les fondements du ciel ont vacillé,
ils ont été ébranlés, parce qu'il était irrité.
9 Une fumée s’élevait de ses narines
et un feu dévorant sortait de sa bouche,
avec des charbons embrasés.
10 »Il a incliné le ciel et il est descendu,
une épaisse nuée sous ses pieds.
11 Il était monté sur un chérubin et il volait,
il apparaissait monté sur les ailes du vent.
12 Il faisait des ténèbres une tente autour de lui,
c’était un amas d'eau, de sombres nuages.
13 Une lumière éclatante le précédait,
d’où provenaient tout brûlants des charbons de feu.
14 »L'Eternel a tonné du haut du ciel,
le Très-Haut a fait retentir sa voix.
15 Il a lancé des flèches et dispersé mes ennemis,
il a lancé des éclairs et les a mis en déroute.
16 »Le fond de la mer est apparu,
les fondements du monde ont été découverts
à la menace de l'Eternel,
au souffle de ses narines.
17 Il est intervenu d'en haut, il m’a pris,
il m’a retiré des grandes eaux.
18 Il m’a délivré de mon adversaire puissant,
de mes ennemis qui étaient plus forts que moi.
19 »Ils m'avaient surpris lorsque j’étais dans la détresse,
mais l'Eternel a été mon appui.
20 Il m'a mis au large,
il m'a sauvé, parce qu'il m'aime.
21 »L'Eternel m'a récompensé de ma justice,
il m'a traité conformément à la pureté de mes mains,
22 car j'ai suivi les voies de l'Eternel
et je n'ai pas été coupable envers mon Dieu.
23 Toutes ses règles ont été devant moi
et je ne me suis pas écarté de ses prescriptions.
24 J'ai été intègre envers lui
et je me suis tenu en garde contre mon péché.
25 Alors l'Eternel m'a traité conformément à ma justice,
à la pureté qu’il a vue chez moi.
26 »Avec celui qui est fidèle tu te montres fidèle,
avec l'homme intègre tu agis avec intégrité,
27 avec celui qui est pur tu te montres pur,
et avec l’homme faux tu te montres habile.
28 Tu sauves le peuple qui s'humilie,
et tu abaisses ton regard sur les orgueilleux.
29 Oui, tu es ma lumière, Eternel!
L'Eternel éclaire mes ténèbres.
30 »Avec toi je me précipite sur une troupe tout armée,
avec mon Dieu je franchis une muraille.
31 Les voies de Dieu sont droites,
la parole de l'Eternel est pure;
il est un bouclier pour tous ceux qui se confient en lui.
32 »Qui est Dieu en dehors de l'Eternel,
et qui est un rocher, sinon notre Dieu?
33 C'est Dieu qui est ma puissante forteresse
et qui me conduit dans une voie droite.
34 Il rend mes pieds aussi agiles que ceux des biches,
et il me fait tenir debout sur les hauteurs.
35 Il exerce mes mains au combat
et mes bras tendent l'arc en bronze.
36 »Tu me donnes le bouclier de ton salut,
et je deviens grand par ta bonté.
37 Tu élargis le chemin sous mes pas,
et mes pieds ne trébuchent pas.
38 Je poursuis mes ennemis et je les détruis,
je ne reviens pas avant de les avoir exterminés.
39 Je les frappe, je les brise, et ils ne se relèvent plus,
ils tombent sous mes pieds.
40 Tu me donnes de la force pour le combat,
tu fais plier sous moi mes adversaires.
41 Tu mets mes ennemis en fuite devant moi,
et je réduis au silence ceux qui me détestent.
42 Ils regardent autour d'eux, et personne pour les sauver!
Ils crient à l'Eternel, et il ne leur répond pas!
43 Je les réduis en miettes, je les rends pareils à la poussière de la terre,
je les écrase, je les piétine comme la boue des rues.
44 »Tu me délivres des révoltes de mon peuple;
tu me gardes à la tête des nations;
un peuple que je ne connaissais pas m'est soumis.
45 Les étrangers me flattent,
ils m'obéissent au premier ordre.
46 Les étrangers perdent courage,
ils sortent en tremblant de leurs forteresses.
47 »L'Eternel est vivant! Béni soit mon rocher!
Que l’on dise la grandeur de Dieu, le rocher de mon salut!
48 C’est le Dieu qui m’accorde la vengeance,
qui m’asservit les peuples,
49 qui me fait échapper à mes ennemis!
»Tu m'élèves au-dessus de mes adversaires,
tu me sauves de l'homme violent.
50 *C'est pourquoi je te louerai parmi les nations, Eternel,
et je chanterai à la gloire de ton nom.[a]
51 »Il accorde de grandes délivrances à son roi,
il agit avec bonté envers celui qu’il a désigné par onction,
envers David et sa descendance, pour toujours.»

