It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth,(A) just as the Father commanded us. And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning.(B) I ask that we love one another. And this is love:(C) that we walk in obedience to his commands.(D) As you have heard from the beginning,(E) his command is that you walk in love.

Living in the Truth

I was overjoyed to find some of your[a] children living truthfully, just as the Father has commanded us. Dear lady, I am now requesting of you[b] that we all continue to love one another. It is not as though I am writing to give you[c] a new commandment, but one that we have had from the beginning. And this is what demonstrates[d] love: that we live according to God’s[e] commandments. Just as you[f] have heard from the beginning what he commanded, you[g] must live by it.
