Ahaziah’s Messengers Meet Elijah

Now (A)Moab revolted against Israel after the death of Ahab. And Ahaziah fell through the lattice in his upper chamber, which was in Samaria, and became ill. So he sent messengers and said to them, “Go, (B)inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, (C)whether I will live from this sickness.” But the angel of [a]Yahweh said to (D)Elijah the Tishbite, “Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and say to them, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of (E)Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron?’ Now therefore thus says Yahweh, ‘[b](F)You shall not come down from the bed where you have gone up, but you shall surely die.’” Then Elijah departed.

So the messengers returned to him, and he said to them, “[c]Why have you returned?” And they said to him, “A man came up to meet us and said to us, ‘Go, return to the king who sent you and say to him, “Thus says Yahweh, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending (G)to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore [d]you shall not come down from the bed where you have gone up, but shall surely die.’”’” And he said to them, “What [e]kind of man was he who came up to meet you and spoke these words to you?” And they said to him, “(H)He was a hairy man with a leather girdle girded about his loins.” And he said, “It is Elijah the Tishbite.”

Ahaziah’s Sickness and Death

After the death of Ahab, Moab(A) rebelled against Israel.(B) Ahaziah(C) had fallen through the latticed window of his upper room in Samaria(D) and was injured. So he sent messengers instructing them: “Go inquire of Baal-zebub,[a](E) the god of Ekron,(F) if I will recover from this injury.”(G)

But the angel of the Lord said to Elijah the Tishbite,(H) “Go and meet the messengers of the king of Samaria(I) and ask them, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron?’ Therefore, this is what the Lord says: ‘You will not get up from your sickbed—you will certainly die.’” Then Elijah left.

The messengers returned to the king, who asked them, “Why have you come back?”

They replied, “A man came to meet us and said, ‘Go back to the king who sent you and declare to him: This is what the Lord says: Is it because there is no God in Israel that you’re sending these men to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore, you will not get up from your sickbed—you will certainly die.’”

The king asked them, “What sort of man came up to meet you and spoke those words to you?”

They replied, “A hairy man with a leather belt around his waist.”(J)

He said, “It’s Elijah the Tishbite.”(K)