22 David sang(B) to the Lord the words of this song when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. 2 He said:
“The Lord is my rock,(C) my fortress(D) and my deliverer;(E)
3 my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,(F)
my shield[a](G) and the horn[b](H) of my salvation.
He is my stronghold,(I) my refuge and my savior—
from violent people you save me.
4 “I called to the Lord, who is worthy(J) of praise,
and have been saved from my enemies.
5 The waves(K) of death swirled about me;
the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.
6 The cords of the grave(L) coiled around me;
the snares of death confronted me.
7 “In my distress(M) I called(N) to the Lord;
I called out to my God.
From his temple he heard my voice;
my cry came to his ears.
8 The earth(O) trembled and quaked,(P)
the foundations(Q) of the heavens[c] shook;
they trembled because he was angry.
9 Smoke rose from his nostrils;
consuming fire(R) came from his mouth,
burning coals(S) blazed out of it.
10 He parted the heavens and came down;
dark clouds(T) were under his feet.
11 He mounted the cherubim(U) and flew;

12 He made darkness(W) his canopy around him—

13 Out of the brightness of his presence
bolts of lightning(X) blazed forth.
14 The Lord thundered(Y) from heaven;
the voice of the Most High resounded.
15 He shot his arrows(Z) and scattered the enemy,
with great bolts of lightning he routed them.
16 The valleys of the sea were exposed
and the foundations of the earth laid bare
at the rebuke(AA) of the Lord,
at the blast(AB) of breath from his nostrils.
17 “He reached down from on high(AC) and took hold of me;
he drew(AD) me out of deep waters.
18 He rescued(AE) me from my powerful enemy,
from my foes, who were too strong for me.
19 They confronted me in the day of my disaster,
but the Lord was my support.(AF)
20 He brought me out into a spacious(AG) place;

21 “The Lord has dealt with me according to my righteousness;(AK)
according to the cleanness(AL) of my hands(AM) he has rewarded me.

I am not guilty of turning from my God.

I have not turned(AP) away from his decrees.

26 “To the faithful you show yourself faithful,
to the blameless you show yourself blameless,

28 You save the humble,(AU)
but your eyes are on the haughty(AV) to bring them low.(AW)
29 You, Lord, are my lamp;(AX)
the Lord turns my darkness into light.
30 With your help I can advance against a troop[g];
with my God I can scale a wall.
31 “As for God, his way is perfect:(AY)
The Lord’s word is flawless;(AZ)
he shields(BA) all who take refuge in him.
32 For who is God besides the Lord?
And who is the Rock(BB) except our God?(BC)
33 It is God who arms me with strength[h]
and keeps my way secure.
34 He makes my feet like the feet of a deer;(BD)
he causes me to stand on the heights.(BE)
35 He trains my hands(BF) for battle;
my arms can bend a bow(BG) of bronze.
36 You make your saving help my shield;(BH)

