Confirming One’s Calling and Election

His divine power(A) has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him(B) who called us(C) by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises,(D) so that through them you may participate in the divine nature,(E) having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.(F)

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;(G) and to knowledge, self-control;(H) and to self-control, perseverance;(I) and to perseverance, godliness;(J) and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.(K) For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive(L) in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.(M) But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind,(N) forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.(O)

10 Therefore, my brothers and sisters,[a] make every effort to confirm your calling(P) and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble,(Q) 11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom(R) of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.(S)

Prophecy of Scripture

12 So I will always remind you of these things,(T) even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth(U) you now have. 13 I think it is right to refresh your memory(V) as long as I live in the tent of this body,(W) 14 because I know that I will soon put it aside,(X) as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.(Y) 15 And I will make every effort to see that after my departure(Z) you will always be able to remember these things.

16 For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power,(AA) but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.(AB) 17 He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”[b](AC) 18 We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.(AD)

19 We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable,(AE) and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light(AF) shining in a dark place, until the day dawns(AG) and the morning star(AH) rises in your hearts.(AI)

Living as the Lord's Followers

We have everything we need to live a life that pleases God. It was all given to us by God's own power, when we learned he had invited us to share in his wonderful goodness. God made great and marvelous promises, so his nature would become part of us. Then we could escape our evil desires and the corrupt influences of this world.

Do your best to improve your faith by adding goodness, understanding, self-control, patience, devotion to God, concern for others, and love. If you keep growing in this way, it will show that what you know about our Lord Jesus Christ has made your lives useful and meaningful. But if you don't grow, you are like someone who is nearsighted or blind, and you have forgotten that your past sins are forgiven.

10 My friends, you must do all you can to show God has really chosen and selected you. If you keep on doing this, you won't stumble and fall. 11 Then our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will give you a glorious welcome into his kingdom that will last forever.

12 You are holding firmly to the truth you were given. But I am still going to remind you of these things. 13 In fact, I think I should keep on reminding you until I leave this body. 14 And our Lord Jesus Christ has already told me that I will soon leave it behind. 15 This is why I am doing my best to make sure that each of you remembers all of this after I am gone.

The Message about the Glory of Christ

16 When we told you about the power and the return of our Lord Jesus Christ, we were not telling clever stories someone had made up. But with our own eyes we saw his true greatness. 17 (A) God, our great and wonderful Father, truly honored him by saying, “This is my own dear Son, and I am pleased with him.” 18 We were there with Jesus on the holy mountain and heard this voice speak from heaven.

19 All of this makes us even more certain that what the prophets said is true. So you should pay close attention to their message, as you would to a lamp shining in some dark place. You must keep on paying attention until daylight comes and the morning star rises in your hearts.

According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;

And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;

And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.

For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:

11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

12 Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth.

13 Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance;

14 Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me.

15 Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance.

16 For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

17 For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

18 And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.

19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

seeing that his divine power hath granted unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that called us [a]by his own glory and virtue; whereby he hath granted unto us his precious and exceeding great promises; that through these ye may become partakers of [b]the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world by lust. Yea, and for this very cause adding on your part all diligence, in your faith supply virtue; and in your virtue knowledge; and in your knowledge self-control; and in your self-control [c]patience; and in your [d]patience godliness; and in your godliness [e]brotherly kindness; and in your [f]brotherly kindness love. For if these things are yours and abound, they make you to be not idle nor unfruitful unto the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he that lacketh these things is blind, [g]seeing only what is near, having forgotten the cleansing from his old sins. 10 Wherefore, brethren, give the more diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never stumble: 11 for thus shall be richly supplied unto you the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

12 Wherefore I shall be ready always to put you in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and are established in the truth which is with you. 13 And I think it right, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance; 14 knowing that the putting off of my tabernacle cometh swiftly, even as our Lord Jesus Christ signified unto me. 15 Yea, I will give diligence that at every time ye may be able after my [h]decease to call these things to remembrance. 16 For we did not follow cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and [i]coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For he [j]received from God the Father honor and glory, when there was borne such a voice to him by the Majestic Glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased: 18 and this voice we ourselves heard borne out of heaven, when we were with him in the holy mount. 19 And we have the word of prophecy made more sure; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a lamp shining in a [k]dark place, until the day dawn, and the day-star arise in your hearts:

for His (A)divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true (B)knowledge of Him who (C)called us [a]by His own glory and [b]excellence. Through [c]these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent (D)promises, so that by them you may become (E)partakers of the divine nature, having (F)escaped the (G)corruption that is in (H)the world on account of lust. Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith (I)supply (J)moral [d]excellence, and in your moral excellence, (K)knowledge, and in your knowledge, (L)self-control, and in your self-control, (M)perseverance, and in your perseverance, (N)godliness, and in your godliness, (O)brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they do not make you useless nor (P)unproductive in the true (Q)knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For the one who lacks these qualities is (R)blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his (S)purification from his former sins. 10 Therefore, brothers and sisters, be all the more diligent to make certain about His (T)calling and (U)choice of you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never (V)stumble; 11 for in this way the entrance into (W)the eternal kingdom of our (X)Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be (Y)abundantly (Z)supplied to you.

12 Therefore, (AA)I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them and have been established in (AB)the truth which is present with you. 13 I consider it (AC)right, as long as I am in (AD)this earthly [e]dwelling, to (AE)stir you up by way of reminder, 14 knowing that (AF)the laying aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent, (AG)as also our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. 15 And I will also be diligent that at any time after my (AH)departure you will be able to call these things to mind.

Eyewitnesses

16 For we did not follow cleverly devised (AI)tales when we made known to you the (AJ)power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were (AK)eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such a (AL)[f]declaration as this was made to Him by the (AM)Majestic Glory: “This is [g]My beloved Son with whom I am well pleased”— 18 and we ourselves heard this [h]declaration made from heaven when we were with Him on the (AN)holy mountain.

19 And so we have (AO)the prophetic word made more (AP)sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to (AQ)a lamp shining in a dark place, until the (AR)day dawns and the (AS)morning star arises (AT)in your hearts.