44 “You have delivered(BS) me from the attacks of the peoples;
you have preserved(BT) me as the head of nations.
People(BU) I did not know now serve me,
45 foreigners cower(BV) before me;
as soon as they hear of me, they obey me.(BW)
46 They all lose heart;
they come trembling[j](BX) from their strongholds.
47 “The Lord lives! Praise be to my Rock!
Exalted(BY) be my God, the Rock, my Savior!(BZ)
48 He is the God who avenges(CA) me,(CB)
who puts the nations under me,
49 who sets me free from my enemies.(CC)
You exalted me(CD) above my foes;
from a violent man you rescued me.
50 Therefore I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;

22 And David spake unto the Lord the words of this song in the day that the Lord had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul:
2 And he said, The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;
3 The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.
4 I will call on the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.
5 When the waves of death compassed me, the floods of ungodly men made me afraid;
6 The sorrows of hell compassed me about; the snares of death prevented me;
7 In my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried to my God: and he did hear my voice out of his temple, and my cry did enter into his ears.
8 Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations of heaven moved and shook, because he was wroth.
9 There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it.
10 He bowed the heavens also, and came down; and darkness was under his feet.
11 And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: and he was seen upon the wings of the wind.
12 And he made darkness pavilions round about him, dark waters, and thick clouds of the skies.
13 Through the brightness before him were coals of fire kindled.
14 The Lord thundered from heaven, and the most High uttered his voice.
15 And he sent out arrows, and scattered them; lightning, and discomfited them.
16 And the channels of the sea appeared, the foundations of the world were discovered, at the rebuking of the Lord, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils.
17 He sent from above, he took me; he drew me out of many waters;
18 He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them that hated me: for they were too strong for me.
19 They prevented me in the day of my calamity: but the Lord was my stay.
20 He brought me forth also into a large place: he delivered me, because he delighted in me.
21 The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness: according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.
22 For I have kept the ways of the Lord, and have not wickedly departed from my God.
23 For all his judgments were before me: and as for his statutes, I did not depart from them.
24 I was also upright before him, and have kept myself from mine iniquity.
25 Therefore the Lord hath recompensed me according to my righteousness; according to my cleanness in his eye sight.
26 With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful, and with the upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright.
27 With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself unsavoury.
28 And the afflicted people thou wilt save: but thine eyes are upon the haughty, that thou mayest bring them down.
29 For thou art my lamp, O Lord: and the Lord will lighten my darkness.
30 For by thee I have run through a troop: by my God have I leaped over a wall.
31 As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the Lord is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him.
32 For who is God, save the Lord? and who is a rock, save our God?
33 God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect.
34 He maketh my feet like hinds' feet: and setteth me upon my high places.
35 He teacheth my hands to war; so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms.
36 Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy gentleness hath made me great.
37 Thou hast enlarged my steps under me; so that my feet did not slip.
38 I have pursued mine enemies, and destroyed them; and turned not again until I had consumed them.
39 And I have consumed them, and wounded them, that they could not arise: yea, they are fallen under my feet.
40 For thou hast girded me with strength to battle: them that rose up against me hast thou subdued under me.
41 Thou hast also given me the necks of mine enemies, that I might destroy them that hate me.
42 They looked, but there was none to save; even unto the Lord, but he answered them not.
43 Then did I beat them as small as the dust of the earth, I did stamp them as the mire of the street, and did spread them abroad.
44 Thou also hast delivered me from the strivings of my people, thou hast kept me to be head of the heathen: a people which I knew not shall serve me.
45 Strangers shall submit themselves unto me: as soon as they hear, they shall be obedient unto me.
46 Strangers shall fade away, and they shall be afraid out of their close places.
47 The Lord liveth; and blessed be my rock; and exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation.
48 It is God that avengeth me, and that bringeth down the people under me.
49 And that bringeth me forth from mine enemies: thou also hast lifted me up on high above them that rose up against me: thou hast delivered me from the violent man.
50 Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O Lord, among the heathen, and I will sing praises unto thy name.
51 He is the tower of salvation for his king: and sheweth mercy to his anointed, unto David, and to his seed for evermore.
